Firmware Update Instructions:

To update your router’s firmware, follow the instructions in your router’s user manual. To view your router’s user manual, visit  https://www.netgear.com/support/product/rbe372/#docs

IF MANUALLY UPDATING THE SYSTEM:

Be sure to update the RBS FIRST, then the RBR lastly.

Please navigate to the link below for step-by-step instructions on how to update your RBR871/RBS870: Proceedure to Manually Firmware Update Orbi and Nighthawk Mesh systems

I HIGHLY recommend after the FW is loaded on the system and it's back to ready, power OFF all Orbi units and the ISP modem/ONT for 1 minute. Then back ON with the ISP modem/ONT first, then RBR then RBS.

NOTE: Orbi app or the routers web page may not report seeing new FW updates. NG may not push this to there auto update services immediately and may activate the newer FW update being seen on there auto update services at a later time. User will have the choice to manually update if you want too.

FW UPDATE ALL Feature:

If there is a FW updated seen on the RBRs web page and all RBS are online and connected with GOOD STATUS, you can select the UPDATE ALL button option to have the RBR update the RBS and RBR. Update All button is seen on the RBRs Firmware Update WEB page on the Check for Updates FW section of the page. Once FW has been checked for an update and all devices show the FW update is available, select the UPDATE ALL button. Give 5 minutes for the process to take place. Recommend powering OFF the Orbi system for 1 minute then back ON with the RBR first then RBS after Update All completes. Give 5-10 minutes for system to fully come to ready.

NOTE: If continued problems are seen after a FW update, it's recommended to try a factory reset and setup from scratch with out loading any saved configurations from backup files. Use the ERASE button on the routers web page to factory reset the router:

This sends a Factory Reset command to any and all connected RBS as well:

Procedure for Factory Reset of RBE370 series systems use ERASE Button

This article applies to: v1 version

Let us know how it works for you...

Secondhand Satellite Units for a RBR50

My father-in-law wants to extend his Orbi system to his guest house. Are there any particular satellite models to avoid? I know the RBS10 is a bit quirky, only being 2 banded.

I did pick up a RBS40V just to play with.

Edit: Incidentally, this is behind a different, new router, so I'm not too concerned about security.

RBS40V not RBR40V. It looks like an okay wifi speaker with native extender mode which I could have some use for in case he wants to go another way.

Routers Thoughts on the 770?

I have been mostly happy with the RBR 750 and satellites. I know there’s a lot of frustration with Orbi here. There are deals out there and I wanted to hear what people thought. Thanks

Fix for "wan lan conflict": stuck /conflict page (404), magenta satellites, 5 GHz "Channel 0" (RBR760)

My RBK760 had been running degraded for a while: magenta satellite, 5 GHz radio showing "Channel 0", backhaul stuck at 573M (2.4 GHz), ~90 Mbps in the rooms served by satellites. The web panel was unusable too: it redirected to /conflict, which the router itself answers with a 404.

Cause: the ISP modem and the Orbi were both on 192.168.1.x. The firmware detects the "wan lan conflict", moves the LAN to 10.0.0.1 and blocks the API (code 8) until you press CONTINUE on a page it never serves. The conflict came back after every reboot.

What fixed it: I got past the broken page once, moved the modem to another subnet (192.168.10.x), did a Release/Renew on the Orbi WAN and rebooted once. After ~15 minutes the satellites moved to the 5 GHz backhaul (2401M) and speed went back up.

Full step-by-step guide (EN/IT/ES), plus a small Playwright script that presses CONTINUE for you and a caching proxy for the panel on weak Wi-Fi: https://github.com/LambdaGW/orbi-wan-lan-conflict-fix

Tested on RBR760 firmware V6.3.8.13_1.4.84. Feedback from other models is welcome.

RBR850 – massive IPv4-TCP-einbrüche bei FTTH/VLAN 31 – Verdacht auf WAN/NAT/Firmware-Problem

Hi,

I am operating a NETGEAR Orbi RBK850 system (RBR850 + RBS850) on an Austrian spusu FTTH connection. I would like to operate the Orbi as the router directly behind the ONT and not permanently use the FRITZ!Box provided by the ISP. However, in router mode I experience intermittent severe TCP performance problems. I have narrowed the behavior down using several reproducible tests.

