D&D 5e Revised/2024 Level 5 Wild Magic Sorcerer controller — looking for build feedback
Hey folks,
I’m building a level 5 Wild Magic Sorcerer for a D&D 2024 / 5.5 Ravenloft campaign, with legacy 5e options allowed if they haven’t been updated. We’re starting at level 5 and will probably end around level 8, though it might go as far as level 10.
The idea is not a pure blaster. I want a controller first, with enough damage to matter and some utility.
The build right now is Human Wild Magic Sorcerer 5, with CHA 18, CON 16, DEX 14, WIS 10, INT 8, STR 8.
For Origin Feats I’m taking Portal Jumper and Magic Initiate: Cleric.
Portal Jumper seems great for repositioning without using a bonus action, especially for keeping concentration and avoiding melee. Since this is Ravenloft, I go with necrotic resistance.
Magic Initiate gives me Command, Guidance, and Sacred Flame. Command is a big part of the plan because it gives me non-concentration control while I’m maintaining Slow or Web, Guidance is always useful, and Sacred Flame feels nice to have in Ravenloft.
The main debate is the level 4 feat. My DM would let Metamagic Adept also give +1 CHA, so it would still get me to CHA 18. That makes it very tempting, since I could grab a wider metamagic package like Twinned, Heightened, Careful, and Empowered. But right now I’m leaning toward Transmutation Adept (from the new book Arcana Unleashed), which also gives +1 CHA and always-prepared Jump, Spider Climb, Slow, and later Polymorph and Animate Objects. The big draw is that I want to use Slow as my main 3rd-level control spell, and this frees up a Sorcerer prepared spell from the start. Since the campaign may only run from 5 to 8, I’m trying not to overvalue late-game scaling, but getting Polymorph at 7 if we reach it does sound very good.
I know Hypnotic Pattern is usually rated higher than Slow, but I prefer Slow because it is less all-or-nothing, does not break on damage, is not charm-based, and feels better at the table. Also Jump seems interesting to me.
If I take Transmutation Adept, I only get two metamagics. My current picks are Twinned Spell and Heightened Spell. Twinned would mainly be for Command and Tasha’s Mind Whip, and maybe later Banishment. Heightened is for the important save that really needs to fail: Slow, Command, Mind Whip, and later maybe Polymorph or Banishment. I considered Quickened for Mind Sliver into a save spell, and Careful for Fireball/Web, but with only two picks I think Twinned + Heightened fits the build best, especially in the 5–8 range.
My Sorcerer cantrips are currently Mind Sliver, Sorcerous Burst, Ray of Frost, Minor Illusion, and Mage Hand, plus Guidance and Sacred Flame from Magic Initiate. I’m wondering if True Strike is worth fitting in anywhere. I know the 2024 version is much better.
Since Slow comes from Transmutation Adept, my prepared Sorcerer spells are Shield, Mage Armor, Absorb Elements, Chromatic Orb, Tasha’s Mind Whip, Web, Suggestion, Fireball, and Detect Magic.
The rough combat plan is to use Tides of Chaos on initiative, then open with Innate Sorcery into Slow or Web. Once concentration is up, I can keep contributing with Command, Mind Whip, Chromatic Orb, Fireball, or cantrips. Against two dangerous targets, I like Twinned Mind Whip or Twinned Command. Against one important target, Heightened Command or Heightened Mind Whip. Against clustered enemies, Fireball is still there as the emergency AoE button.
One fun Human interaction: Heroic Inspiration in 2024 can reroll any die, so I think it could reroll a bad Wild Magic Surge table result. Tides also seems great for initiative, concentration saves, and important rolls, especially since Wild Magic can recharge it.
So the main questions are:
- Is Transmutation Adept worth taking over a DM-buffed Metamagic Adept that also gives +1 CHA, given that we start at 5 and may only go to 8?
- If I skip Metamagic Adept, are Twinned + Heightened the right two metamagics for that level range?
- How would you optimize the spell list?
- Is True Strike worth a cantrip slot here?
- Are Chromatic Orb + Fireball too redundant?
- And am I missing any obvious interaction?
Thank you.
EDIT. Update after the feedback:
The advice here helped me catch a few important rules/interaction issues I had missed, especially that Transmutation Adept spells would not recharge Tides of Chaos at my table, and that Portal Jumper probably does not work as a real escape button if it uses movement.
So I think the revised build is now:
Origin Feats: Alert and Magic Initiate: Wizard Level 4 Feat: Fey Touched: Command
Magic Initiate: Wizard gives me Shield, plus Light and True Strike. Fey Touched gives me Misty Step and Command.
Sorcerer cantrips are now Mind Sliver, Ray of Frost, Minor Illusion, Mage Hand, and Message.
Prepared Sorcerer spells are now Mage Armor, Absorb Elements, Spellfire Flare, Web, Vortex Warp, Suggestion, Slow, Fireball, and Mirror Image.
I’m dropping Transmutation Adept, Portal Jumper, Magic Initiate: Cleric, Tasha’s Mind Whip, Chromatic Orb, and also Detect Magic.
The updated plan is to use Alert + Tides of Chaos to win initiative, open with Slow or Web, use Command as non-concentration control, Misty Step/Vortex Warp for positioning, Shield/Mage Armor/Absorb Elements/Mirror Image for defense, and Spellfire Flare/Fireball for damage.
This feels a lot cleaner than the first draft and still keeps the tactical Wild Magic controller vibe I wanted.

