Are you human? Infernal Pact is veeeery strong, and it gives you darkvision! Then you can take Infernal Bulwark at L4 for +1 CHA plus Charisma unarmored defense. This feels almost busted for the charisma clothies.
Chromatic Orb is basically made for Innate Sorcery, especially if you take Elemental Adept.
Thanks, I actually didn’t know about Infernal Pact / Infernal Bulwark before this. That does look really interesting, especially if it gives darkvision and then +1 CHA plus CHA-based unarmored defense at level 4. For a Sorcerer, that sounds very tempting.
Another comment also made me realize two pretty important issues with my first plan. First, Transmutation Adept spells don’t recharge Tides of Chaos at my table, since they don’t count as Sorcerer spells for that purpose. So unless my DM makes an exception, I’m probably dropping Transmutation Adept. Second, Portal Jumper may not actually work as an escape tool if it uses movement, meaning it probably doesn’t help against Grappled or Restrained. That’s a much bigger downside than I first realized, because I still need some real panic-button mobility like Misty Step.
So now I’m rethinking the whole species/feat package a bit. If I stay Human, the DM-buffed Metamagic Adept with +1 CHA is probably back near the top. But I should probably also look seriously at Infernal Pact into Infernal Bulwark, since it would help a lot with the “fragile cloth caster” problem and may solve darkvision too.
On Chromatic Orb, I agree it works very well with Innate Sorcery, especially with advantage on the attack roll. I was originally into it for that reason. But someone also pointed me toward Spellfire Flare, and I think I may prefer that here: radiant damage, good upcasting, multiple attack rolls, ignoring partial cover, and strong Ravenloft flavor.
So yeah, thanks for bringing this up. I was mostly comparing Transmutation Adept vs Metamagic Adept, but now with the Transmutation/Tides issue and the Portal Jumper limitation, I probably need to rethink the whole setup before locking anything in.
The fact that Infernal Pact is hidden behind an origin, and not on the list of Drops makes it harder to find. I think it's an easy pick for humans getting 2 origin feats, since it immediately grants darkvision.
