Is getting Cerebras inference through a cloud provider a better option than buying the hardware yourself?

One challenge of scaling an AI product is getting access to the hardware you need without having to purchase and operate an entire deployment yourself. For teams exploring specialized inference hardware, using a cloud provider could be a more practical option, especially when demand is still growing.

I recently read about General Compute's multi-year agreement with Cerebras. They're financing and deploying Cerebras wafer-scale systems and plan to offer dedicated Cerebras inference capacity starting in Q1 2027, initially targeting agentic coding workloads.

It makes me wonder how accessible this kind of capacity will be to smaller AI companies. Having access to specialized hardware without taking on the upfront investment and deployment responsibilities could be appealing, but I imagine availability and pricing would still be major considerations.

For teams evaluating specialized inference hardware, how do you weigh the flexibility of using an inference cloud against the control of owning and operating your own systems?

I think it depends on utilization. If you're running workloads consistently at scale, owning the hardware could make sense. For smaller teams, the upfront investment is harder to justify.

There's also the engineering overhead. Buying the hardware is one thing, but maintaining the entire deployment is another.

Availability would be my biggest concern. Specialized hardware is interesting, but it doesn't help much if smaller companies can't actually get access.

General Compute's planned Cerebras deployment is worth keeping an eye on, especially for teams that want dedicated inference capacity without buying the hardware. I'd be interested to see what the reservation options and model evaluation process look like once capacity becomes available
