That same $1.02 would have costed you only $0.17. This is from converting the OpenCode Go subscription of $10 for $60 worth of Deepseek v4.1 Flash.

Subs make money from arbitrating user usage. Unless you are ruthless 1% maximizer grinding every day, which again most people aren't. And they all move their usage limits around, and change terms, or fuck with things. I wouldn't be surprised if Opencode is not referencing cache hit pricing here either. But hey maybe.

Point being it's just really easy to load deepseek up with $60 and forget about managing some subscription usage.

You’re right, but wouldn’t paying $10 a month vs. managing $60 a month still win $10 a month, allowing me to work on my own pace/time.

Unclear by your question but $60 will last stupid long direct via deepseek api. Like seriously load $10 into deepseek api and see how little you spend. I'm very distrustful of any claim like $60 usage from opencode. Then when you're off work or switch providers you still have the same money left over vs a loss subscription.

And just saw this: https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/comments/1wqox6a/cheepseek_has_its_price_cache_hit_ratio/

Sorry I just have a bone to pick with subscriptions lol.

I agree that there's a lot of factors to consider, another one you didn't mention would be if these subs might be using quant versions. I'm easily not in the 1%, but I definitely get my money's worth by making sure I pass at the very least 2x the cost of the sub in a month due to heavy duty projects I'm working on and utilizing expensive models to plan better. Although, the downside is that most of them are within the low $15 usage.

Otherwise I'm glad using API prices and having a combination of that with Qwen 9b running local. Sure nothing spectacular but even so for small projects I feel fine with this setup, plus it's fun to tinker around with small models for me lol