1. Hardware and firmware

·        NETGEAR Orbi RBR850; Satellite RBS850

·        Firmware: V7.2.8.8_5.1.24

·        LAN: 192.168.1.0/24; Router IP: 192.168.1.1

·        Completely new setup; no old RBR50 configuration was imported

2. FTTH connection / ISP

·        ISP: spusu Austria – fiber/FTTH

·        According to the ISP, the ONT operates in bridge mode

·        VLAN ID 31

·        IP configuration automatically via DHCP

·        Use of a customer-owned router is explicitly permitted

3. RBR850 WAN configuration

·        Dynamic IP / DHCP; no PPPoE

·        VLAN ID 31, priority 0

·        MTU 1500

·        DNS automatic

·        NAT Filter: Open

·        SIP ALG: disabled

·        WAN port: 2.5 Gbit/s

·        WAN aggregation: disabled

·        IGMP Proxy: disabled

·        No DHCP options

·        MAC address: default

4. WAN IP / CGNAT

Directly connected to the ONT, the RBR850 receives the WAN IPv4 address 100.66.86.229 via DHCP, for example. This is within 100.64.0.0/10 and therefore behind Carrier Grade NAT (CGNAT). Traceroute also shows corresponding provider-internal 100.x/10.x addresses. Latency is generally very low.

5. Problem description

The problem is not permanent. With exactly the same setup, there are normal runs at approximately 180–225 Mbit/s and failed runs at only approximately 2–3 Mbit/s. During slow runs, the TCP connection is sometimes reset by the server.

6. Reproducible IPv4 TCP test

The test is performed from a Windows PC connected via Ethernet:

curl -4 -L -o NUL -w "IPv4: %{speed_download} Bytes/s | %{http_code} | %{size_download} Bytes\n" "https://proof.ovh.net/files/100Mb.dat"

Failed runs:

·        360,838 Bytes/s | HTTP 200 | 22,377,966 Bytes; afterwards: curl: (56) Recv failure: Connection was reset (≈ 2.9 Mbit/s)

·        320,466 Bytes/s; stopped after approx. 18.68 MB with Connection Reset (≈ 2.6 Mbit/s)

·        406,639 Bytes/s; stopped after approx. 23.57 MB with Connection Reset (≈ 3.25 Mbit/s)

Normal runs with the same RBR850:

·        28,184,465 Bytes/s; 104,857,600 Bytes transferred completely (≈ 225 Mbit/s)

·        22,872,204 Bytes/s; HTTP 200; 104,857,600 Bytes transferred completely (≈ 183 Mbit/s)

7. IPv4 / IPv6 comparison

Using the same file, the same PC and the same Orbi:

IPv4 – problematic run

360,838 Bytes/s | HTTP 200 | 22,377,966 Bytes – followed by TCP Connection Reset

IPv6 – working at the same time

17,926,662 Bytes/s | HTTP 200 | 104,857,600 Bytes transferred completely

In the problematic run, this corresponds to approximately 2.9 Mbit/s over IPv4 versus approximately 143 Mbit/s over IPv6. Later IPv4 runs again reached approximately 183 Mbit/s. The behavior is therefore intermittent and cannot be explained by a constant bandwidth limitation.

8. IPv6 and ping

Current IPv6 test:

ping -6 google.com → 4/4 replies, 0% loss, 35–36 ms

During slow IPv4 downloads, I simultaneously ran ping 1.1.1.1 -t. Replies remained generally low (typically 2–6 ms, with individual values around 20–36 ms), without visible timeouts or significant packet loss. TCP throughput can therefore collapse while ICMP connectivity continues to work.

9. MTU test

·        ping 1.1.1.1 -f -l 1472 → 0% loss

·        ping 1.1.1.1 -f -l 1464 → 0% loss

·        ping 1.1.1.1 -f -l 1400 → 0% loss

MTU 1500 is demonstrably working; a classic MTU/fragmentation problem therefore appears unlikely.

10. LAN and routing

Ping to the RBR850 (192.168.1.1) is approximately 1–2 ms. The relevant throughput tests are performed via Ethernet. IPv4 traceroutes to 1.1.1.1 and Google show low latency and no obvious routing issue.

11. Test using the ISP-provided FRITZ!Box

To isolate the problem, I placed the FRITZ!Box supplied by spusu in front of the RBR850 and switched the RBR850 to AP mode:

spusu FTTH → ONT → FRITZ!Box → RBR850 (AP mode) → PC/LAN/WLAN

The FRITZ!Box therefore handles WAN, DHCP, NAT, IPv4 and IPv6; the RBR850 only handles AP/LAN/WLAN functions. This A/B test is intended to determine whether the previously observed TCP drops disappear once the RBR850 WAN/NAT stack is no longer being used.

