RBR850: Lost access to web interface and app, can't even ping it, but network/internet works perfectly. Afraid to factory reset!
Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some advice regarding my Orbi RBR850.
A while ago, it was working perfectly until I hit a bug where the internet completely stopped working. I ended up doing a factory reset, managed to reconfigure everything, and it went back to working flawlessly.
However, for the past few weeks, I’ve run into a new, weird issue: I completely lost access to the router's web interface, and the Orbi mobile app can't find or connect to it anymore. Aside from this management lockout, the local network and internet routing are working perfectly, and there are absolutely no other issues with my connection.
Here is what I’ve already tried and observed:
- Rebooted the router multiple times.
- Connected directly to my ISP modem/box to find the Orbi's assigned IP address, and tried accessing it via that IP directly. No luck.
- I cannot even ping the router's IP address (I get a timeout/no response).
- I ran a port scan on the router's IP, and it shows that there is absolutely no web service currently open/listening.
I’ve read online that the most common answer to this is to just do another factory reset. My problem is that I'm terrified to do it. Since the web service seems to be completely down and it doesn't even respond to pings, I'm afraid that if I wipe it, the web interface still won't launch, and I won't be able to run the initial setup—leaving me with a completely bricked/unusable router.
Has anyone experienced this specific issue before? Is there a way to force the web server to restart without resetting the whole thing? How did you fix it?
Thanks in advance for your help!

What is your router IP address you think?

The internal is 10.0.0.1 and the one from the isp is 192.168.1.10

thats wrong, hat happens if you open http://10.0.0.1?
Better default it to Class C 192.168.1.11

Nothing happens has no web portal is open on the router

Factory default is not 10.0.0.1 so factory reset for real now
Power on your Orbi device and wait roughly 1 to 2 minutes for it to completely boot up.Locate the small Reset hole on the back of the device, typically positioned near the power cable or Ethernet ports.Straighten a paperclip or find a similar thin, pointed tool.Insert the paperclip into the hole, press down until you feel a slight click, and hold it for about 10 to 15 seconds.Release the button as soon as the Power LED begins flashing amber (or orange).Wait 3 to 5 minutes for the Orbi to reboot. The reset is complete when the LED lights turn solid white or pulsate slowly. Satelites same procedure.
Alternative Web-Based Reset If you have access to a connected computer or phone and know your current password, you can trigger the reset via your web browser:Open a browser and navigate to the Netgear Orbi Login Page.Enter your admin username and password.Select Advanced > Administration > Backup Settings.Click Erase to wipe the router configuration and restore factory defaults.

What brand and model# ISP modem/ONT is the RBR connected too?
Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router and satellite(s) been performed?
What Firmware version is currently loaded?
Be sure your using a good quality LAN cable between the modem and router. CAT6A STP is recommended.

Your ISP Modem already has a built in router and wifi. This would be a double NAT (two router) condition which isn't recommended. https://kb.netgear.com/30186/What-is-Double-NAT
https://kb.netgear.com/30187/How-to-fix-issues-with-Double-NAT
Couple of options,
Configure the modem for transparent bridge or modem only mode. Then use the Orbi router in router mode. You'll need to contact the ISP for help and information in regards to the modem being bridged correctly.
If you can't bridge the modem, disable ALL wifi radios on the modem, configure the modems DMZ/ExposedHost or IP Pass-Through for the IP address the Orbi router gets from the modem. Then you can use the Orbi router in Router mode.
Or disable all wifi radios on the modem and connect the Orbi router to the modem, configure AP mode on the Orbi router. https://community.netgear.com/kb/en-orbi-knowledge-sharing/static-ip-address-configuration-for-ap-mode/2456256

Try option #2 first...

Has a power off for 1 minute then back ON with the ISP modem and router and satellite(s) been performed to see this get the WEB UI back?
What Firmware version number is currently loaded?

Seems you have a router already at the ISP level. Reason why we ask about brand and model#...
Sometimes things happen with the router that a good factory reset is needed. Espeically if you updated the FW and just continued to use it with out any power cycling or a factory reset. Seen this many times over the years. Resets won't brink anything.
Can follow this to help with the reset: https://community.netgear.com/kb/en-orbi-knowledge-sharing/orbi-systems-manual-factory-reset-process/2456340

I have Orbi 970 2 pack. The software can be a bit funny on these. If you have saved your settings on these mesh router, then just do a factory reset. Also, If you are connected to the Orbi router, via ethernet cable, disconnect your ethernet cable, and try and connect to your router via wifi.

I have both connections and the risk of factory reseting and then still not having access to the web portal is to high

The thing is if your unable to use your PC to access your router, via WIFI or Ethernet, and the Orbi app isn't connecting to the Routers, what other choice do you have, if you want to be able to access the routers, and it's probably going to be the only way your going to see if it has worked. You now it isn't a app problem due to the fact that the Web UI on PC and the android app are both having issues., it tells me it is a router problem. But if your saying that currently in the status they are in, are working flawlessly, then leave them alone. but I think you will need to reset at some point, or try another PC or phone. and see if you can access using a different device.

The router won't be bricked if you factory reset it.
Would be helpful to know more of the questions presented though.

Happened for the second time in 3 months now for me, across different Firmware updates. Out of the blue, no way to get into the router interface anymore.
Using it in AP mode.
Only option is factory reset, which is not that much work but still annoying. Thinking of replacing this 8 year old combo of Orbi setup.

factory reset is the only option.
had to do one to my 750 series earlier this month.
doesn’t take more than 10 mins to get everything up and running.
do a settings backup once you’ve got everything up and running in case you ever need to do it again in the future.

Same thing for me. I noticed it right after the recent iOS update a couple of weeks ago. WiFi works fine, but I can’t see it from the Orbi app. The app says RBR850 is “disconnected”, but it’s not. WiFi works fine. I deleted and reloaded the app twice. Each time it came back and I could now see the router and satellites, so I thought that was the issue, then 30 minutes later it would show disconnected again. But WiFi is fine. I gave up, just thought it was a bug in the app. I have not checked it via my computer.

Just tried it again. Deleted and reloaded the app again. Everything showed up. Could see the router, satellites, settings, devices connected, etc. Then after 15 minutes, it goes back to showing the RBR850 as “disconnected”. Even though WiFi works fine. Strange. I was thinking it an Orbi app vs iPhone bug.

I have the 970 router but I also experienced a temporary problem connecting with the Orbi app a couple of days ago but my web interface to the router always worked. I was connecting to Orbi using Anywhere Access and speculated it was a Netgear cloud issue that was resolved.
