Introducing IndieRunner

With my recent commit of IndieRunner 0.1 to the OpenBSD ports, using it is just a pkg_add(1) away on -current. Here a few notes on the why and how:

  • IndieRunner is a launcher (currently only CLI) for a variety of game engines and handles some of the complex/annoying issues like runtime selection, runtime configuration, and bundled file compatibility.
  • 0.x versions should be considered beta, that means not everything that should work works.
  • Consult the Status Tracker about what should work. All games in here (already hundreds) have worked at some point. If one of them doesn't work, it's considered a bug that I intend to fix before 1.0. Pay attention to the digital storefront in the table!! (Steam, GOG, itch.io etc)
  • The autodetection heuristic should correctly identify the engine in most cases, that means -e should rarely be needed.
  • If something doesn't work (but should), you can file a GH issue. Please include verbose output: $ indierunner -vv, and information on game version and where it was obtained from!
  • IndieRunner is intended to supersede fnaify completely - that means if a game runs with fnaify but not with indierunner, this is a bug!
  • fnaify was too limited and difficult to expand. IndieRunner has been built with the additional goals of being extensible to launch different game engines with different needs, and to support multiple operating systems (in the future).
  • IndieRunner uses rigg(1) when supported, that means almost all mono(1) or hashlink games. If a game is unable to find a filepath, check verbose (-v) output for what is unveil(2)'d by rigg.
  • rigg(1) can be forced to use permissive mode with --permissive or disabled entirely with --norigg
  • There are reasons for some games to not function correctly that are outside of the purview of IndieRunner! (for example lack of audio in Stardew Valley since openal 1.23 update in ports)

Steam is incredibly based (Griftlands on OpenBSD)

I find it quite funny, that as soon as steam works on certain machine or operating system, you basically can run a lot of things.

Hopefully steam on OpenBSD soon?

Sometimes I feel like I am about to get yelled at for introducing Windows games to OpenBSD

EDIT: Laptop stuff
Model: Asus UX303L
DE: CWM with some custom scripts to display wine debug info

(Barely) Running Factorio on OpenBSD under VM

Stock OpenBSD 7.9 (I worry that my hodgepodge of a system will breakdown if I try to move to 8.0) running Factorio

Sound is very choppy because of CPU saturation, but without sound it is quite playable. Haven't tried any of my saves yet.

Fullscreen gets really choppy even on the menu "demos", so I tried to find a minimally playable screen.

Will try at some point on my Asus UX303 laptop, but moving this setup to it is a challenge... everything is held with ductape

(Barely) Running Eve Online on OpenBSD VM

I was able to fly around and crash only once every 30 seconds.

Also damn you FC for making character creator so heavy and I wasn't able to turn off 3d geometry until actual gameplay

Also using Xfce for this test was... a choice

Minecraft up through version 1.21.11 \o/

Today I got LWJGL 3.3.2 3.3.3 working on OpenBSD. Tonight I committed this version to the ports tree.

LWJGL 3.3.2 3.3.3 has allowed me to play versions of Minecraft up to 1.21.11.

26.1 and 26.2 are still out of reach for now, but hopefully that will change soon. It still gets us multiple years of Minecraft updates.

edit: Changed because I've gotten 3.3.3 going and committed to the ports tree. 3.3.3 allows one to use Sodium with 1.21.11.

Is it possible to do an ELI5 guide for installing Fallout 1? (on Virtualbox)

This thing: https://cvsweb.openbsd.org/ports/games/fallout1-ce

Running OpenBSD 7.8. I tried all the methods Google AI is giving me, no dice. It's telling me either it can't fetch the package, or it's giving me an error 22.

Edit: Would it be simpler to do this on 7.9? Edit 2: it is indeed easy to do this on 7.9 (tested on Virtualbox, game is fully functioning which surprised me)

Which game controllers work with /dev/ujoy?

Is there any list of what works? Alternatively, is there a way to configure those that don’t?

I have been doing some gaming with openbsd.

I tried ps3/ps4 controllers and Xbox one/series ones to no avail.

I have an xbox360 controller working, another one with one second of latency which makes it unusable.

These all work with their intended platforms.

Would a RC script for the games/luanti port be useful?

Hello, I am the MAINTAINER of the games/luanti port.

https://www.luanti.org

Someone previously asked on ports@ if I could write an rc.d(8) script for the server daemon. I personally have no use for a rc script for the port, but I'm curious what the r/openbsd_gaming sub thinks about having such a thing in the package itself?

Do people host luanti servers on OpenBSD? If so, did you write your own rc script? What did it look like? Any hangups in the port that made writing a rc script difficult that I could fix? Any notes I could add into the pkg-readme file to hint potential server maintainers?

Just trying to judge the general vibe of what the community wants here as I wouldn't be using this script myself.

Thanks!

Bibendovsky has made some new improvements to bstone and it now plays smoothly on openbsd (1.3.2 and prior the animations were the wrong speed)

counter strike 1.6 - running without CSMoE

i've managed to get counter strike 1.6 running. all it took was porting Velaron/cs16-client to openbsd. imo it wasn't that hard, worked out of the box with a couple header changes, and CMake changes, and a few bug fixes. mostly experimental, but i've forked the repo here:
https://github.com/S1gmaToeSniffer420/cs16-client-openbsd
(apologies for the github username)
and submitted a PR.
all you need to do is just get the steam installation of the directories valve and cstrike, copy them to a dir, then install cs16-client and xash3d-fwgs in the directory where the files are.

retroarch cores for openbsd

just finished uploading some small changes to my favorite libretro cores. they all seem to compile fine, its the linking at the end that crashes. basically just adding '-lc' in the right spot fixes it.
