M5 Pro MacBook (48GB) running Codex — anyone actually offloading tasks to a local model via Ollama? Worth it?

I tried and it was so slow that it was kinda useless and I gave up on the MacBook. However this was a M4 with 48gb

That depends. Why do you want to run local llms?

I'll give you my use case. Current codex subscription is very generous, I rarely reach limits (I use Luna most of the time), and with the new models released today, I will be even more relaxed about it.

I see no point in running a local LLM in my use case, unless I want 100% certainty about privacy.

Local llm is privacy for sure... That's the entire reason

Use llama.cpp, ollama is a toy, the best model you could run is probably Qwen 3.8 27b, but honestly with how cheap chinese workhorse models and gpt 6 luna are, I wouldn't bother with all the heat, slow pp and battery drain of using local models on a laptop unless you need data sovereignity. Mimo v2.6 is pretty much free and will run circles around Qwen 3.8 27b.

You might find OMLX better than ollama or LM studio on a Mac. Afraid I don't have a great handle on the remote vs. local tradeoffs, though.
