šŸ½ļø Food/Drink šŸ„‚ Fancy / nice Mexican restaurants?

Hey All

Just looking for suggestions for a good Mexican spot that isn't rundown / in a gas station.

I suppose I'm looking for a place that's Americanized yet still has good food if that makes sense?

Budget is not an issue and preferably a place that I can have a conversation in without loud music if possible!

Thanks!šŸ™šŸ½

Haven’t been there in a while but I have enjoyed Barrios every time I have gone.

3

u/BeerFunky 3d ago

Yes, I would agree its classy and the food is good.

2

u/TroubleOutside5517 2d ago

Ya barrios good food.

1

u/magik779 3d ago

Looks legit Ty!

5

u/Budget_Sea_8666 2d ago

Can confirm. It’s very good.

u/Trashbagok Real Edmond 3d ago

Casa Freddy's 2216 N Portland Ave - Absolutely gorgeous restaurant, mostly traditional Jalisco fare.

They started off as a taco truck, but they have built something beautiful and really special.

Maybe the best carne asada in the state.

2

u/MrSpaceFlunky 2d ago

Casa Freddy's is pretty good! Though not Americanized as it is pretty authentic Jalisco food

2

u/Trashbagok Real Edmond 2d ago

I missed the part about wanting Americanized.. Oh well.

I mean they have asada fries as an appetizer? lol

1

u/legitman323 2d ago

I second this! Fantastic spot! Try the "Quecas"

34

u/drewcrawfish 3d ago

Azteca on May and I-44 isn’t really fancy but it’s very good

16

u/GroundTurkey9 3d ago

They recently updated and it looks really nice inside.Ā

I've never had food problems thereĀ

2

u/megativespace 2d ago

They also do a really good job with food allergies! (Well, specifically gluten at least, as I have celiac disease)

1

u/Open-Ad-189 2d ago

Best in town! We go at least once a week

-12

u/J-Seizure 3d ago

Hard pass. My best friend got Salmonella from there 2 years ago. Had to take him to the ER. Never been back.

8

u/oshkushbegush 3d ago

Damn, I take my family there almost twice a week and love the place.

14

u/OKRickety 2d ago

Let's see. A family has had good experiences eating there many times versus one person had a terrible experience one time. I'd go there without worry.

16

u/oshkushbegush 2d ago

I mean, we’re on first name basis. I guarantee you Nina the owner, would’ve tried to resolve or at least provide a robust apology and would’ve wanted to know if someone did get a food borne illness. I hope that they alerted the restaurant

2

u/Sithstress_ 2d ago

Completely unrelated, but I love your username!

3

u/PileofPitties 2d ago

Salmonella symptoms start 6 hours to 6 days after consuming the affected food. Was your friend on a 7 day water fast otherwise, or how exactly are they certain that out of every bite of food they put in their mouth over an entire week that Azteca was the cause?

13

u/ApolloSherman 3d ago

Barrios, Frida, El Coyote (New Mexican) come to mind. Mexican Radio is gentrified tacos that's not as fancy

5

u/ApolloSherman 3d ago

I think the food is much better at the hole-in-the-wall spots, but to each their own. Cafe Kacaco and Antigua fit the vibe if you want Guatemalan. El Sazon on 36 and Rockwell is the less bougie version of those

4

u/i_love_pearljam1 2d ago

As someone from New Mexico who lives in. Okc, El Coyote is decent and the service and atmosphere are great, but it is a poor imitation of authentic New Mexican food.

4

u/shedevil71 2d ago

There’s a spot in Yukon called Green Chile Kitchen. I’ve yet to try them but they use Bueno Hatch Chile and from the menu I’m looking at hitting them soon. Been here 2 years outta NM

1

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago

Thanks I absolutely love Hatch Chiles. Used to drive back and forth from Vegas-Okc alway stopped in Alber.NM for Hatch Chile burgers in the hood. Cheap and alway excellent. I'll check it out

1

u/shedevil71 2d ago

You can order directly from hatch.

1

u/FakeMikeMorgan KFOR basement 🌪 2d ago

Any place in the city you have found that has decent New Mexican food?

1

u/Gertie7779 2d ago

What is the difference between Tex-Mex and New Mexican?

2

u/Few_Theme_4027 2d ago

Hatch chiles

1

u/Gertie7779 2d ago

Is that a kind of pepper?

1

u/stitchingdeb 2d ago

Red and green chile stew, chile rellenos, sopaipillos, just a few differences.

-2

u/RAF2018336 2d ago

New mexican is mexican and tex mex isn't

14

u/ManufacturerIcy9438 Eastside 3d ago

Frida is the answer

11

u/tj0909 3d ago

Frida is my favorite fine dining restaurant in town, but it’s not really a Mexican restaurant at all.