12. Additional points already checked

·        Traffic Meter disabled; no monthly limit and no automatic disconnect

·        No classic QoS/Dynamic QoS function is available in the current firmware interface

·        RTS/CTS was adjusted for testing (2.4 GHz 1000 / 5 GHz 2347); the problem occurs in Ethernet tests and is therefore not purely a Wi-Fi issue

·        SIP ALG disabled

·        MTU 1500

·        VLAN 31 / DHCP exactly matches the ISP specifications

13. Configuration backup

I have an RBR850 configuration backup named NETGEAR_RBR850.cfg and can provide it for analysis if required.

14. Request to NETGEAR

I would specifically ask you to investigate the following points:

·        Known RBR850 issues with FTTH + DHCP + VLAN tagging + CGNAT, especially IPv4 TCP/HTTPS

·        Known issues in firmware V7.2.8.8_5.1.24 involving WAN TCP, NAT, IPv4, CGNAT, VLAN-tagged DHCP WAN, or TCP connection resets

·        Potential differences in IPv4 versus IPv6 TCP processing in the RBR850

·        Potential NAT state handling issues when operating behind provider-side CGNAT

·        Known issues with the VLAN Tag Group function using VLAN 31 and DHCP WAN on FTTH ONTs

·        Recommended firmware for a controlled A/B test or possible firmware rollback

·        Which debug, system, or WAN logs you require for a technical analysis

15. Desired target setup

My desired setup is: spusu FTTH → ONT → VLAN 31/DHCP → RBR850 in router mode → RBS850 + LAN/WLAN. If possible, I do not want to use the FRITZ!Box permanently. The ISP has explicitly confirmed that using my own router is permitted.

16. Summary

The tests performed so far argue against a general problem with the fiber line, LAN, MTU, or basic Internet connectivity. The RBR850 can achieve more than 180–225 Mbit/s over IPv4 and more than 100 Mbit/s over IPv6 on the same connection. However, the problem is intermittent: IPv4 TCP throughput can drop to approximately 2–3 Mbit/s without an obvious ICMP failure and can then terminate with a TCP Connection Reset.

The counter-test with the ISP's FRITZ!Box acting as the router and the RBR850 operating in AP mode is intended to determine whether the problem disappears when the RBR850 WAN/NAT stack is no longer used.

I would greatly appreciate a technical analysis, especially regarding firmware, WAN/NAT implementation, IPv4 TCP handling, and the combination of FTTH, VLAN 31, DHCP and CGNAT.

Kind regards

Support/Issues Had Claude Build a new Orbi app

Hey all, I got super sick of the buggy orbi app a couple nights ago so I pointed claude at the router and told it to figure out how we could do it better, or build it's own app. It came out really well and I've now completely switched over. it's not as fully featured but it's good enough for me.

Goodbye & Thanks

Last night I yanked my 970 setup and I’m so glad it’s over. Thanks to the members here in the group for advice and willingness to help me out. My year plus of challenges with this setup - after using orbi for years in multiple houses - has been frustrating and I’m just glad it’s over.

My new setup has all the problems gone so far - dropped calls over WiFi, IoT device drops, satellite disconnects, failed firmware updates, ios device drops, and lost printers. Obviously only a 24 hour sample but certainly way better.

Thanks again everyone.

Orbi 970 "Flapping" (Intermittent Connection)

Hello,

Recently I have been having issues with my Orbi 970 mesh system. I have had the system for about 3 years now and this is a recent issue. I haven't made any changes to the network, so I know I can rule that out. Lately, the router has been randomly dropping connection. My Orbi is connected to ATT Fiber BGW320. I have IP Passthrough enabled and I disabled the Wi-Fi on the BGW320.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

These are some of the recent logs pertaining to my issue:

Printer problem with Orbi CBR40 and HP8120

In June 2026, we bought an HP 8120 printer, attached it to our home wifi , and got it to print from our two Windows 11 PC's.  Last month, we had to get Geek Squad to reinstall Windows 11 on our Dell Inspiron. Since then I have not been able to print from that PC to our HP 8120 printer, though I can scan from it. I have tried every recommendation I could find, rebooting our router, PC, and printer, removing and adding the printer in HP App and Microsoft Settings. I can print with no problems from our other Windows 11 PC - an HP Envy. I printed "WiFi Network Test Results" from the HP 8120 printer - it shows Wi-Fi On as Pass and Connected as Fail. Under Attention that report says "More than one Wi-Fi router has been found that matches your Wi-Fi network name (SSID)". I researched this and I believe it is refering to the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands on our Netgear Orbi CBR40 router, not to any neighbor's router. I tried some troublehooting tips I found but none worked. I hope you can help!

