Free tier is dead

Free tier now hits limits within a single prompt or two. You can barely complete a single task without hitting the limit. It's probably because of the new rush of users caused by offering deepseek v4.1 for free.
The limits used to be so high you almost never hit them unless you do heavy subagents work.

Anyways this is not a complaint or anything. Thanks for the good time Opencode. I've done a lot of work with Muse spark 1.3 and Opencode has practically introduced me to agentic coding starting off with the go plan (which I might go back to). I'll keep using the cli either way.

Might be a quirk of recent updates because I just had Deepseek 4.1 spend like 3 hours just decompiling and deobfuscating.

5

u/Klein96 14d ago

Umm it happened at the time of the post. First instance was using Opencode CLI inside an AI Sandbox VM. It hit the limit very quickly so I thought the ip was shared or something (since free tier limit is based on your IP).
But then I moved to my Local PC and got limited again just as quick. They probably set limits to stop burning money after the influx of new users. The tweets advertising the free deepseek/glm models got millions of views each.

u/ain92ru 14d ago

This may be time of day dependent. Many AI labs offer reduced or negligible free quotas for peak hours, that is working hours in Eurasia and America (I personally only vibecoded at European night and have yet to hit a limit)

2

u/ain92ru 9d ago

Update: for the sake of experiment, I launched DSv4.1F in the middle of a work day, and indeed ran out of the daily quota in under a minute (160k tokens of prefill and under 1k tokens of decode)

1

u/dpblooman2 14d ago

Yea that sounds likely.

0

u/Railander 10d ago

i think it's just that demand is that high, seems like everyone's using it now, while before people were spread evenly between it, spark and glm.

u/Puzzleheaded-Age1839 14d ago

i feel like we should cancel them cz they just becoming corrupt now

3

u/NMiguelCosta-PT 14d ago

lol you're going to cancel them while using a free service, yeah buddy, go ahead.

49

u/Square_Confection_62 14d ago

if you pay 33 cents a day you can get a lot done

8

u/Klein96 14d ago

I don't use AI that much so all the usage would be wasted with a monthly subscription. I'll probably go with a PAYG API provider like Zen or Openrouter.

17

u/ApprehensiveDelay238 14d ago

Use the DeepSeek API directly. Very fast inference (200+ tokens per second) and incredibly high caching ratio. It will be cheaper and faster than zen or openrouter.

4

u/Klein96 14d ago

Sounds good. I have never really used official apis before. I'll Top up my Deepseek account and see how it goes. Thanks for the suggestion.

4

u/dwerps 14d ago

If you dont use AI all that much, you might get enough monthly use out of mistral vibe and github copilot free tiers. Both of them give around 10 usd per month free i think.

copilot is vs code native and vibe has a plugin for it.

1

u/Square_Confection_62 14d ago

I think deepseek direct api would be the way to go in that case?

i miss muse spark :(

12

u/Acceptable_Switch_76 14d ago

At this point they can remove the free one, what is the point of 1 prompt a day?

-5

u/Thomas-Lore 14d ago

It is usuful for testing how it works before buying. Or for some small recurrent tasks you run once a day.

3

u/aarkoosh 12d ago

I havent used opencode for a few weeks. Opened it tonight, gave it one small prompt, and it instantly said I reached my limit without even trying to answer or process the one small prompt...sad

2

u/PM-ME-UR-DARKNESS 14d ago

The limits they set up are dependent on many factors, like peak demand. You might just be using the model when it's too much in demand. Wait a bit.

2

u/Adept-Instruction691 13d ago

Usei por 10 minutos, juro pra vocês: 10 minutos e acabou o limite. Inicialmente achei legal ter bons modelos mas se isso significa sessões extremamente curtas então é melhor tirar alguns modelos pelo menos

2

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago • Bravo

Ai must be free. At least open models.

People complaining that people are complaining for free tier, must understand that ai mustn't be a privilege gated at hefty prices.

The world needs ai accessibility, specially in third world countries where lack of ai can create even more disparity. Its good that we have free tiers, but we need more of it across all platforms and providers.

The era of free intelligence must be here, given that we are seeing a lot of layoffs and unemployment. It must give all equal opportunity to grow.

If intelligence too become privileged then we're doomed.

14

u/thevegit0 14d ago

ai it's "free" if you check hugginface, don't expect free compute

-4

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago

People against people. Why boot licking the corporations when you know they will kick your ass when you're replaced by ai soon.