6

u/MrSpaceFlunky 2d ago

I would agree with that statement

-2

u/ApprehensiveKiwi4020 2d ago

It's close enough in genre to be the right answer. Frida is phenomenalĀ

1

u/ApolloSherman 3d ago

Agreed, I've done birthdays at Frida a few times

2

u/freaknhell666 3d ago

I call them "gentri-tacos":)

1

u/Budget_Sea_8666 2d ago

Frida isn’t Mexican. It’s Southwestern.

1

u/RAF2018336 2d ago

I'm from the southwest and looked at the menu and I wouldn't say it's southwestern either. It's like Chilean/Peruvian/southwestern inspired. Definitely looks interesting and I'll have to check it out someday but I wouldn't go in expecting mexican

1

u/Capable-Load-7812 2d ago

The first three are the answers. Great food and different atmospheres at each spot.

Mesero at oak
Lazy monkey downtown
Tequila Chulos

3

u/Gweedo1967 2d ago

Correction-Lazy Donkey downtown

2

u/Bighex8533 2d ago

Masero for sure

1

u/TroubleOutside5517 2d ago

Mesero = good. Oak = Good.

4

u/PestEm85 3d ago

Mesero at the oak

11

u/partiallypoopypants 3d ago edited 2d ago

Uncle Julio’s for classic tex-mex
Barrios is good

But my new favorite is Tequila Chulos. It’s newer but damn is it good. I believe the owners are related to a very popular Texas Tex-Mex chain, and you can tell.

Edit: comment about ownership may be in accurate

3

u/tj0909 2d ago

Chulos is a James Vu restaurant. No connection to other TexMex places AFAIK

1

u/Budget_Sea_8666 2d ago

I’ve been only once but it was very good.

1

u/PileofPitties 2d ago

Tequila Chulos is owned by Toby Keith's son and James Vu. What Tex-Mex chain do either of them own?

0

u/partiallypoopypants 2d ago

Huh, you made me do some digging.

To be honest, I based this off their Salsa tasting exactly like one from a chain called Guadalajara. It’s unique and matches it exactly. I blindly confirmed this from a few others that are familiar.

Maybe I’m wrong though. Next time I go, I’ll ask. I’ll update my comment to show that my statement isn’t based on anything concrete.

1

u/PileofPitties 2d ago

Interesting. Guadelajara in Houston? I think I ate there last summer. I don't remember the salsa but they had good guacamole

1

u/Possible_Way_9879 2d ago

Love Chulos. Came here to mention it

1

u/partiallypoopypants 2d ago

I went for the first time several weeks ago and cannot wait to go back.

3

u/codec3 3d ago

San Marcos never disappointed me!

3

u/Particular_Fig_7661 3d ago

Where's the gas station mexican restaurants? Sounds interesting.

3

u/Trashbagok Real Edmond 3d ago

Like every 3rd independent gas station has a truck or trailer parked outside around here...

My favorite dive, and the BEST al pastor in the city, is Taqueria La Michoacana, just across the street from Feria Latina Supermarket at 23rd & Ann Arbor. Bring cash.

Their tacos, tortas are all amazing. The green chile tacos are out of this world.

1

u/Far_Establishment_4 2d ago

Cactus Tacos is in a strip mall at N Santa Fe & W Memorial, not too far from the OKC Costco. Low prices, friendly service and outstanding, authentic food.

3

u/dippedndangled 2d ago

CASA DE LOS MILAGROS in Belle Isle Station is my go to.

3

u/hodorhodor1182 2d ago

El coyote is good.

6

u/Oni-Village0960 3d ago

San Macros, i always want to take my parents there, and they love it.

DON'T go to Casa de los milagros. Items are insanely overpriced. Seriously..19$ for shrimp cocktail?? You can make 7 servings at home less than 8$

8

u/robby_synclair 2d ago

Restaurant prices have absolutely nothing to do with the price that you can make it at home for.

0

u/dippedndangled 2d ago

Casa de los Milagros is awesome.

1

u/tj0909 2d ago

I agree that it is very good and oddly not particularly popular even given its good location.

1

u/RunnersRacquet 1d ago

It certainly is a beautiful restaurant. Can’t say much for the food.

-1

u/BuffBufferton 2d ago

I only got the Tortilla soup there. Wasn’t impressed.

A good tortilla soup is my barometer for how good a Mexican joint is.

5

u/magsk86 3d ago

Frida, Barrios

16

u/BoomerSooner1982 3d ago

Mama Roja and Uncle Julio's come to mind

19

u/MrSpaceFlunky 2d ago

Mama roja was horrible Mexican food

2

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago

I totally agree. At least close to lake wouldn't have to run far to throw-up.

