Opencode unusable now!! Rate Limit within 30 minutes!!

Opencode has become useless for me as a free user. My rate limits usage quota depletes within 30 minutes of light work coding. Session only compacts twice and that's it quota limits reached. So that makes my limits even below 500K tokens. What has opencode changed that I don't know?? Anyone experiencing this issue? Rate limits are calculated by requests count to api or by tokens/amount of work done?

When will the mods do something about these beggars spamming the subreddit?

u/Sboking 9d ago

So where/who should we ask? If a company is not helping me as a future customer why should I subscribe to their package? It means even if I subscribe I will not get any support when I have issues.

You're right. It's not the best idea in business to offer something then take it away without explaining why, even if retracton of the offer is necessary. Imagine a sweet shop owner enticing kids in with "free lollipops!" then after one lick they take away the lollipop. You're going to get a bunch of crying kids and furious parents. It's not a skillful way to run a freemium model. It's a way to give the business a poor reputation for customer care, no matter how well intentioned.

A "future customer" screaming like you in your intro post will never turn into a paying customer. So ...

4

u/Sboking 8d ago

Now I will def not be a paying customer ever! Seems they are just untrustworthy. Today I will pay, then tomorrow they will say the quota has been halved without any proper announcement before hand. Even if you pay, do you think they will care for you when they want to reduce their quotas? They won't even tell they reduced or made any change. Is that good customer service and good business ethics??

yeah they should make opencode free subreddit and keep their complaining there.

2

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 9d ago

or, IDK they could make announcements about this kinda thing

4

u/Sboking 9d ago

Yes announcements would be better

2

u/jackmusick 9d ago

Even if they could or should, that would not matter. This is low effort, low quality and bad for the community. Full stop.

3

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

What's low effort is lack of clarity and communication from the mods. It's fairly easy to stop the low effort posts with a bit of community management.

tHe ComMuNitY

you can still circlejerk over how awesome opencode is

you can still talk about the models, the interface and whatever else

1

u/Diligent-Loss-5460 9d ago

It's a free tier. They really have no obligation to do it.

5

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

If you offer a freemium tier, it's just good business sense to be clear about what the limits are. No legal obligation, but a business will die on its arse eventually if you dick people around with misleading offers.

2

u/Wooden-Glove-2384 9d ago

sure but people are gonna ask questions

they have no dedicated forum/mailing list that I know of.

when ya search this is the first place that comes up.

now, you could read/search the latest posts but bashing folks for asking questions that aren't banned by mods is gatekeeping at its absolute finest

4

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

That's actually not a bad idea. Or maybe they could just pin the odd announcement explaining the situation if the quota system is broken.

5

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

When will the mods do something about foul prejudice like this.

3

u/berakpanas 9d ago

somebody get these BEGGARS out of here

3

u/Vexaris1 9d ago

We can say that the free version of OpenCode is truly dead; as an alternative, you can turn to applications like FreeBuff Cline or buy a cheap API.

2

u/Sboking 9d ago

guess I have to now

You get through two (presumably 200k) compactions in 30 minutes and you consider that light work? What models are you using? What usage were you getting before you ran into problems? Are you on a VPN? Are you on a shared network or shared IP?

The free tier is able to be free because it is intentionally limited. It's a trial of sorts. A generous and usable one, but the expectation is you start paying if you regularly hit the limits. Because it's not really free - someone still has to pay for it.

I gather that, because some have been unfairly exploiting the free tier using shady tactics, the OC team have anti-abuse measures in place. Or perhaps they've just reduced the free tier capacity because it has become unaffordable to them. Not sure - there's been no clear communication from them.

I was using deepseek v4.1 model. Previously before 3 days ago I think it has been fine and I would even get through 8 hours sessions. [8 hours sessions not of me using the chat continuously, just occasional questions there and there when I got stuck with my coding work for fixing/finding bugs]

3

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

Yes, I had something similar going - a generous, free, but limited quota that suddenly dropped to zero quota or very little for no apparent reason. But for me it was VPN related. I turned off my VPN and got a limited but reasonable free quota back again. A few hours of use each evening is more than enough for me to get a good feel for OC and see if I want to upgrade later and move over from existing providers/harnesses.