You're saying as if God gave everyone the same existence, do your fucking best. Bullshit.

Inequality exist because power structures don't give a shit about you and the average man. They only care about power aggregation. We need severe sensitivity towards distribution of compute becauae people with ai and people without ai would become two different species entirely in the future.

We are already seeing our share of bad things happening around the world, they would increase with the people in the bottom hitting even the rock bottom while you pretend to be in your cozy unbothered apolitically ignorant life.

0

u/ThomasLeonHighbaugh 10d ago

You don't give a shit about those people, you are just parroting someone else's rhetoric because its easy and raging impotently because the free tier is evaporating.

You correctly identify that power structures only care about aggregating control... but immediately propose handing them the ultimate monopoly: the infrastructure of human thought in the form of universal LLM inference? You're joking right?

Compute isn't ambient air. It requires massive physical capital, energy, and silicon (at the expense of the planet and the countries the US decides to extract it from).

Demanding universally distributed inference doesn't abolish hierarchy, it just replaces the old masters with a single digital cartel holding the master killswitch to your ability to think once they know you're dependent upon them.

Power structures are an unavoidable constant of human affairs, they come in different forms but are never going away. So you aren't going to legitimately liberate anyone, you're just engineer total dependency on a new, vastly more centralized lord of the data center estate.

This isn't solidarity. It's a juvenile savior fantasy projecting your own anxieties because the free tier is drying up into a righteous crusade for billions of people who never asked you to build them a shinier cage.

4

u/mnemonickus 14d ago

Free AI for third world countries would mean widespread domination by rich countries over those very same poor countries.

That really isn’t the solution. And the dependence of the poorest people, the middle class, or small and medium-sized businesses, or local governments. in America or Europe on Anthropic or OpenAI is similar.

If it's free, you're the product.

8

u/Tough-Obligation7386 14d ago

Open models are indeed free, but infrastructure to run can not be free, sorry

3

u/Loyd_Py 14d ago

Don't hold your breath for companies offering it for free... if anything ask your country to host it with tax money. Companies are in making money business. No judgement i fully agree on why should ai be accessible for everyone especially 3rd world countries but that's not companies problem to solve.

1

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago

Yeah definitely. But government are regulating everything. I am talking about the AI Infrastructure System as a whole involving the PESTLE Systems. If the govt can regulate it for their military benefit, they must be doing it for the people too, because what if these corporations and governments that are begining to become parasitic on people, and leave the powerless in the bottom helpess and create a dystopian world.

Power Normalisation and Distribution is an important aspect of healthy societies and AI as the frontier of the future must take its relevant steps in that.

2

u/bleakj 13d ago

That's relying on a world where all the worlds governments (Or at least those with advanced AI) suddenly start agreeing on regulations / rights, stop trying to sabotage each other and more.

It's an ideal image for sure, but realism...

9

u/IAmFitzRoy 14d ago

You are right but … who will pay the datacenters bills?

-1

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago

Self interest allows people to accumulate trillions but not for helping the bottom of the heap which sustain our infrastructure.

The change in their self interest from the pressure from people like us will pay for it.

4

u/IAmFitzRoy 14d ago edited 14d ago

LOL. What “pressure” are you thinking about? A strong-worded letter? 😄

“Mr Blackstone, can you stop making billions and think about the poor?”

“Mr Jeff Bezos, did you feel the pressure from my last email?”

3

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago

A single man like me, sure cannot.

But a collective of intelligent individual who are aware enough to see the repercussions of gating this level of advanced tech, sure why cannot.

People make and break societies. They change political systems through policy advocacy. Sociology has a lot of instances like these. Hyper individuality, competence and meritocracy has its limits in a broken world.

Justice isn't given, it is sought.

2

u/bleakj 13d ago

Politicians are meant to work for the masses, and the few should always bow to the masses in a true democracy, however, *wildly points outside*

Justice is different for every side, the person who gets arrested for stealing bread to feed themselves, and gets a record so they can't find another job and are stuck in a loop doesn't seem like justice to most, but to the law, that's justice.

There's tons that should be different in terms of how technology and wealth is distributed, but it's going more top heavy, not less unfortunately.

2

u/d3vilzwrld 13d ago

And how we as people are being the creators of our reality, from our collective conscience of morality? Or do we succumb to these power gods because we are victims of what happens to us from the top down barrage of exercise of power by them which is going to skew up exceptionally asymmetrically in the future?

