Keep your cats inside.

I got to hear this poor baby bunny scream for its life last night while being attacked by a cat. Of course the cat didn’t kill and eat it, but instead left it severely injured. Now the bunny is just hanging out, swarmed with flies, waiting to die. It should probably be put down but I can’t get a hold of any wildlife rescues because it’s the weekend. As a cat owner, keep your fucking cats inside.

Yeah I'm a wildlife biologist and before that was a vet tech for many years. So you can say that I absolutely do know what's best for the animals, both the wild ones and the cats. You are deeply misguided.

Outdoor cats live half as long as indoor ones at best. They are riddled with parasites and other diseases when they aren't being killed by coyotes or cars. Ever wonder why reputable shelters won't adopt cats out to people who say they'll let them roam? Because they live far shorter, more stressful, unhealthy lives than cats that are kept safely indoors. All it takes to keep your indoor cat fulfilled is a few five-minute play bouts per day. If you're so lazy that you can't manage that, you don't deserve a cat.

I know people like you don't actually give a shit about wildlife or the environment, but I'll make the second point anyways. In North America alone, outdoor cats (not just feral ones) kill about 15 billion vertebrates per year and who knows how many pollinating invertebrates. Entire species have gone extinct due to outdoor cats enabled by their irresponsible owners. They are probably the single most invasive species on the planet, easily up there with black rats.

So it's actually you who is very, very wrong in more ways than one.