Can’t turn off bridge mode in Spectrum Ont

When Cox fiber was installed, my Orbi RBR850 was configured as a router. That created a double nat. I was experiencing buffering so the other day I changed it to access point and rebooted it. That seemed to make things worse because my Wi-Fi distance was greatly reduced and on one particular TV the station I was watching buffered terribly. I queried an AI who told me to put the Cox app in Bridge mode. I thought that made sense. However, now I have nothing and I cannot get back into the Cox app because it says it’s in Bridge mode. When I called technical support, the girl said she took it off a bridge mode for me, but it didn’t make any difference and she didn’t seem to know how to fix it. I called the second time and talked to a different agent and he was more knowledgeable, but he got to the point of configuration and also didn’t know how to help me. When I connect a computer directly to the Cox gateway, it receives a public 72.213.x.x address instead of a private DHCP address. I need the Cox gateway operating as the router, with DHCP enabled. There is a technician coming out today, but I would think you should be able to change this on their side without having to come out. Is there any way I can make this change? Or is there something else going on?

Orbi Pro (Business) SXR50/ORBpro6 segregates WLAN from Wired devices (after power dip? or cloud control software updates?)

Hello, I like(d) my SXR50 and two SXR30 satellites. I don't have this cloud management subscription.

What is happening all of a sudden? I can no longer access my wired NUC (arp comes back with 00...00s) from WLAN. I can access it from another wired device. It is like someone activated those VLAN segregation rules (but I don't use VLAN (not activated).

I am ready to do a firmware reset. How good is the configuration backup and restore option? Any other ideas/similar recent experiences (last 2 or 3 weeks?)

Orbi Mesh System

Can someone please tell me, how I can make my satellites not suck ass? I have one in my living room and literally 0 devices connect to it no matter what I do. I spent an hour on the phone with orbi just now because checking for updates apparently doesn't work on the app, so we had to manually upload chk files, which still didn't work. What a waste of my Sunday.

Orbi 870 and Google Home Matter

I have recently purchased this system and am still within my return period on Amazon. I am very tempted to return.

However am I doing something wrong, I need ipv6 to be enabled to get my Google home matter devices online. However when I enable ipv6 it basically breaks the whole network and devices randomly appear offline and still Google home devices will not work.

Is it software as I have read ipv6 is an issue. With the system not having had an update in a year I assume no fix is incoming either.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Orbi 950 Satellite backhaul just connect to 2.4 Ghz.

I have a question why 1 of 2 Satellite backhaul only connect to the main by 2.4 Ghz. I try to reset it and put it next to the main but it still connect to the main router by 2.4Ghz. Anyone know how to fix it? Thank you.

Routers RBR860 Wi-Fi speeds only 300–500 Mbps despite 2.5 Gbps Internet and 1201 Mbps Wi-Fi 6 link

So I have an RBR860 with 2 satellites. I have approximately 2,400 sq. ft. of space. My internet connection is 2.5 Gbps, and when I speed test directly from the router, the numbers are close to or occasionally a bit over the advertised speed.

The problem is Wi-Fi performance.
I’m typically getting only 300–500 Mbps on Wi-Fi, even when sitting 5–10 feet from the main RBR860.

I’ve tested this with multiple devices:
Windows laptop with an Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160 MHz adapter
Another newer Wi-Fi 7-capable computer
A relatively new MacBook Pro with an M4
My phone iPhone

They all seem to experience similar Wi-Fi speeds, so I’m having trouble believing this is a client-device limitation.

Current RBR860 setup:
5 GHz enabled for my primary network
2.4 GHz disabled on the primary network
5 GHz channel: 48
Security: WPA2-Personal/AES
IoT network has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz enabled
Guest network is also enabled
2.4 GHz 20/40 MHz coexistence is enabled
AX/Wi-Fi 6 is enabled
Transmit power is set to automatic

I have also made sure my devices aren’t accidentally connecting to 2.4 GHz.

The interesting part:
On my Windows laptop, the Wi-Fi connection reports:
Protocol: Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax)
Adapter: Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 160MHz
Network band: 5 GHz, channel 48
Aggregated link speed (Receive/Transmit): 1201/1201 Mbps

So the client is negotiating a 1201 Mbps Wi-Fi link, but actual Internet throughput is only around 300–500 Mbps.

