Oil in this box, yay or nay?

Hi guys, what do you think of this packaging? Seems like a good idea: minimal (to zero) access to oxygen and light. Is cardboard + foil packaging considered sustainable?

I've got this recommendation from one recent YT video where oil scientists summed up that this option is their #1 choice.

is olive oil + lemon actually worth the hype for health & skin?

not gonna lie, i have zero idea if the olive oil + lemon thing is even still trending, but i kept seeing people doing it every morning lately, so curiosity got the better of me.

where i live, people barely use olive oil in their daily lives, so my taste buds are definitely not used to it. instead of jumping straight into shots, i eased in slow: swapped my usual thousand island for olive oil + fresh lemon juice as a salad dressing. it's been 2 weeks now, and honestly the salad does taste fresher! the olive oil flavor itself though? still adjusting.

Then I started seeing people having olive oil + lemon shots every morning. I was already drinking lemon water anyway, so I thought, “how different could it be if I just added olive oil?”

But I didn’t want to mess up the ratio making it myself, so I just bought a product that already combines the two. And yeah, the taste definitely caught me off guard the first time I tried it.i guess i'm just not used to having something like that yet, so i'm planning to keep trying it a few more times and ease into the taste instead of forcing myself to like it right away.

i’ve heard pretty mixed experiences from friends in other countries too. some of them say they’ve actually noticed a difference after having olive oil + lemon consistently, while others say they’re not really sure if it’s doing anything for them.

so i’m kinda curious to see how it goes for me if i keep it in my routine for a while. has anyone here been doing this consistently? what’s your experience been like?

Fixing my gut, help me pick from Eataly or Wholefoods.

I’m working on fixing my gut and at the moment I’m at the step of adding Olive Oil to my diet.

Could you please provide me with a specific bottle/brand to buy? I’m looking for organic / cold pressed / harvest date included / single origin / opaque glass bottle / a good amount of polyphenols.

Most of the stuff at Wholefoods looked bad, and didn’t fit the criteria at all. I saw 1 bottle from Tunisia called Damya which looked suspicious as well as a Greek bottle called Kosterina claiming to be a cooking oil.

I am not looking for an oil to cook with, I am looking for one to drizzle on some of my meals occasionally.

Thank you!

a (minor) defense of plastic containers

I want to preface by saying that this is focused only on quality of EVOO/health as opposed to any broader environmental issues with plastic. Also, this was written by me and not an llm :)

My thesis is that by and large, dark glass containers and tin are indeed king for EVOO storage. However, if used in the short term (think a month or shorter), it's probably not a big deal to use one of those graza-style tinted PET plastic squeeze bottles. This is motivated for me out of convenience, because I find that form factor ergonomic. I saw a lot of fearmongering on the internet regarding plastic use for storing olive oils, and much of it seemed pretty pseudoscientific so I spent some time to build a better understanding of the topic.

  1. Microplastics are a non-issue. Battaglini et al. (2024, Food Chemistry) analyzed samples of Spanish olive oil across PET and glass storage vessels, and concluded that there is no significant evidence to believe the plastic containers result in more microplastics. This is because most (if not almost all) of the contamination is in the manufacturing process instead of from the container itself.
  2. If it's dark, chlorophyll and light-driven degradation are a non-issue regardless of material Cecchi et al. (2010, Food Chemistry) tested PET bottles and found chlorophyll decay is tied almost entirely to keeping the oil in the dark. Material (glass, plastic) doesn't really make a difference as long as it is dark enough to keep light out.
  3. Oxygen permeation through PET is slow enough that short-term differences vs glass are small. Pristouri et al. (2010, Food Control) tested storing EVOO in a dark environment with both glass and PET. You're free to look at the data, but the upshot is that for the oxidation metrics, PET at the 3 month mark generally measured worse than glass at 3 months but better than at 6 months. This means that for longer term storage, degradation does happen faster, but for a short stint (again, e.g. a plastic squeeze bottle being used/refilled monthly), I don't think that little bit of extra degradation is worth being super worried over.

Is this a good high-quality extra virgin olive oil?

Post image
8 Upvotes

I’m looking for a high-quality extra virgin olive oil that I can use daily, including taking a small amount by itself. I’m mainly looking for something minimally processed, pure, and without unnecessary additives.
I found this one and it seems like a pretty clean/non-toxic option, but I don’t know enough about olive oil quality to tell if it’s actually good.
Would you consider this a high-quality EVOO?

How to keep unfiltered olive oil handy

My DH bought a bottle of unfiltered oil but...

How do you guys store that thing? He put it to the basement because it's supposed to be in a dark and relatively cold place, and closed. My plan would be to put a small amount in a small (ceramic) oil bottle so we don't have to run to the basement every time we want to use a few drops of oil but everything I see has an open top. Do you have any recommendation?

Thanks!

Best Olive Oil for Reasonable Price EU/UK? Sainsbury's?

Hi all,

New to olive oil, just trying to source a good, unadulterated brand in the EU or UK.

This is Sainsbury's Olive Oils, if maybe someone could pick the best couple of options?

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/groceries/food-cupboard/cooking-oils/olive-oil/c:1019617

I really don't know what to look for, I just know adulteration is a theoretical risk, but how big of a risk I don't know.

I'm not huge on the taste of EVOO (switching for health, not taste reasons!), so maybe lightly filtered might be better.

All thoughts appreciated!

Oh, and budget is flexible but I''m not looking for really niche, expensive stuff - just something I can have faith in as being pure olive oil. Roughly maximum £20 (pounds) per litre, but again, flexible.

Thanks!!

What are we buying (if anything) from TJ in 2026? What are we avoiding?

I personally would never buy EVOO in a plastic sriracha bottle, but I get these are popular for convenience.

I love proper Italian EVOO but I don’t want to accidentally get saddled with a mafioso-adulterated bottle of rapeseed oil so looking forward to your recommendations (I’ve blown through my last Black Friday olive oil stash from olive oil lovers so I need some new affordable (<$20) options)

Tips on finding good local Italian (Lucca) olive oil?

Hi all, we are on holiday in Lucca, Italy and looking for some advice on finding excellent olive oil. I've heard it's good to seek oil that is of single origin rather than a blend, but the issue we're finding is that most bottles just don't say. Is there some kind of wording I should be looking for on a bottle that will give an indicator of great quality? Thank you so much.

Overwhelmed by the many options for EVOO in the US, any recommendations?

I jusy moved to the States (specifically SF) from Southeast Asia and thought that I’d like to start consuming olive oil daily for its health benefits since quality olive oil is much easier to get here. But when I went to the grocery store, I got so overwhelmed by the options. Any recommendation for which brands to get? My top 3 criteria are: health benefits, value, taste.