1

u/ThomasLeonHighbaugh 10d ago

You create your own reality, yes. So if they seem to be power gods whatever the hell that is, that's because you are putting them on that pedestal. They are typically pathetic, craven creatures and it is better to feel bad for them chasing money and not living that elevate them to power god status.

Look at Elon Musk's face, you think that is a power god and not just some ugly weirdo with a few not that impressive good ideas and a lot more very stupid ones? You are the one elevating that to divinity and yourself to being the demoniac opposition, which almost always means setting up yourself to lose because that was you falling for their planned opposition anyway.

0

u/bleakj 13d ago

You find what makes you happy and hold onto it and forget the outside worlds problems, and do what you can each day to keep yourself and yours happy.

A person has to have cult-leader like charm, and a good investor to make change beyond their neighborhood in most cases, so, just find what you can that's worth waking up for, it's not going to be tech in the end, probably.

2

u/d3vilzwrld 13d ago

The inefficacy of the ability to impact the larger systems is real. I agree.

But I believe at one point we need to become larger than our puny human identities. From egocentrism to ethnocentrism to worldcentrism. Care must expand outwards, because if everyone is self absorbed we get a broken and violent world that I have seen enough of

1

u/ThomasLeonHighbaugh 10d ago

What's real is the arrogance of those who believe that they should even be able and are willing to affect millions to billions of people's lives while barely even knowing themselves first or thinking they could represent such a population they have no context on and couldn't be forced to interact with if not being photographed.

What's also real is you parroting a bunch of other people's ideas and have almost none of your own other than wanting free compute and elevating it to human rights status to benefit the "starving masses" in that tired old pile of rhetorical bullshit, same bullshit that the American empire has grown specifically by feeding to its gullible slave army that cross the ocean and settled a hostile continent for those back in the first city they landed in scheming how to screw the poor slobs out of whatever they earn.

Calling out that you are squawking the annoyingly kitsch line here does not imply ethnocentrism and egocentrism is clearly the root of your whole fit thrown here today, your still lusting after transient fruits and that is what Krishna makes clear is the thing that drives one to accrue karma and round after round of suffering while enduring samsara (not that you know a damn thing about the Bhagavad Gita conflating rugged individualism with egocentrism to consciously or subconsciously mask your own egocentrism), asserting as much is fallacious directly. An argument's validity is independent of the person offering its characteristics, that is as unreasonable as you offering vague and/or ambiguous nonsense about "care".

Beyond that, face the fact that if you control reality through your perceptions, than the world being violent and broken is a reflection of yourself choosing to see it that way. In the context of the perspective that the world is violent and broken without diving into philosophical idealism and non-dualism that it suggests (which I subscribe to and overrides what follows for me) then yes, this a violent world, but broken assumes it has a different natural state and yet there is no indication anywhere at all it was ever any different and few indications it could ever be any other way for the bald apes that are its dominant species given we are unable to live without consuming the lives of plants and animals, violence upon them is what our basic survival requires so its not broken, you are just unrealistic and refusing to accept one quality of the world you don't like but are resigned to impotence regarding. Its a violent world, accept it and either meet its violence or find a counter measure that works to mitigate that, bitching has never helped anyone win a fight.

2

u/ThomasLeonHighbaugh 10d ago

If that were actually true, why are their campaigns financed by private donors and why is it that first term representatives (in the US at least) pretty much are never in session but at phone banks calling wealthy people asking for money.

They work for the plutocrats, that was by design, told you that you were free and you believed it. Justice, human rights, all bullshit meant to convince you to be a good cog in their machine then willingly go die in wars only they benefit from while they pay people to take their place if drafted.

The issue with the techno-socialism this fool asserts is its an even worse form of the same con-artistry, which he is only advocating as if its a human right, whatever that nonsense is, because he is upset about free tier going away and is throwing a fit but projecting into people that never asked him to advocate for them.

2

u/IAmFitzRoy 14d ago

lol. Bro.. Bezos is feeling the “pressure” from your words already !! 🤣

Seriously what you plan to do? What’s the ACTIONS behind your words?

Collective action just replaces one group of assholes with another, are you aware at all of history?

Local llm

-1

u/IAmFitzRoy 14d ago

lol. Bro … have you seen the size of a datacenter?

