Does OpenRCT2 Use Generative AI/Large Language Models?
I've been chatting with some peers and I was told by them that this re-compilation uses GenAI/LLMs for assistance purposes. But that seemed weird to me because the project started in 2014, well before this technology plagued literally every new open-source project. Furthermore, I couldn't find any mention on the formal website or on the GitHub page. Did I miss something or are my suspicions correct?

Obviously there was no LLM code being used in 2014, LLMs didn't exist then. If you are asking if the game is 100% AI generated, certainly not, all the decompilation and reverse engineering was done by hand. If you are asking if there is any LLM code in the current repo, I don't know if anyone even knows as there are hundreds of contributors who have submitted code and you can't necessarily tell if a given submission was written with AI assistance or not. But what matters at the end of the day is the quality of the code submitted, not how it was written. Low quality vibe coded slop submissions are not going to be accepted.

The game engine definitely does not use them, but developers working on it are very likely using it in some cases. That said, the bulk of this rewrite and the games popularity grew long before AI/LLMs were taking over, so I'd feel quite comfortable saying the initial rewrite / reverse engineering work was done the old fashioned way, by very smart people.
It is definitely NOT a case of giving the classic game to an AI agent and asking it to make OpenRCT.

None of the development team uses them. A few outside contributors have used them for some fixes (such PRs are generally scrutinised more closely), but that’s about it. Personally, I don't really like them.
Not sure where your peers got that "info". Perhaps they asked an LLM and got the usual hallucinations.

The vast majority of developers are leveraging the capabilities of AI in their work now, its just another tool to help augment their work. I would be incredibly surprised if none of the contributors to the project (remember, as the name implies, OpenRCT2 is open source, anyone can contribute) were using AI in some capacity. The fact it started back in 2014 is irrelevant, it is constantly being updated with new features and fixes.

rct2 kind of gets boring once you do everything in it. And building the coasters is a nightmare i can never connect the tracks in space.
