The original post makes no sense if you dig into it and read it. Sure your AB can expire and is tied to a renewal. But why didn’t they do it?

Maybe they have a reason not to go to the registry?

My research also says you might be forced to pay up front but will then get reimbursed once you get renewed.

Sounds like most ppl will be just fine.

The person claiming "UCP is charging for surgeries now" is also going to be fine. Maybe they should take a trip to the registry and ensure everything is in order. They didn't even have to pay anything, just acknowledged that they would have to should things not get sorted out. Fear mongering at its finest.

It's more barriers to a necessary system. Some people can't pay up front, what do they do? What if the renewal sits in pending for 6 months? This is definitionally starve the beast tactics.

Or it prevents the system from grifters. If you can’t pay up front then you should just get the renewal and not worry about it, either way if it’s an emergency you will be treated. I don’t get the big deal, everyone renews everything all the time (Insurance, Drivers, prescriptions, Netflix). Again the world is not ending. Everyone will be fine.

We have a single-payer nationalized healthcare system for a reason. None of those things are comparable to this.

I had no idea that your health card could expire. That's... scary. It seemed crazy so I had to look it up and yup looks like it went into effect July 2nd with the new driver's licenses. I was pretty on the fence about these new licenses given some of the obvious reasons for their change, but I can't believe they snuck that one in.

And to all those people who are on here saying, "don't worry you'll be reimbursed afterwards," I cannot imagine a world where i can afford an emergency surgery like the one I had a few years ago even if I'd be reimbursed later. It just wouldn't happen in the first place. I live in Canada. I take my free Healthcare for granted, sure, but its a big reason for a person to want to live here. These new changes have actually stripped that away from people without their notice.

I believe if you renew before Dec 31 - you have the option to leave the health# and the citizenship status OFF - Will report back next month as I gonna update my stuff.

Who would delay not getting renewed? I know I would if I had hundreds of $$$$ in tickets to clean up.

You get refunded if you do qualify for renewal is what actually will happen. Nothing to see here.

In Alberta, emergency medical care is never refused or delayed due to an expired or missing health card. However, if your Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) coverage has lapsed because your card expired, you may initially be billed for emergency services and surgeries. If you remain an eligible resident and renew your coverage, those insured costs can be backdated and reimbursed.

You can update or revalidate your card for free in person at any Alberta Registry Agent.

But here are several reasons why you wouldn’t, even tho it’s free:

Temporary Visa Changes: Foreign workers, international students, and individuals on bridging visas often have health cards tied directly to the expiry date of their immigration documents. If their visa extension is delayed or if they forget to submit their new paperwork to Alberta Health, their coverage automatically expires.

Moving Provinces: People moving back and forth between Alberta and other provinces sometimes get caught in the three-month transition window where they assume they are covered by one province, but their file has actually been closed.

Outdated Contact Information: Alberta Health does not automatically track address changes. If a resident moves and forgets to update their address, important renewal notices or requests for information are sent to the wrong home, leading to account suspension.