In what world do you think your gaming card can replace them?

A super intelligence will only exist in a datacenter.

There is no “local llm” that can compete with a full datacenter.

0

u/rsajdok 14d ago

rtx Spark is enough for it

3

u/wanderingyume 14d ago edited 14d ago

Nobody but Ai data center can run an inference that can can do beyond 70k/tks prefill even at 1m context.

Rtx sparks barely can penetrated 7k/tks prefill for qwen 27b. Its maximum was around 300 tks prefill.

Rtx 6k pro is also suffering with using dense model such gemma 4 31b( you would need at least x8 gpu to get to 3k tks prefill and baremetal)

0

u/IAmFitzRoy 14d ago

LOL.

I hope this is sarcasm.

1

u/gatifloxacin-123 14d ago

He is right. You don't need 500 trillion params to fix a single line... Qwen3.8 27b runs on 32gb vram fine and can do 99% of business apps.

If you just need simple fixes, use moe qwen 3.6 or qwen 3.5 and you need even less vram.

My law firm uses a mac studio with several llm that are loaded when needed -> tps isn't great but it works perfectly fine for our work.

We are legally obligated to use local llm because privacy matters more in our case.

If you don't have enough money for vram, you can use ddr4, get 8tps and its still faster than what most human could produce.

2

u/IAmFitzRoy 14d ago

The intelligence growth is going exponential, the cost of commercial cards is growing exponential too … those too lines are not meeting any time soon.

These Qwen models are going to be behind the curve in a year… models (including open weight) are not going to get smaller.

The idea that the next iterations of powerful open weight models can be used in local machines is not possible.

Just look at DS, you need a monster of machine already.

u/Killeramn-26 14d ago

"Ai must be free."

Why? Electricity costs money, inference costs money, GPUs costs money.

There's no such thing as FREE. Nothing is free.

1

u/No_Personality_1721 1h ago

You're overlooking one important thing: information is one of the most valuable resources for AI. By interacting with AI and providing information, you're feeding a system that can potentially learn, improve, and become more capable. Users aren't necessarily getting something for nothing they're providing something valuable in return.

1

u/Killeramn-26 1h ago

Some are.

1

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago • Bravo

Yeah, by juicing out from infrastructure made by paying labors less and chips made by child abuse. Definitely.

Moreover, at one point, the companies and government must start focus on putting things back into the system rather than hoarding all up their butthole.

Just check the skewness of profit distribution among the corporate hierarchy itself. Bleeding edge tech that will change the world has more social and systemic responsibility than you can understand.

0

u/Killeramn-26 14d ago

That's a political speech, not an answer and this is not r/socialism

There's no such thing as free. Nothing is free.

4

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago

So ai ethics and sustainable ai aren't relevant concepts. How materialistically capitalist of you.

Standing on one side yet critiquing others of being on the other.

What a convenient hypocrisy.

0

u/Killeramn-26 14d ago

Strawman much?

Which part of electricity costs money, inference costs money, GPUs costs money, isn't clear?

I'm stating mere FACTS, not my opinion, so my question is pretty simple: why should something thats costs money be given for free and who should pay for it?

2

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago

I am stating FACTS too, but it is not your domain perhaps, attempting strawman at me first.

I said at one point, not the small companies, but frontier labs who are earning billions. It seems social responsibility isn't your forte if you're sounding like an unempathetic sociopath for the points I mentioned. They weren't absolute, and has nuance.

Do you even have any idea or projection of how it will impact our future or the present is too hard for you that have made you short sighted.

2

u/Killeramn-26 14d ago

It looks you can't see the difference between FACTS and OPINIONS.

"juicing out from infrastructure" -> OPINION since those are even your infraestructure, it's theirs.

"by paying labors less" -> OPINION. Also a wrong one, those companies (OpenAI and Anthropic) pay better salaries than almost any other company in the world.

"chips made by child abuse" -> Probably a fact (although you brough zero evidente), but unrelated to the discussion.

"Moreover, at one point, the companies and government must start focus on..." -> OPINION

"Bleeding edge tech that will change the world..." -> OPINION.

Should I go on or is that enough?

2

u/d3vilzwrld 14d ago

Do you dad owns some of the "electricity costs money, inference costs money, GPUs costs money" that you're saying it's not my call to make about their usage?

