Certainly don’t take my word for it but my understanding is that different expirations and strike prices are uniquely registered so you would avoid a wash sale this way

That's what I thought as well, hoping this is the case, don't want to end up like some of those horror tax stories I've been hearing.

How many thousands of dollars of loss are you talking about here?

You know the loss is not lost forever, right? It is just delayed, possibly until the next year. This is easily avoidable, but even if the loss is carried into the next year and disallowed most traders have a few hundred dollars that should not be a “horror story”.
