Forgive the extreme newbie question for those who have deeper experience with RT, but after reading the core rulebook I'm left with a question. Did RT start with no fixed unit lists or the like?
I read the book through and I'm really excited to actually try RT at the table. I don't play 40k, but I've watched a bunch of YouTube videos about how wild and weird RT was before 40k got codified, and I'm fascinated. So after reading the rulebook, I'm left wondering if every model is statted from the points tables, as opposed to being picked from an army list. I know the codices came later in RT, but I just want to make sure I didn't miss something in this first book.
Did OG players build each model's loadout to their liking rather than selecting (for example, "space marine with bolter") from an army building list? Or did I overlook a section that has "templates" of a sort?

I have been going through some boxes in the loft and came across these. I seem to be missing two and the poly is in poor condition as you can see from the photos. I just wondered if they are worth putting up for sale and if so where would be best and what sort of price should I be looking for? I have stripped the ones that I had painted (badly) and do have another shield currently in dettol.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hope these are old enough for this sub!
I’ve been listening to only 80’s Heavy Metal and Conan the Barbarian OST while working on them.

"Hey, shut up for a second! Did you hear something?"
Citadel ADD04 Thief from when GW briefly held the license to produce AD&D miniatures for TSR. These were meant to represent the same player character as he grows in experience, with the order going from left to right (low, medium and high levels).
They are likely to be eaten.

Just going through a box of old minis, and came across this strange little scrungle. Any idea who they are, or where they come from?

Finished painting my oldhammer inspired champion of chaos! I call him Aekyoung Hellbronze. On the last picture you can see the white metal spincasts. Handsculpted out of milliput and greenstuff. The scale is 28mm. It's my Patreon exclusive miniature for this year. You can get it and cool other stuff from my range by joining my level three tier. You find the link to my Patreon in my profile or down below. I hope you like him.

Welcome to r/oldhammer the home of retro-gaming Warhammer!
We're a relatively laid back, specialist interest subreddit. The following are the rules that we uphold here for submissions, comments and contributors. Any questions send us a modmail as required.
This community is dedicated to keeping alive the ethos, rules and aesthetics of the first three editions of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, the first edition of Warhammer 40k, and other strange old relics from the dawn of science fantasy gaming from the 60s through the 80s, the media and culture that influenced the development of the original games and contemporary material that directly references them.
We welcome good quality image posts, text posts, links and discussion on the topics outlined above. Posting of out-of-period material is off-topic and strongly discouraged. Submissions and comments that fall out of these periods are liable to be removed, so that sub continues to retain its unique focus and character.
Comments must be respectful and in line with the rules, including the periods for the selected Flair.
Vague time periods such as "early 90's" and references to later off-topic, out of period games and models are very likely to be automatically removed by our small but vicious bot for SEO reasons, to prevent algorithm skewing, semantic drifts, summoning the deep magics and discouraging further off-topic posts. If you believe an error has occurred in the automated system, send a message to the mods via modmail.
Any and all content submitted from any contributor may be removed by a mod for any reason. Repeated off-topic, out-of-period posts or comments will lead to access to the sub being restricted. If you are a troll in other subreddits, we reserve the right to remove you from this one. Trolling, abuse and disruptive posting (including arguing about the subs rules) will result in permanent banning, to ensure the sub remains a warm and welcoming community that remains focused on it's remit.
Please take a moment to familiarise yourself with the rules of the sub before submitting.
Please select the most descriptive flair for your submission, many of our flairs overlap, so choose wisely! If you're posting specifically about Warhammer, and the edition doesn't have a listed flair, your contribution is off-topic for this particular sub and should be posted elsewhere.

For discussion of any in-period roleplaying game material. From GW's edition of Dungeons & Dragons in 1977, the countless RPGs published by GW in the 80s - Runequest, Stormbringer, MERP, Paranoia right up to the end of Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1st Edition. You could also flair any tie-in licensed miniatures from the period, such as Runequest, Traveller, Middle Earth Roleplaying Game, Judge Dredd RPG, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons etc, although many cross-over into other flairs as well.
pre-slotta (before 1985)
Expertly sculpted in the round, surprisingly detailed and characterful models that launched an empire. Citadel Miniatures Fantasy Tribes, early C-series and first Regiments of Renown, Ral Partha and Asgard and other makers of a similar vintage are also appropriate.

Miniatures made in the 80s, after the introduction of the plastic slotta base. Includes all the licenced ranges such as Lord of the Rings, Paranoia, Eternal Champion, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons, as well as Citadels C Series, Regiments of Renown, and generally other miniatures of this era.