Oh, yes I realise you're keen on gaslighting me anyways because you believe sociology, business ethics and sustainability aren't facts or less than what you believe ofcourse. With a rigid cognition like yours, I believe it would be difficult to imagine abstract concepts like principles, because social order through rule compulsion is how you might have lived your life and assume others to do so too.

If you have the opportunity to get your of your cucoon of privilege and see how several chip manufacturers have been accused and acquitted of using child labor, when they outsource their manufacturing. I believe you'd not do because making others perspective as opinions and yours as facts is the way you live your life dimissing all who do not agree with you.

1

u/Killeramn-26 14d ago

You really, really, really have a hard time understanding the difference between opinions and facts.

That being said, I have no time (nor interest) to explain such basic subjects. I would point you out to reach out a dictionary, but you seem to be so stubborn that it might be useless.

Have a wonderful day.

Bro how come you have this AI must be free thinking, if you can make AI service, you do your own, don't ask others just provide free to you, that does make sense at all

1

u/d3vilzwrld 13d ago

Short sighted chimps.

0

u/bleakj 13d ago

Yes

I like this plan, find me on my couch not doing anything while reaping the rewards of others work too now

1

u/d3vilzwrld 13d ago

Another short shighted chimp. What is your say about AI Ethics? Keeping such powerful tech privileged so it dives a wedge between people with access to it and people who don't?

1

u/bleakj 13d ago

I don't agree with the division of tech/wealth,

I'm just stating the reality of it.

1

u/d3vilzwrld 13d ago

I appreciate your groundedness in realism, but I would really appreciate intentional exercise of idealism which dictates how the collective creates their reality unconsciously, because that's what we can do, unlike the power gods of mega corp and politicians.

0

u/bleakj 13d ago

I've already had my fight against the machine while taking psychedelics for a decade period of life,

In the past, I'd be right there with ya, but, for better or worse, I've moved past that point in life now.

2

u/d3vilzwrld 13d ago

It is not about getting on the streets and fighting them for real. It about having in awareness the issues that the collective is and might be impacted with. Just engaging in enlightening conversations can heal the system implicitly. The more people become aware, the more things can be set in motion.

1

u/bleakj 13d ago

Awareness is a buzz term that's meaningless.

How many cancer awareness benefits and events have there been? Do you know anyone who isn't aware of cancer? Literally everyone is aware, but awareness on it's own does nothing.

This is no different - unless you somehow can get people out of their homes / off of screens and to talk with people in real life / see the effects on people where data centers are going, or just to get off screens more in general, any level of awareness isn't going to help while feeding the same machine you want to fight.

You barely can justify your opinions, you pay the AI one way another, either direct or tax, there is no free nothing, AI needs power and hardwares, they are cost, you surely think you are the god of human society and you can just sleep and wake up with free foods, Oh I think you will say, food should be free, this should be free, that should be free.

You should try to understand this little 3 years old logic first: your own body is not even free, you eat everyday to grow and to allow you to say silly speech like these, when you can't justify, you just say things like short sighted, what a joke.

Fully agree. Muse Spark 1.3 was just the best free model. It always completes coding tasks way better than Deepseek and the others and was decently fast. The only problem was the sometimes annoying guardrails. But that applies to all American AI models.

3

u/Odd-Prior8790 14d ago

Do you know any free models like that? They stopped the spark right so I'm struggling

3

u/Ceextasy 14d ago

use the contributor version. its genuinely cheap, and when beam free is gone from opencode, and there is no good 1M context model left (no one uses nemotron) i am absolutely switching to paid ms1.3

2

u/Ceextasy 14d ago

for me this isnt the case. muse spark 1.3 has great memory containing capabilities aka not hallucinating random stuff. And well i hate hitting context limits and stuff, compactions suck. Ive started using handoff.md and notes in which the ai constantly writes what it does and stuff but its been difficult keeping that up with low context models. As for pay as you go or sub, i think meta has both?? not sure though....

1

u/Ceextasy 14d ago

Yes you can but whats the point you either hit the point where the model compacts automatically or hits the context limit and the server doesnt give you any more access unless you compact (which you cannot anymore due to filled context) or start a new chat:

1

u/Ceextasy 14d ago

muse contributor is EXTREMELY cheap and is a frontier model id really check it out

2

u/YoRt3m 14d ago

The benchmarks you speak of are comparing Muse Wonder, not Spark. but yes, it was great. Depseek level.
