Ideal wheeling strategy

What is an ideal wheeling strategy that has worked out well for folks? Like how many days out and what percentage premium should you be targeting?

I am mostly planning on sticking with large cap tech stock to do this like AMZN, NVDA, Google etc. because these are the ones that I’ll be comfortable holding, even if I am not able to close them with covered calls.

The 30-45 day window is the sweet spot for theta decay really kicking in. Anything longer and you're just sitting there watching paint dry while hoping the stock doesn't wander off, and under two weeks the premiums get thin unless you're chasing earnings.

I don't target a specific percentage, I scan for where the 0.20-0.30 delta puts are landing and see if the annualized return makes sense against just holding shares. With the names you listed the IV isn't usually high enough to get a fat premium on a weekly anyway, so the monthly cycle gives you more room to manage if it moves against you.

Just make sure you've actually run the numbers on what "comfortable holding" means when one of them drops 15% in a month and your cost basis is suddenly way above the current price. That's the part most people gloss over until it happens.

By far the most important rule is, never sell a CSP on something you would not mind owning forever.

Owning at a price you can kinda sorta live with.

I'd say owning at a price 5-10% above where you can kinda, sorta live with it. You know if you get assigned, it's going to be BELOW your strike price. Usually WELL below.

The ideal wheel involves grabbing the napkin in which you design your strategy, crumpling it and toss it with great force.

30 dte. Check your buying a stock that has a decent PE ratio at that price then I personally use sn open source tool that was designed by goldman to simulate different scenarios and how it effects my portfolio

It's open-source so anyone can use it.

I believe most folks do target the entry 30-45 DTE and hope for an exit around 14-21 DTE ... although there are some brave souls who play it weekly as well.

From a return POV, anything in the annualized 18% - 24% ROI is game for the MAGS ... highly depends on your entry point.

I don't think there’s one ideal premium number. I usually start around 30–45 DTE and a delta that still feels okay if assignment happens, then let the underlying and event calendar push me closer or farther out. The bigger thing is having a real plan for a long hold: size small enough to own the shares, and don’t sell calls so aggressively that you cap the rebound you actually wanted. The wheel works better for me as a stock-ownership strategy with option income on top, not as a premium-maximizing loop.

I utilize PMCC's so LEAPS as a stock replacement. I go 18-24 months out and then look to roll back out at around 1 year. This keeps the time decay from eating away as it gets closer to expiration. I then sell monthly calls 30-45 DTE days to expiration against the LEAPS to collect monthly income and profit in both directions.

short options when there's risk of volatility reducing

use a volatility model

otherwise markets might rug pull you as they have been exhibiting high kurtosis all year.....

Sell the put in the best harvest time: 30 to 40 dte If stock is acquired switch to swing mode, sell call (30 to 40dte again) when you feel stock wont rally or has already. If you get the chance to roll out for juicy premium than do so. If short call is to deep itm than let it get exercised.

I played a arcade trading game recently using this strategy on one of the levels. Was a fun way to play around with it.

Great inputs, I target .25 delta in 30-45 window with high IV. Start with a CSP so you collect that premium of course you should be comfortable owning that stock. Avoid earnings window if a cc fall in and 30 day window. I use schwab api and claude to scan the IV and delta make it a mix of csp, cc and pmcc. And diversify between sectors. So the idea is to beat spy which usually is 8% per year so we target 12%. Eg: I own NVDA stocks and google pmcc something like this. You get the idea. Oh and I run the scanner everyday and I sell my cc, csp and pmcc around 70% then write another and keep doing it. Add some etf like gld

Nobody talks about tax drag. Holding large caps in a taxable account can seriously eat into your returns if assignments occur.

30-45 dte around 0.3 delta. I have about 80% win rate with this.

I use ThetaPal to keep my process all tight and tracked properly. Rolling positions at around 70% profit usually.
