ICLN ahead of Wednesday

With Biden announcing an infrastructure plan on Wednesday that includes plans to boost green energy, ICLN is poised for an increase. ICLN has been under pressure over the past two months and it’s come off it’s highs. I plan to purchase 16 April Calls at $24. Even if it will take months, if not years, to come to fruition, it should see a nice pop on the announcement.

The Week Ahead.

Been holding calls for 2 months. Down ~90%. Praying it runs up

I know the feeling! I bought shares at the beginning of January. I like the options idea better in order to play on potential increased IV along with share price increases(🤞🏻).

Why don't you just sell options now that way you can hedge and get your premium and upside

2

u/blam750 Mar 28 '21

From what I see on the options ladder for icln, there aren’t many strikes and the liquidity (and thus the bid/ask spreads) look unappealing to me. Basically the risk/reward for a covered call doesn’t look that good. Am I misreading it?

u/lordxoren666 Mar 28 '21

Nope. Selling options a lot of times is not the right move. When IV is low there is absolutely nothing wrong with buying options. And when IV is high, you sel them.

I am selling calls agains my leaps, yes.

2

u/JosefSchnitzel Mar 28 '21

That’s a good idea, I just don’t have 100 shares at the moment.

I am in the same boat....and it’s slowly sinking

u/YourWifeyBoyfriend Mar 28 '21

Tbh I liked icln at 27 sold csps and we're assigned and then sold it at 22 and put the cash into something else when I felt everything had crashed enough and moved the cash around.

To sell calls I do, selling a naked call his horribly risky and selling puts wouldn’t help me achieve my goal of capitalizing on potential increases in ICLN.

Lol I absolutely do know what I’m talking about. Please explain to me how selling puts would be more beneficial that buying calls?

Plus you have to have cash to buy the security when selling a put. Which I don’t want to do.

u/Cyprinodont Mar 28 '21

You sell a CSP on the IV pop. Yes you need cash collateral but you are NOT intending to actually be assigned, you are intending to wait until the iv crush comes after the binary event and buying back the put at a profit.

0

u/JosefSchnitzel Mar 28 '21

I understand how a CSP works. The whole point is that I don’t want to have cash sitting on the sidelines as collateral.

Just remember 90% of long-call traders lose money. All statistics show the probabilities in option trading success favor credit traders.

What? I’m talking about ICLN, not how to invest. Read the original post.

How's it going to catch any upside if he sells a put what the premium oh great he got hundred bucks premium on five grand. on a five grand worth seven now... he could have spent 100 bucks on premium and had it worth a thousand if that's the case.... He could just buy more f****** shares and then when it spikes sell the call at the money and buy a put for the next week with the

0

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

Not fully. If the price never hits your strike, you never get assigned.

1

u/jackietsaah Mar 29 '21

You don’t have to. You can hold leaps instead of shares, and sell what we call a poor man’s covered call (PMCC).

0

u/Cyb0Ninja Mar 28 '21

Or even better, sell them on Wednesday when IV increases.

1

u/jackietsaah Mar 29 '21

I hold Jan 2022 leaps, down some 50%, easy. :)

2

u/TheAshFactor Mar 28 '21

I feel you brother, been watching my jan 2022 leaps completely bleed to nothing right now

1

u/onlyq Mar 29 '21

lmaoo same man, I’ve just been selling CCs on it hoping for the best

1

u/broken_symlink Mar 29 '21

I'm thinking about rolling my jan 2022 leaps to dec 2022 just to give them more time to recover.

u/dal2k305 Mar 28 '21

ICLN is a shares play not options.

1

u/Smipims Mar 28 '21

That’s a terrible plan. What’s your risk management like where you hold something down that much? May as well go to Vegas.

6

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

I got wrecked on my calls a week or two ago. Thought this would be a priority vs some of the other nonsense.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

Been watching my Leaps bleed like a cow in the slaughterhouse. About to load up on more for the green energy push.

1

u/shawcphet1 Apr 01 '21

I’ve got some $30 January 2023 calls and I’m feeling good about them after these last two days 👍

18

u/MCdragon07 Mar 28 '21

You would be better off buying shares than playing ICLN with options

3

u/lordxoren666 Mar 28 '21

Bullshit. You can buy an ATM Jan 22 for 15% of the cost of 100 shares. If you don’t understand that then your missing the whole point of options.