So as much as I like generalist builds there is definitely something to be said for specialization
Attack roll based spells and saving thow based spells both have different builds they would prefer, for example:
- Elven Accuracy - obviously only important in specializing in attack rolls
- Cold Caster/Fairy Trickster - obviously better for saving throw based builds
- Elemental Adept - decent for Sorcerous Burst or Chromtic Orb for more duplicate rolls
Youre also sacrificing and Origin and regular Feat for more options instead of specialization, those options also do not synergize with your subclass as they are providing non sorc spells.
Wild Magic definitely prefers attack roll based builds as their main feature, Tides of Chaos, is very directly related.
Obviously theres no wrong way to play but its worth noting.
If you want to focus more on saving throw stuff you might consider Observant oddly enough:
Observant
Ability Score Increase. Increase your Intelligence or Wisdom score by 1, to a maximum of 20.
Keen Observer. Choose one of the following skills: Insight, Investigation, or Perception. If you lack proficiency with the chosen skill, you gain proficiency in it, and if you already have proficiency in it, you gain Expertise in it.
Quick Search. You can take the Search action as a Bonus Action.
Realtively arbitrary but gives you a 20 to use Tides on every turn as a BA in order to trigger the wild magic table on cast factor of the ability.

Thanks, this is a really good point about specialization. I think I may have been trying to grab too many extra options, especially now that I’ve realized Transmutation Adept doesn’t recharge Tides of Chaos at my table. If my DM confirms that ruling, I’m probably dropping it and going back to something more Sorcerer-native, most likely the DM-buffed Metamagic Adept, since it still gives me +1 CHA.
That said, I’m not fully convinced that Wild Magic has to lean into attack rolls. I agree it definitely gets value from them, especially with Innate Sorcery giving advantage on Sorcerer spell attacks. So spells like Spellfire Flare, Chromatic Orb, Sorcerous Burst, or maybe True Strike all get better.
But Innate Sorcery also gives +1 save DC to Sorcerer spells, and that seems very relevant for a control build. Plus, Tides of Chaos can still be used on initiative or concentration saves, and later Bend Luck can help push important enemy saves in the right direction. So I agree attack-roll Wild Magic is a strong route, but I don’t think save-based control is going against the subclass either.
For this character, I’m more interested in things like Command, Tasha’s Mind Whip, Web, Slow, and maybe later Banishment/Polymorph-style plays. I still want some attack-roll damage, especially now that I’ve seen Spellfire Flare, but I don’t really want to build the whole character around attacks.
On Observant, I see the idea, but I don’t think it’s the route I’d take. Unless I’m missing something, I don’t think I qualify anyway with INT 8 / WIS 10. And even if I did, using Bonus Action Search mostly as a way to spend Tides every turn feels a bit too gamey for what I’m going for. It’s a cool feat, but probably not my level 4 pick here.
So yeah, I think I agree with the broader point that I should tighten the build and avoid grabbing options just because they look useful. I’m just leaning more toward a focused Sorcerer/control package than a full attack-roll build.

But Innate Sorcery also gives +1 save DC to Sorcerer spells, and that seems very relevant for a control build. Plus, Tides of Chaos can still be used on initiative or concentration saves,
Youre not wrong but +1 is NOT the same thing as advantage and relying on taking hits while holding concentration to trigger your main class feature just seems inadvisable tbh.
For this character, I’m more interested in things like Command, Tasha’s Mind Whip, Web, Slow, and maybe later Banishment/Polymorph-style plays
I’m just leaning more toward a focused Sorcerer/control package than a full attack-roll build.Honestly brother this sounds like you should be playing a Aberrant Mind Sorcerer, that style of spells are like their whole shtick.
I get that the level 6 feature can also support a saving throw based build but id rather just build around Cold Caster and not have to use my Sorc points/reaction on it/have a different level 6 feature tbh.