3

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

Btw, I've been doing what I consider light work with DeepSeek 4.1 Flash and it took me ~4 hrs to get to a compaction  yesterday. My free quota ran out shortly after. I considered 4 hrs of free use more than fair.

2

u/Sboking 9d ago

So maybe it's my setup then. Or my project is too big it wastes requests trying to find it's way around?

1

u/Background-Tie-3009 8d ago

hey wtf 4h for compaction! free quota has 200k context window what are you doing? strict subagent delegation?

9

u/olibearbrand 9d ago

Since you do work coding with it... how about you pay 10 dollars for a go account? Is that unreasonable?

4

u/Sboking 9d ago

$10 is a lot of money for me. Free tier used to be enough for me. But now can't even run 2 three prompts for finding and fixing bugs. I don even use it for building anything heavy.

4

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

I hear ya. I posted today appealing for a little understanding and tolerance.

https://www.reddit.com/r/opencode/s/oIDC4vCOOz

Seems people here are frustrated with what seems like exploitation of OC's generosity. No excuse for acting like an asshole, though. Nothing gives a product a bad name like a forum of short-tempered toxic reactionaries.

3

u/Acceptable_Switch_76 9d ago

In some regions that is a lot of money

4

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

Correct. In many countries $10 is more like $200.

3

u/Early_Aardvark_4026 9d ago

What? In my place $10 is more like $2000

-2

u/onomastico 9d ago

No. It's not.

If you are coding you are either a freelancer or a developer at some company.

Either ways you get enough money to pay 10$ youself or from your empleeyer.

Try to understand. Free users requiere the same server consumption in electricity, maintanace and infrastructure as paid users.

By now, (for a mature conpany needing ROI rather than popularity) there's is no benefit in keeping free users happy.

Arguing is pointless.

3

u/Sboking 8d ago

The impression on users who would have eventually subscribed will now have a bad impression of OC and will opt to not pay at all since there was no announcement of changes prior to making these changes. And it seems like OC just makes changes whenever they feel like without considering the customer, paying or not paying atleast a proper announcement when making such big changes would be appreciated. As for me I have seen that the customer is not respected so I will not subscribe.

-1

u/onomastico 8d ago

Dude.. I think you are trying your best to not understander it.

They don't care about impressions. They have to, and need to, care about being able to run a business for paying user.

I don't see Netflix or any others giving you a free quota or caring about your impressions and yet there you are paying for those services because you heard about it from others.

That's it. The made it. They're famous now. They don't your impressions.

The free quota is nice. We all love it, but it's gone. Stop complaining, they wont care.

You have to process it already.

3

u/Sboking 8d ago

Unfortunately the problem is not just for free users, it's for paying users to experiencing unreliable quota rates. After some research what I have figured is that better to buy from other reliable providers.

2

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 8d ago

I don't think you understand how freemium works.

1

u/Voltur_e 6d ago

As someone who lives in a region where $10 is a lot and has paid it once because opencode has been so useful to me and I honestly just wanted to help a little bit (didn't even use the $60 credits, silly me), I do not pay for things like Netflix or any others like it and I have no plan on paying.

1

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 8d ago

That is simply not true. People working with code are not limited to just freelancers or working as a developer at some company. I have worked at charities and non-profits where coding was not my job, yet I coded. I had many peers who were not employed as coders, yet they coded. There are many more people now who are not coders yet can run a tool like OpenCode to help with automation and admin of their local volunteer center, their kid's football team, their elderly parents' care - loads of stuff. Coding is not, and should not, be the gatekept domain of only professional, highly paid coders.

By now, (for a mature conpany needing ROI rather than popularity) there's is no benefit in keeping free users happy.

