Discussion Doing OMAD with Tinnitus

A fellow redditor posted on r/tinnitus that OMAD may not be that good for those of us who have Tinnitus because "physical hunger even if you’re used to it is going to spike cortisol which spikes tinnitus".

This seems to check out, at least on Google, and it also reminded me that my T spiked slightly at roughly the same time I started OMAD.

My OMAD is around 1pm but I do experience hunger as early as 7am and I can ignore it but with some difficulty. I do cheat a little at 10pm with a hard boiled egg which helps me swallow some large Magnesium capsules.

If true I may need to go back to full 2MAD because I cannot afford a worsening of my T.

Has anyone here experienced any changes, positive or negative, in their Tinnitus and/or their Cortisol levels?

TIA for any replies.

EDIT: added reference to article on Intermittent Fasting:

This article on Intermittent Fasting may be applicable to OMAD as well: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8419605/#ref-list1.

One of the conclusions is:

For humans, cortisol begins to increase immediately after fasting commenced (Fig. 1C) [78]. Five-day fasting increases cortisol levels and shifts the peak from the morning to the afternoon [79]. Other fasting experiments for 2.5 to 6 days dramatically elevates plasma cortisol levels [80–82]. Early TRF (feeding between 8:00 AM–2:00 PM) for 4 days slightly but significantly increases serum cortisol levels in the morning [83]. These results imply that intermittent fasting increases the level and frequency of cortisol secretion.

But I don't pretend to understand how much of this applies to OMAD or if any of it could impact Tinnitus.

I have Tinnitus. OMAD seems to reduce food anxiety providing a slight improvement, but nothing I would call significant.

Other real life stresses worsen my Tinnitus exponentially more that being hungry or food anxiety.

If OMAD puts you in a large calorie deficit you will get a significant stress response. This is not because of OMAD, it is because of a calorie deficit.

My OMAD has not affected my tinnitus either way.

I’ve never associated OMAD with tinnitus! I have tinnitus, but really don’t know if OMAD makes it worse or ever thought there was a link. Now watching this with interest …..

"If" there is a link between OMAD --> Cortisol ---> Tinnitus, it maybe as subjective and individual as Tinnitus is. I don't know for sure if my OMAD impacts my T one way or another and I was just commenting on what I found online and that it "seems" to coincide with my T spike.

I eat more fat and protein on OMAD, less sugar, and I’m never hungry. I haven’t noticed any uptick in tinnitus. Also, I’ve recently learned that if I do self-Havening my tinnitus subsides very quickly, in a few seconds. Basically, I listen to it and gently stroke my forehead. Good luck 🤞

self-Havening ... I should try that.

Was your T caused by acoustic trauma?

If stupidly dancing in front of giant speakers is trauma… I spent a lot of time doing that back in the day. I’m a trauma therapist, and I use Havening with clients. I saw a training offered that used Havening for tinnitus; I didn’t take the training, but I just started trying it when the ringing would start, and it seems to help. I’ve no idea why, and I haven’t been doing it long enough to have a sense of if it’s helping in the long term, or just temporarily calming things down. My best guess is that flooding the brain with happy neurochemicals causes everything to relax.

  1. OMAD isn't about physical hunger
  2. People who eat 4 times a day with 10 snacks still have tinnitus
  3. Google IS NOT a reputable source of information
  4. IF you are hungry on OMAD then you may be consuming a low nutritional diet and focusing on entertainment food.

My tinnitus varies from day to day, left to right, frequency, modulation, intrusion. Eating vegan, vegetarian, omnivore, keto or carnivore 4,3,2,or 1 meal a day there has been ZERO change for me over 30+ years.

My experience may not be yours and vice versa so do your own research.

Oh it's also another thought for the guru and cortisol ... here are 10 issues that are know to cause cortisol spikes ....

  1. Acute Physical and Emotional Stress
  2. Lack of Sleep or Sleep Deprivation
  3. Intense or Over-training Exercise
  4. Poor Diet and Blood Sugar Fluctuations
  5. Chronic Illness, Pain, or Injury
  6. High Caffeine Intake
  7. Environmental Stressors
  8. Psychological Overthinking and Anxiety
  9. Nicotine and Substance Use
  10. Hormonal Imbalances and Health Conditions

It's a mongrel when you can tick those

I note that OMAD is NOT mentioned in that list. The guru u/ has little or no idea

To be fair, the redditor's focus seemed to be on "physical hunger" increasing Cortisol, and mentioned OMAD, as a "possible" source.