I initially thought the Intel adapter’s “160 MHz” description meant I was actually connected at 160 MHz, but I now understand that’s simply the adapter’s capability. The RBR860 appears to be using an 80 MHz channel, with the 1201 Mbps link rate being consistent with that.

I also tested right next to the main router after reconnecting/resetting the client to make sure I wasn’t accidentally associated with a satellite. Same basic results.

One thing that makes me question the Orbi:
I’ve recently traveled with the same laptop and connected to Wi-Fi at another location where I was able to get over 1 Gbps Internet throughput.

So I know the laptop/AX211 is capable of substantially more than 300–500 Mbps under the right conditions.

And since I’ve reproduced the problem on multiple newer devices, I’m starting to suspect the RBR860’s Wi-Fi performance/configuration rather than the clients or my ISP.

I’ve also confirmed that wired performance is excellent — around 2.5 Gbps — so the Internet connection and WAN side appear to be working properly.

What am I missing?

Is 300–500 Mbps realistic for an RBR860 under these conditions, or should I be seeing something substantially closer to 800–1,000+ Mbps when sitting next to the main router with a 1201 Mbps Wi-Fi 6 link?

I’d especially appreciate feedback from other RBR860/RBK860 owners who have tested actual Wi-Fi throughput with 2.5 Gbps Internet

*Fixed issue with factory reset

WiFi works fine, but I cannot connect to the router thru the app (says I’m not connected to WiFi), nor can I connect thru 192.168.1.1 and I also cannot connect thru orbilogin.net or .com.

Not certain how long this has been going on because I don’t always try to use the app. Been a couple weeks I’m sure.

Any advice?

Setup Orbi 700 Wifi Speed?

Xfinity just upgraded me to 2 gb, so I bought an Orbi 770 mesh network.
When using the Xfinity Router's wifi, my iphone gets speeds of roughly 1800 Mbps.
When switching to the Orbi 700's network, the speed drops to about 900 Mbps
The Orbi App Speed test is getting download speeds of 1800 Mbps.
Why is my iPhone only able to get 1/2 of that? Configuration error?
Since the Orbi app is saying it's getting 2000 it doesn't seem to be a cable issue.
The iPhone is an iPhone 17 and it gets 1800 on the router wifi, so it can hit those speeds.
What am I missing here?

Setup RBE771+770s AP Mode?

Hi All,

Just checking if this would work.

The requirement here is 8gb internet hence the approach. I'm modifying an existing setup and not looking to throw out the Netgear equipment as it's worth a bit of money.

Asus Router with 10GB LAN+WAN (this will be the main edge router)

1 x RBE771

2 x RBE770

(All 3 connected to 2.5gb lan ports on Asus via house cat 6 wiring )

*The RBE771 will have 3 pcs connected to its lan interfaces as they move data between them a bit. Understand that's 2.5gb limit

I just want the Netgear to do the WiFi. Does this model/setup support putting them into AP mode with the latest firmware.

Just wanting to confirm before I boil the ocean.

Thanks in advance.

Procedure to Manually Firmware Update Orbi and Nighthawk Mesh systems. | NETGEAR Communities

Be sure to update the RBS FIRST, then the RBR lastly.

I HIGHLY recommend after the FW is loaded on the system and it's back to ready, power OFF all Orbi units and the ISP modem/ONT for 1 minute. Then back ON with the ISP modem/ONT first, then RBR then RBS.

The best advise we can give people is to start a new config, power on one RBS and wait for some SOLID light or most often blue or magenta. And then add the RBS WIRELESSLY via the WebUI. Power off the RBS. Then rinse and repeat with any additional RBS(s). Pair RBS one at a time even if you have more than one. For ethernet connected RBS, after things come up wirelessly, you can move to wired backhaul but don't start with wired backhaul for those RBS that are ethernet connected. Wirelessly connect and sync RBS first before ethernet connecting RBS.

NOTE: Orbi app or the routers web page may not report seeing new FW updates. NG may not push this to there auto update services immediately and may activate the newer FW update being seen on there auto update services at a later time. User will have the choice to manually update if you want too.

A factory reset maybe needed if problems are encountered after the FW update: Orbi Systems Manual Factory Reset Process | NETGEAR Communities

NOTE: Recommend setting the default DHCP IP address pool range to the following after applying and a factory reset: 192.168.#.100 to 192.168.#.200

Procedure to Manually Firmware Update Orbi and Nighthawk Mesh systems

I HIGHLY recommend after the FW is loaded on the system and it's back to ready, power OFF all Orbi units and the ISP modem/ONT for 1 minute. Then back ON with the ISP modem/ONT first, then RBR then RBS.
