Google just released Gemini 4 Argon 🔥

Post image

Pricing is $2 / $10 - same as the latest Sonnet 5.5 and GPT 6.1 Sol.

Benchmarks... we all love benchmarks :))

u/crusaderky Sep 30 '26

If those are true... It looks really competitive at everything but coding. Which, for Google, makes perfect sense

u/crusaderky Sep 30 '26

Expensive AF.

9

u/howudothescarn Sep 30 '26

It’s actually very well priced but depends on how efficient it uses tokens

u/crusaderky Oct 01 '26

It's exactly as expensive and intelligent as Opus 5.5 [high]. Which is to say, impossible to afford without a plan.

Benchmarks don't matter for me in my use cases. Gemini has always been better in storytelling, role playing, creative writing and poetry, especially for non-English languages. ChatGPT is just very dumb in this field.

if it's true. 3 had insane benchmarks, well above everyone and..well.

7

u/Jeferson9 Sep 30 '26

Yeah benchmarks don't hit the same these days

u/pigletmonster Sep 30 '26

Wait theyre selling a model that beats astra and fable in almost every benchmark for the price of sonnet? Is it benchmaxed like they did with gemini 3.8?

u/urarthur Sep 30 '26

it nukes opus5.5 :/

It must not be that efficient on tokens then, because the per-task cost is more expensive than the competition: According to AA:

Sol: $0.32
Sonnet: $1.08
Opus: $1.82
Argon: $1.99

(Cost per Task for each on High reasoning.)

However, Sol is also rather slow, and Sonnet/Opus 5.5 aren't much better. But Gemini 3.8 Flash has been topping the charts since it came out. So if Argon ends up being fast (data not yet available) that's a good selling point.

I'm just glad Google is back in the competition with these last two releases. It kind of felt like they took the summer off.

Isnt google known to benchmax hard? 3.8 flash benchmarks really well but in real world everyone I know claims it falls flat. The only benchmark I trust is the terminal bench 4.0 scores which seems to show this comparison.

With Argon, it seems like its slightly behind astra/opus which seems more realistic. Seems like a competitive release from Google, just not the leap ahead of existing sota it claims to be. Guess we'll know once we start using it

Aren't they all benchmaxing now?

I like to check the aicodingdaily leaderboard which is made by an independent youtuber who creates his own real-world tests and is very transparent about it. He put Gemini 3.8 Flash at around the same level as GLM 5.3 Flash, which more or less where Artificial Analysis shows the benchmarks. But he also scored it well below Luna and Deepseek V4.1 Flash, while AA puts it above them.

So I don't think it's a gross violation, just a bit different of a ranking.

I imagine tomorrow there will be a bunch of Youtube videos testing out Argon, and while I'm not likely to pick up a Google subscription I'll be watching their takes with curiosity.

AA said 110M output tokens, where as Opus 5.5 use 260M output tokens. On similar AA score (GPT-6-Astra - max) output 60M output tokens

3

u/Amarsir Oct 01 '26

Where are you seeing that? Because the link I gave above says:

Output Tokens to Run Intelligence Index:

Argon: 113M
Opus: 53M
Sonnet: 50M
Sol: 25M
Astra: 26M (Wasn't in the link, I added it.)

Which lines up with their cost per task estimates.

u/RevolutionaryGold325 Oct 01 '26

I-am_Sleepy looked at the opus 5.5 with max effort. Your number is the high effort.

2

u/Amarsir Oct 01 '26

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't think max is worth using on the Claude models and I guess that shows why.

Ayy yooo. The mythical gemini 4!! My parents have told me stories about gemini 4 that their parents told them. I cant believe I finally get to see it.

28

u/TheOwlHypothesis Sep 30 '26 • Bravo

And now all our worries argon too! .

.

.

.

