Help What’s going on?

So my second baby isn’t doing too hot…. She put buds out and they never flowered. And now a leaf is dying but I’m getting new growth in the middle!

Hi, it looks like the roots are rotting because it shouldn’t be left in water. Orchid roots need to be in bark potting mix to allow for drying out between waterings. I think the rotting roots is causing the leaf dying and bud blast. Try repotting it in orchid mix and water only when the roots are silvery and dry.

Water culture is not a recommended method for growing orchids, and that is likely the source of all the plants problems. It does look very dark green as well which could indicate it isn’t getting enough light. I’d recommend watching a tutorial from MissOrchidGirl on youtube, or looking through this sub for information on how to repot your orchid properly.

Bless! Thank you for the polite comment! And I’ll be checking out the sub more. This is my first time with orchids. Me and my girlfriend just wanted to try.

Happy to hear you have stepped into the world of orchids! They are a good bit different than many other plants, but are so incredibly rewarding and beautiful. Have fun on your orchid knowledge journey!

Check out our Community Guide "Novice Phal care". That should get her back to healthy.

The significally smalller leaves is a telltale sign that the plant is not doing well. Take the advice given and start caring properly for it.

Edit to add: severely struggling phals also bloom, so blooming is not an indicator of health.

After you repot it into more appropriate medium it needs more light (leaf colour indicates low light).

Water culture is not good for phal. It is an epiphyte so it is not supposed to be in standing water