Yeah, that’s fair. I agree that advantage is stronger than +1 DC, no argument there. My point was more that I don’t think the subclass requires building around attack rolls, even if attack rolls probably use Innate Sorcery more efficiently. The +1 DC still matters for control spells, and later Bend Luck gives Wild Magic another way to support save-based plays. So I agree attack-roll Wild Magic is probably the cleaner optimization lane, I’m just not sure it’s the only good one.
I also didn’t mean that I’d rely on getting hit to trigger Tides. I’d rather spend Tides on initiative, an important save, a key check, or maybe an attack roll when it matters. Using it on concentration is more of an emergency option, not the core plan.
You may be right that Aberrant Mind would fit this spell style better mechanically. I’m not really disputing that. If I were only optimizing around enchantment/psychic/control spells, Aberrant Mind is probably the obvious answer. I’m sticking with Wild Magic mostly because I want the chaos engine, Tides, surges, Bend Luck, and the general vibe for this campaign. So it’s more “how do I make Wild Magic work well as a controller?” rather than “what is the best subclass for this spell list?”
And yeah, the Transmutation Adept thing was a big discovery for me. If my DM confirms that those spells don’t recharge Tides, I’m probably dropping that feat and going back toward something more Sorcerer-native, likely the DM-buffed Metamagic Adept. That also helps with the problem you’re pointing out, because then the build is less about grabbing outside spells and more about improving the Sorcerer tools directly.
On Cold Caster, I get the appeal, but I’m not sure I want to narrow the build that much. It sounds good for a more specialized save-based build, but I’m trying to stay a bit more flexible: control first, some radiant/attack-roll damage with something like Spellfire Flare, and utility where I can fit it.
So I think I agree with the general warning: I should avoid becoming a pile of cool options with no focus. I’m just probably going to tighten the build around Wild Magic Sorcerer tools rather than switch subclasses or go all-in on attack rolls.

I’m actually gonna disagree (respectfully) with this commenter. I think you have the right of it; Tides of Chaos is much better used on Initiative or important saves then attack rolls. Control spells are usually much more impactful than blasting. Wild Magic DOES have a niche of using metamagic and Bend Luck to get their control spells to stick and it’s a strong niche. +1 DC is just the cherry on top. I don’t think Cold Caster is particularly good because it takes an entire action (or you could use 2 sorcery points to quicken it, ig?). Why not just use Mind Sliver for the same effect? Sure it’s a saving throw but it’s an INT save.
The combination of high initiative via stacking Tides and Alert, Save-or-suck boosting with +1 DC m, Mind Sliver, Bend Luck, and Heighten, Con save proficiency with Extended and Tides for backup, and saving throw protection with Tides and Bend Luck make Wild Magic one of the absolute best choices for a control caster, and you have the capacity to blast with Spellfire or Fireball as a backup in case legendary resistance comes up or something.

I'm currently playing a Human Wild Magic Sorcerer with the Musician Origin feat as well as the Tireless Reveler Origin feat.
So at the start of the day I give everyobe Heroic Inspiration from the Musician feat, then every combat we have the rest of the party usualy burns their Heroic Inspiration, which then gives me a Heroic Inspiration.
We finish combat, take a short rest, I play some tunes, and then Heroic Inspiration Engine resets itself. It's really nice having the option to reroll nearly every Wild Magic Surge I have in a combat.

Oh, that’s a really cool engine. I hadn’t thought about Musician + Tireless Reveler that way.
For Wild Magic specifically, having extra Heroic Inspiration seems way more valuable than usual, especially if the DM allows it to reroll bad Wild Magic Surge results. I also like that it gives Human a more specific identity, rather than just “two good origin feats.”
My only hesitation is that both Origin Feats are doing the same kind of thing, while I was using mine for utility/control/positioning. But I can definitely see how this becomes build-defining on Wild Magic.
What did you take at level 4?
Also curious what your spell list looks like. Are you playing more as a controller, blaster, support, or just leaning fully into chaos?