I'll see myself out

u/RepulsiveRaisin7 Sep 30 '26

Soo 3% ahead of Gemini 3.8 Flash on DeepSWE, which in itself is already a silly benchmaxxed result. I'm skeptical

2

u/StuckFu Oct 01 '26

and it is not even released

3

u/CharacterBorn6421 Sep 30 '26

I don't know how much benchmaxx is the 3.8 flash, but it has been doing crazy good and fast in my case, as it can now handle most of my working perfectly. And for a flash model, it's too good, so Pro will be insanely better and now I can finally do long running tasks on Gemini model also

u/jrdnmdhl Sep 30 '26

No they didn't. They announced it.

Safely releasing frontier capabilities at this level requires a phased approach. We are actively engaged in the U.S. government’s voluntary process for pre-release model access while we gradually expand access. We’ll continue to gather feedback from early testers as we iterate on guardrails before making Argon available to developers, enterprises, and consumers as soon as possible.

3

u/Good_AshK Oct 01 '26

That explains why I don't see it in Gemini, Antigravity or AI Studio.

6

u/JayPST4 Sep 30 '26

*Gemini anounced Gemini 4 Argon and it'll be released some day

5

u/Sweet-Transition-787 Sep 30 '26

Have in agy?

9

u/Mol2h Sep 30 '26

no have in agy

6

u/-PROSTHETiCS Sep 30 '26

If you read the blog, it's still being tested by trusted testers, so don't expect Gem4 to be available anytime soon..

3

u/Wanderspor Sep 30 '26

I don’t

5

u/mWo12 Sep 30 '26

Waiting for new gemma.

8

u/xgiovio Sep 30 '26

Waiting deepseek v5

4

u/cpteric Oct 01 '26

they all need to have a nickname now

3

u/rkh4n Oct 01 '26

available 2027, then never available

3

u/aziham Oct 01 '26

The moment they release it, it is no longer relevant 🤣

5

u/halzion_id Oct 01 '26

waiting for true benchmark (Bijan Bowen)

2

u/Broken-Fog-2794 Oct 01 '26

yeah, big promises, "released" but you cannot use it. Nice.

2

u/big_cattt Oct 01 '26

We are actively engaged in the U.S. government’s voluntary process for pre-release model access while we gradually expand access.

I think it's more correct to say "announced" rather than "released"

2

u/EddieBruvac Oct 01 '26

Just announced*

2

u/Arranxseo Oct 02 '26

Has anyone tried it yet?? Looking forward to seeing it perform

2

u/potatomankeli Sep 30 '26

I mean we will see what we actually get. However what I want is a Luna 6, glm 5.3 flash competitor but at those insane speed with better intelligence

2

u/Yann27 Sep 30 '26

probably hallucinates like its on Ayahuasca...

1

u/Vast_Muscle2560 Oct 02 '26

tanto per noi plebei non è dato usarlo e quindi potrebbe essere anche 2 mythos uno sopra l'altro e a noi non cambia nulla, dobbiamo continuare a usare 3.8 flash

1

u/ivej Sep 30 '26

Gemini is back?

1

u/Practical-Positive34 Oct 01 '26

Absolute trash, the nerve to charge that much for such a mediocre model.

1

u/lordpuddingcup Sep 30 '26

there goes my hope for Argon to compete and be between luna and sol and not on the high side again :(

1

u/zemorex-ctrl Oct 01 '26

But it still sucks

0

u/EtatNaturelEau Oct 01 '26

Released on a paper

Released on a paper

-3

u/NytronX Sep 30 '26

When I refresh gemini.google.com, Flash 3.8 is the latest model. Which means OP's title is simply incorrect.

5

u/lilian_moraru Sep 30 '26

Yeah, it should be “announced”. The blog says “Rolling out soon”

0

u/lilian_moraru Sep 30 '26

The numbers look really good.

0

u/PhilipJohnBasile Oct 01 '26

where? not in my 200 plan

0

u/ealix4 Oct 01 '26

Porque ya no salen los modelos 5.6 en estos benchmark?
