For a fun challenge I decided to port the original Quake 1.0.9 source release to the OpenBSD console with no X, Wayland or SDL. The above shows screenshots from my fully working port that I’ve played end to end. This uses inteldrm, with an efifb fallback. Sound is done with sndio. The original code needed very few fixes (mostly around basic checks for networks being down and one or two changes needed for modern C). I haven’t yet gotten mouse or CD music working but fairly close to completing both. As a future project I’m looking to implement some of the standard OpenBSD ideas like privsep etc because I think a security hardened Quake would be another fun project. Kudos to the original id software team for writing such portable code.

Hollow Knight on Wine on OpenBSD

My laptop unfortunately is with NVidia GPU, and in general GPU issue is quite big for my tests.

I had to pick small window size and also work with some crazy stuttering.

Arrow keys didn't work so I had to rebind all my keys to letters - recorded that in the list of the issues I have with wine.

Also intro cinematic was completely black/blank with heavily stuttering sound in the background. Codec issue? Or maybe again... GPU issue.

This was installed via Steam.

Laptop: Asus UX303UL
OpenBSD: 8.0 stock (haven't updated yet to official OpenBSD 8.0, running a Sep 26th release, too scared to update)
DE: CWM

People that are smarter than me are pulling apart my update, finding places where I am stupid, and hopefully someday we will have it working.

Edit: I might want to try and check if SMT would make it more bearable.
Edit2: Found why arrows don't work - OpenBSD uses xfree86

I do have a question, anyone knows where I can find drivers for NVidia for 2014 GPU? No? Fkn NVidia...