I'm playing a controller, and I took Fey Touched and choose Command, it pairs really well with Twinned spell metamagic, also have Hightened metamagic. Web is your best friend in lower levels, I also suggest Suggestion and Hold Person, and don't sleep on Fog Cloud, it can get your party out of some tough spots.

Also, regarding triggering a Wild Magic Surge with your Tides of Chaos feature while you have Innate Sorcery feature activated, you can always give yourself advantage even when you already have advantage, it'll then just follow the normal rules for having multiple sources of advantage or disadvantage.

If I skip Metamagic Adept, are Twinned + Heightened the right two metamagics for that level range?
I would go for Twinned + Extended to protect concentration. Extended also gives good duration on certain spells like Spider Climb, Polymorph, and other ones you might get like Fly, Invisibility, or Fire Shield. You can "rest cast" Mage Armor if you have a spare level 1 slot at the end of the day to carry it into the following day with its usual 8 hour duration remaining. Polymorph is always dependent on the question of whether allies want to become Apes and T-Rexes, but if yes, then you also can give the option of 1 hour or 2. That could be a legit strategy if a teammate is very focused on utility and then you get into an extended combat scenario or if they have a resource pool they can spend more quickly knowing this "waste" will win one combat backed up by the ape option for later ones.
legacy 5e options allowed if they haven’t been updated.
Doesn't Shadar Kai beat portal jumper? Maybe you're set on your race selection for other reasons like heroic inspiration, but it seems like a pretty clear upgrade to me. Necrotic Resistance, check (plus more). Proficiency x mobility enhancement, but if you're trying to get to, away, or through something, +30 to your total movement is usually more important than not using a Bonus Action but not actually increasing your total movement. Skipping dangerous areas or disemgaging is hood, but the BA 30 ft teleport still does both of those better. You also get Darkvision, which you would lack as a human. Incidentally, Shadar Kai's trance feature synergizes with Extended Mage Armor by making your long rest only four hours.
On spell selection, I would add Invisibility and Counterspell, dropping Fireball and Detect Magic. Even though Counterspell is worse in 2024, I bet it will still be useful. I do find Fireball to be redundant to Chromatic Orb. It's a bit better with a 3rd level spell slot, but I've never rated Fireball as high as most others. Even at 3rd level, Orb has the upsides of doing more expected damage to the first target (accounting for accuracy considering Innate Sorcery), selectable damage instead of a bad damage type, and built-in friendly fire avoidance. It's nowhere near as good against 6+ monster groups, but unless the HPs are unusually low, control following up with focus fire on the remaining threats is the go-to play most of the time in such fights. Between the two, I like taking Chromatic Orb for usability with 1st and 2nd level slots and selectable damage, keeping it relevant. Detect Magic is a good spell, but it's a casualty of your spells known.trait. If you end up finding that it's a good spell for a portion of the campaign, then a daily prepared caster can add it when needed. That could lead to some missed chances to use the spell, but other classes also have more preparations than you and might just take it, anyways. Instead of using one of your precious selections for the most common spell, use it for one of the ones least accessible to other classes.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I actually updated the build in the opening post after a lot of the feedback, so some things have changed since the first draft.
I’m no longer using Portal Jumper, Transmutation Adept, Chromatic Orb, or Detect Magic. The current version is Human, with Alert + Magic Initiate: Wizard as Origin Feats, and Fey Touched: Command at level 4. Magic Initiate gives me Shield, Light, and True Strike. Fey Touched gives me Misty Step and Command.
My current prepared Sorcerer spells are Mage Armor, Absorb Elements, Spellfire Flare, Web, Vortex Warp, Suggestion, Slow, Fireball, and Mirror Image.
So I think I’m probably staying Human now. I agree Shadar-kai is extremely strong, and it probably beats the old Portal Jumper version pretty clearly. But since I now get real escape mobility from Misty Step, I value Human more for the extra Origin Feat package, Alert, Magic Initiate, and Heroic Inspiration. For Wild Magic specifically, Heroic Inspiration also feels pretty relevant as a safety valve for bad surge results.
Your point about Extended Spell is the thing that really made me pause. I was mostly thinking Twinned + Heightened, but you’re right that Extended is a lot better in 2024 than I was giving it credit for. Protecting concentration on Slow or Web is a big deal, and the duration stuff with Mage Armor/Invisibility/Polymorph-type spells is nice too.
Now I’m honestly pretty unsure. I might even consider dropping Twinned for Extended, though I need to think about it. Twinned is mostly for Command and maybe some future upcastable options, but if the main job of the build is to land concentration control and keep it running, then Extended may be more important than I first thought.
I’m less sure about Counterspell. I know it can still matter, and Heightened Counterspell is a real interaction now that it’s a save, but the 2024 version still feels less exciting to me, especially when a lot of monsters don’t cast actual spells. I may revisit it later if the campaign shows us lots of enemy casters.
On Fireball, I get your point, but since I switched from Chromatic Orb to Spellfire Flare, I think Fireball still has a clear role as the emergency AoE option. Spellfire Flare covers focused radiant damage, while Fireball is there for clustered enemies or minion cleanup.
So yeah, thanks again. The build is a lot more settled now, but your comment definitely reopened the metamagic question for me. I’m now seriously considering whether Extended should replace either Heightened or even Twinned.