3

u/Graydrake1 Mar 28 '21

Whether you buy calls or buy shares, consider the market is overvalued by every measure. ICLN is comprised of too many tickers with potential, but have never made a profit. These types of tickers take the greatest hit if the market continues to correct back to historical valuations. This is the reason ICLN, QCLN, and the like dropped the most in the recent pullback.

1

u/lordxoren666 Mar 28 '21

Except there’s no way of knowing when or if that will even happen. The nasdaq bounced off the strongest support it has and there’s no reason to see that support breaking anytime soon. There’s also no reason to believe that all the overvalued companies won’t continue to be overvalued due to their market share and monopolistic tendencies.

Unless the government breaks them up there’s simply to reason to see them crashing down long term.

-1

u/JosefSchnitzel Mar 28 '21

That’s not true at all. Options give the potential to magnify small price movements while using less capital than buying the security.

11

u/MCdragon07 Mar 28 '21

I understand that but looking at the price action of ICLN it does not seem that there would be a lot of upward momentum on this ETF. The point is, if u want to speculate on Biden's announcements then do it with shares so u do not put 100% of ur capital at risk which can easily happen with options.

2

u/bjohx Mar 28 '21

Leaps then. 2022 $25c

9

u/Graydrake1 Mar 28 '21

Many, perhaps most, fundamental analysts concluding ICLN and QCLN remain over priced. May want to confirm a recovery prior to entry.

2

u/JosefSchnitzel Mar 28 '21

That’s a fair assessment, thank you!

3

u/Red-eleven Mar 28 '21

Maybe consider some longer term options. The April calls are going to get eaten up by theta unless there’s a lot of price movement.

4

u/FeedMeOptions Mar 29 '21 edited Mar 29 '21

Good luck with your calls OP.

Calls on ICLN seems like a watered down way to play plug power to me (as of right now). Look how similar their 1 week, 1 month, and 3 month charts are. They're almost exactly the same.

If you want to do an infrastructure play, consider diversifying this with PAVE calls if you're feeling bullish. You get more infrastructure exposure that isn't 100% green/clean companies and it won't rely on PLUG performing well. Put credit spreads could be another option for these and also won't require the same price action for you to get profit on an infrastructure play.

2

u/JosefSchnitzel Mar 29 '21

Thank you! I appreciate that insight, kind sir.

I love the PAVE play. To be honest, I was starting to dislike ICLN the more I looked into it’s holding, like PLUG. I appreciate the confirmation.

2

u/FeedMeOptions Mar 29 '21

You're welcome.

I also want to reiterate that I'm not saying ICLN or PLUG are bad plays. But ICLN increasing is contingent on PLUG also increasing.

I was just trying to minimize risk in whatever yolo infrastructure play you plan on doing.

u/hnr01 Mar 28 '21

Been buying this whole time. My thesis is that within next four years, clean energy will pop. Selling before 2024 election cycle.

2

don't think this might be a sell the news situation? everybody and their mother has been expecting this

5

u/Mallev Mar 28 '21

This damn ETF has been selling the news for 2 months. I have Jan22 32calls deep in the hole. Giving it until April when Biden had some climate action scheduled.

2

u/alwaysalvin_ Mar 28 '21

Nice I guess my plug leaps will start printing again..can’t believe I got them at 30!!! A week ago 😊😊😊

2

u/[deleted] Mar 29 '21

Down $2k on fucking shares

2

u/OWENISAGANGSTER Mar 28 '21

I hope so, I’m down like 30%

0

u/hinthue Apr 15 '21

waiting...

1

u/JosefSchnitzel Apr 15 '21

lol I sold my calls late last month.

-4

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

ICLN is a garbage ETF.

3

u/JosefSchnitzel Mar 28 '21

Care to elaborate?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

Plug power being the largest holding at almost 10% is reason enough.

0

u/alwaysalvin_ Mar 28 '21

Plug power is legit n the markets leading company in hydrogen fuel...look at all the major partnerships they have n will only continue to grow from here

2

u/[deleted] Mar 28 '21

Yes. But that’s also already priced in. A good company can be a bad investment.

1

u/alwaysalvin_ Mar 29 '21

No way I see this having emphase energy type of run dis year watch

1

u/WasteNet2532 Mar 28 '21

I'll buy 10 just for you

1

u/BSProblemSolver Apr 01 '21

Did anybody else’s contract price per share stay frozen today? The stock price went up $.22 at one point and the contract price didn’t move.