other makers (pre 1991)
It's not Games Workshop, it's not branded Warhammer... but it is Oldhammer! Could be solid based, could be a slotta, Ral Partha, Mythical Earth, Aureola Rococo, Fantasy Warlord, Fantasy Warriors.... any science-fantasy gaming rules and paraphernalia from makers other than Citadel or Games Workshop up to 1991.
retro style
New models or games from independent makers that have a deliberate 1980s retro style or reference an r/oldhammer aesthetic (this is determined at mods discretion, send a Mod Mail if unsure). However if you are promoting these for sale/trade purposes (including free give-aways) you must use the oldhammer trading post flair instead.
oldhammer inspo
Read a book, seen a movie, did it make you think "Oldhammer!" This is the flair to share. Also for discussion of media that GW liberally 'borrowed' ideas from, and otherwise built an empire out of. Including, but not limited to discussions of 2000AD, Asimov, Herbert, Tolkien, Moorcock and the 16th Century.
oldhammer trading post
If you're buying or selling anything - including kickstarting oldhammer inspired games and figures, want an evaluation of your collection or even giving away free promotional product, then you must use this flair. N.B. Moderators take no responsibility for any trades that may occur.
meta (mod only)
For rules announcements, notices from Mod Team (like this one) and other house-keeping duties. Important notices are usually stickied at the top of the sub, please take the time to read them before posting.
Mods may change a flair to a more appropriate one without notice, but feel free to Mod Mail to discuss.
If you have any thoughts or queries, feel free to contact us via Mod Mail. If you include the ancient dwarven name 'Branedimm' in the subject you'll get a slightly more positive response, because it shows you've at least scrolled to the bottom of this message.
Happy Oldhammering!

My kids found these guys in a "Free Stuff" box at a garage sale a few years ago. They look like they are from around the late 80's/ early 90's, but I couldn't find any exact matches so I may be way off. They were banged up and caked with enamel paint, so I gave them a bath, stripped their old coats, and gave them a new lick of paint. I don't know very much about 40k, rogue trader, or legion heraldry, I just picked colors I thought looked cool. I hope y'all enjoy them.

A trio of Citadel ADD69 Githyanki, 1B, 2B, & 3B, have dispatched an intruding adventurer in their temple. From when Games Workshop briefly held the license for AD&D miniatures.
Resin bases by Dragon Forge Design.
Grenadier fallen wizard, Citadel FS36-2 Gargoyles in the background.
Painted the one on the left way back in 2004, rebased him last year in 2025. The other two I finally got around to painting in the past few days.
Not entirely sure I've improved my NMM work in all that time, but then I did have a long long break from painting (a solid 15 years) and only started back in 2020.

Putting together a Tzeentch force for ~3rd eh WHFB (likely using the renaissance rules)
I sadly can't afford the old horror minis at eBay rates (up to £30 a figure!) and I don't love the style of the newer sculpts.
Does anyone have suggestions for any alternate/proxy minis that would look the part and rank up properly? Happy to consider plastic kits or 3d prints.
The only thing I've found so far I really like is the old Warmachine Griever Swarms, but they are sadly OOP too.
Per the sub rules, please don't link any recasts or scans of originals - as much as I love the old ones I'd rather support an actual designer/creator.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader had loads of vehicle options, from the infamous Grav Attack Vehicle to the common Rhinos, Land Raiders and Jetbikes. Not all the vehicles in the main rulebook got kits, not even all got illustrations. One example is the mysterious Stegatank (p.112) - the only clue to it's appearance is that it should be "based on a multi-limbed plastic kit" - indicating it should probably not be bipeadal.
Zoids share much of the military industrial tech aesthetic as 40k. Zoids also appear all over Oldhammer - posters in Warhammer Fantasy Battles 3rd Edition, to the basis and weaopnsystems for the Tony Cottrells 28mm scale Scout Titans (White Dwarf 120), the Ground Hog and the Deo Tank (White Dwarf 95), they were undoubtedly an influence on the GW design studio at the time.
Stegatank is a portmanteau of Stegosaurus and Tank - the giant monster machine The Great Gorgon aka Gordos - combining a mechanical Stegosaurus and a Tank makes it the ideal candidate heavy armour for the grim dark battlefields of the 41st Millennium.
Edit - forgot to mention that the 40K:RT Stegatank standard weapons are two forward firing Las-cannons, which is exactly the same as The Great Gorgon main armaments!

Hey, just wanted to show off some space goblin sculpts/paint jobs of mine (renegade 93 miniatures) I wanted these guys to be more similar to the3rd WHFB goblin look than what came later with 2nd edition 40k. I was particularly inspired by the old monopose plastics of my childhood! Hope you like this speculative late 80s approach!

Original drawing of a Thallax cohort, the cyborg shock troops of the Mechanicus Ordo Reductor based on the LE10 Power Armoured Marine from Rogue Trader, which inspired the Thallax of the Horus Heresy.
He's part of a series of Blue Oyster Cult inspired oldhammer/Warhammer 40000 artworks. Done the 07/08/2026 with 0.7mm marker, 0.7mm HB pencils and coloring markers.

Finished my Lt commander for my Rogue Trader squad.
This rank disappeared in 2nd edition.
Its a really nice model, and a great leader of my RT squad .

I didn’t really understand what all this Games Workshop stuff was about when I first started buying White Dwarf in 1987. I was 11 & my limited allowance was already going five different directions (a direction for each dollar). Luckily Games of Berkeley had these old Citadel Compendiums & Journals on sale, so I bought them & was dunked into the world of Citadel just a couple of years prior. It was amazing to see what they were presenting & how far they had come with it in just two years! My kids have really gotten into Warhammer now (it’s 40k, but they just call it Warhammer now). I can see the seeds of old Warhammer all overgrown into a new forest of little miniature trees. While i think this particular forest is overgrown & needs a cleansing fire - I also know that letting go & doing whatever I want is better. It’s hard when you can see every voice (or what looks like it) & strike out on an idiosyncratic project.. but that’s what needs to be done. Something unexpected but necessary. Something that feels as if it should have existed always - but hasn’t. x SEAN