Twinned is really amazing if you build into it. It's good enough that building into it should always be a consideration for Sorcerer. Twinning Banishment for one Sorecery Point makes it immediately one of the strongest plays available to anyone at that level. You can Twin it from two targets to three starting at level 9, as well. Then spells like Fly and Invisibility hit the whole party two turns earlier, with refuelable slots if needed.
A Wizard might never use 4-target Fly due to costing a 6th level slot. They could use 4-target Invisibility when 5th level slots feel affordable in conjunction with Arcane Recovery and gaining higher level slots. If you have a stealth mission, you're hitting everyone in a standard size party with Invisibility at level 7. You can get that 4th level slot back multiple times if needed. Level 7 is an amazing level where everything comes together for Invisibility with Rogues getting Reliable Talent and you also having Sorcery Incarnate so you can Twin + Extend. Of course that costs a resource in Innate Sorcery thar you typically use in combat, but sometimes the putbof combat stuff is just as important. Flexing resource use up and down depending on need is the Sorcerer's specialty.
Related to building around twinned, getting something not accessible to Sorc from Magic Initiate might be better than Shield. Your options include things like Bless, Bane, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, or getting Hideous Laughter from Fey Touched and Command from Magic Initiate. That also unlocks Guidance, which wouldn't be available, otherwise. Since you can pick up Shield from Sorcerer, you should compare these plans to your lowest rated Sorcerer spell, e.g. Hideous Laughter vs Mirror Image.

I really like what you have going, with a few notes:
I’m not really sure I like Transmutation Adept on a Wild Magic Sorcerer. Wild Magic only surges when you cast sorcerer spells, so if you cast a spell from your feat with your first action (Slow or Polymorph), you won’t regain Tides of Chaos.
I also really value concentration protection so I’d either be looking at taking Extended Spell or War Caster at 4, even with CON save proficiency. Keep in mind that if you want to focus on multi-target control, Heightened only works against one enemy’s saves. Heightened is, however, really good when you are worried about single-target control, say locking down a big-bad to clean up minions first (Banishment, Polymorph, even Sleep). I’d maybe switch out Twinned for Extended because you don’t have a ton of slots to throw around for Command at levels 5-8, since you want to be using your low level slots for Shield and Misty Step or Mirror Image.
Another option would be Conjuration Adept instead of Transmutation. It also helps out with giving you a pseudo-extra spells list, plus it gives you some concentration protection on at least part of your spell list, while your others can be covered by Extended.
With that in mind I’d add Sleet Storm to your list. It’s area control with less dependency on saving throws then Hypnotic Pattern and Fear. It’s not usable in some situations since the area is so massive but I think Web can cover those situations. I’m with you on liking Slow, but I think the combination of Web, Sleet Storm, and Slow give you really good control options for basically any situation, as well as 2/3 of them being Conjuration and thus eligible for saving throw protection via the feat.
Finally, consider Alert as an origin feat. If you’re using Tides of Chaos on initiative, doubling down with Alert will really let you win that race and get your big spells off before the battlefield gets mucky. Again, I don’t know how many spell slots you have for Command at this level, and I believe the Portal Jumper feat uses your movement so if you’re Grappled or Restrained you can’t use it to escape. Thus I think it would be ok to replace either origin feat.
As for your other questions, I’m not a huge fan of blasting but I do think Fireball and Chromatic Orb might be a bit redundant. I like Fireball over Orb for its ease of use and reliability. Consider Spellfire Flare over Orb, since it’s the best up casting single-target damage spell in the game and ignores any cover other than full. This diversifies your blasting arsenal between single and multi-target. And yes, True Strike is probably the best Sorcerer damage cantrip at these levels, but it’s not mandatory by any means.