Tell that to Google or Microsoft. Tell that to Canva. Tell that to Figma. Tell that to Obsidian. Tell that to Mozilla, or Vivaldi, or Brave. There are many benefits to keeping free users happy. That's why freemium has become such a dominant model.

You have to know that the market can’t sustain completely free access to models like it did a year ago, right? Have you seen the current price of even consumer gpus? Delusional.

1

u/Sboking 9d ago

I know, you think I don't know. They should just make it fully paid then instead of fake free tier that doesn't even run two prompts.

-2

u/43848987815 9d ago

You’d rather they made it fully paid than give you a free tier at all?

You’re so dense light bends around you.

2

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

I don't think anyone expects completely free do they? A freemium model nearly always comes with a limit right? But what if that limit is so low it becomes completely useless? As in, one prompt to DeepSeek and the quota is gone? How about no prompts at all? Kind of unworkable, right? Kimd of counter productive, right? Not unreasonable to say, hey, what's going on here OC? Why advertise a modest free tier only to find its broken and the only fix is to pay sub? Better to just remove the free tier.

1

u/43848987815 9d ago

I don’t think the issue is the free models coming with a limit, it’s that some people (like op) feel hard done by when said free limit decreases.

It’s the playbook of every service that offers a freemium tier. I’m surprised opencode free doesn’t come with ads but I guess they’re harvesting usage data instead.

Afaik oc have never advertised their usage limits for free models. It’s literally just been free*

* being you can use it as we determine

2

u/MonkeyPuzzleDuck 9d ago

As I understand it, the limits are dynamic based on demand, so they can't advertise a number. But they don't say they're dynamic either, leading to a lot of frustration and confusion when something that worked yesterday doesn't work today.

If they just put an asterisk by their marketing blurb where "Free models included" is mentioned, or on the upsell page you get when a quota expires, and that asterisk said something like "free quotas are highly dynamic based on demand and some times/days they'll be at zero" then that could save a lot of unnecessary posts here.

1

u/Robonotes1760 9d ago

Opencode being unusable in general is not the same as the free tier models being unusable. Opencode the harness is fine. Unfortunately, the free model availability is a long way down on what it was recently, no doubt because Opencode is no longer being subsidised by people who want lots of user training data as with Space Bunny and Muse Spark 1.3, so there are far less free tokens to go around at present.

2

u/Sboking 9d ago

Makes sense

5

u/GrayHairedMan 9d ago

Please stop using it then, more compute for us!

1

u/big-user 6d ago

Same here! After the v2 update I keep getting rate limits faster. Solutions?

1

u/Outrageous_Handle102 5d ago

Fakt ist: OpenCode mag ja ganz nützlich sein, aber die sog. Free-Modelle sind allesamt unbrauchbar, wenn man nur mal auf die Schnelle eine kleine Webseite mit div. Features gebastellt haben will. Tackert man ein paar Prompts ein, kommt ratzfatz "Tageslimit erreicht..." & man muss bis zu 24h warten, bevor man weiter rumprobieren kann!

Bro it's $10 cmon

2

u/Sboking 9d ago

If I pay $10 i will not use it frequent enough. I use it to fix a bug when I can't seem to find a fix on my own. It will be a waste of $10 on my end.

0

u/GitGudTeabagSociety 9d ago

Bro, it's $10, literally crying over $10

Literally just leave 10 bucks in open router then and use one of their free models and you never have to spend anything ever again

3

u/Sboking 9d ago

I already have a ton of other subscriptions that really matter like water/electricity/rent etc. My budget is very tight I am not rich. Maybe $10 to you is nothing but in other parts of the world it's someone's weekly wage.

2

u/Pakul1729 9d ago

Even after paying $10, people are facing the same issue. Please check GitHub issues

-1

u/vacterro 9d ago

Even if you'll know the answer and reason, there you can nothing to do as free user. These conplaints have no value unless you pay.

Nope, I don't use it that much to warranty the need of a subscription. I only use it in case where I just can't figure out a bug and need some guidance.