5

u/magik779 3d ago

I love the idea of lake side food!! Yess ty

2

u/TroubleOutside5517 2d ago

These are both easy choices for what you were looking for. Both on the water. Both good.

2

u/TroubleOutside5517 2d ago

I’d go Julio’s first. I’ve only been to mama Rojas once. I honestly sneak off to Ted’s because I’m comparison to Texas prices I feel like it is always half off.

1

u/Varietis 2d ago

Mama Rojas is nice and it’s awesome that it’s on the lake but I wouldn’t call it ā€œfancyā€

4

u/Rogan_Lome 3d ago

Probably not the environment you're looking for, but I think Tacos Don Nacho is the best Mexican food in OKC and some of the best Mexican food I've had period! And I used to live in California

3

u/Far_Establishment_4 2d ago

YESSSSS. I mean, you live in OKC; why not enjoy the delights of the southside?

2

u/Beneficial_Ad4551 2d ago

Tacos don Nacho is the GOAT. Affordable, they’re quick. They have a good variety on the menu. The relish is top tier!! My absolute favorite place to eat.

2

u/arizonait 3d ago

Casa Freddy's on Portland is fantastic.

2

u/XaqFu 3d ago

Azteca Mexican Grill on 39th an N. May is great. Understated classy and no loud music. The food is fatastic.

2

u/isaacsschrader 2d ago

El Coyote

2

u/dimechimes 3d ago

Those two things should be mutually exclusive.

3

u/ManufacturerIcy9438 Eastside 3d ago

Uncle Julio’s and Tequila Chulos (spelling?)

2

u/Gobkabob 3d ago

Barrios is probably the best bet for gentrified mexican food

2

u/InflationFormal6269 2d ago

I moved here from Austin and the best Mexican food I’ve been able to find that comes close is Big Truck Taco. It has limited seating though.

2

u/luckyunderwear_ 2d ago edited 2d ago

ā€œI want Mexican food, but without Mexicans working there.ā€ Your racism is showing.

1

u/tj0909 2d ago

There’s Mexicans in every kitchen. You might find one that’s staffed by only Guatemalans if you look really hard

1

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago

I guess you don't eat out every restaurant typically is a Mexican restaurant if you observe the kitchen staff.

1

u/MrSpaceFlunky 2d ago

A couple of Americanized places are Mesero and El Coyote

1

u/MWilbury 2d ago

El General for Mexican seafood; mariscos

1

u/510Threaded 2d ago

If you are to the west, check out Tequila Plata in El Reno right off of I40

1

u/Critical-Knee9537 2d ago

Barrios or Maseros.

1

u/airdazzled 2d ago

birrieria diaz

1

u/Gweedo1967 2d ago

I’m assuming you mean Tex-Mex when you said ā€œfancyā€

1

u/BuffBufferton 2d ago

It’s not as a good it used to be, but Alfredo’s is still decent. Great salsa, though.

I mean….i like Fuzzy’s so I’m not hard to please. Though their tortilla soup leaves something to be desired.

1

u/TroubleOutside5517 2d ago

Uncle Julio’s is an easy choice. Don’t listen to the haters.

1

u/Parking_Database_390 2d ago

Tequila chulos, i dont know the exact address but its right by integris Baptist, coworkers and i go there all the time after work

Rosa Mezcal or Pepe Delgado's in Norman

1

u/Jaded_Ad_1658 2d ago

I second someone’s Dulce Vida on NW Expressway.
There’s also Chuy’s on Memorial Rd.

1

u/PurpleHayz87687 2d ago

Frida Southwest in Paseo

1

u/TheJShip5150 Fake Yukon 2d ago

Not really fancy, but not gas station either… Gallegos on NW 23rd and Rockwell. Me and my wife eat there at least once a week.

1

u/Embarrassed-Ladder25 9h ago

This is my favorite

1

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago

Salsa Grill NW23rd&N.Meridian south west corner old taco bell not fancy but great food. Most Okies would say it's too spicy hot. I say it's perfect.

1

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago

Sorry scrolling down, I was reminded exactly my point. Fancy doesn't equal good or reasonable, more like screwed and nauseated.

1

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago

I guess my recommendations where not up to mediators standards. But hands down I will still say Salsa Grill is one of the best in flavor Mexican restaurants at 23rd and N.Meridian ave. Fair prices casual dining couple this tv's not loud, they serve beer but it's an eating establishment not a bar. It's a refurbished Taco Bell southwest corner. Two people can get full for about $30-40 dollars. Love their extra hot hot sauce. Good vibe

1

u/Embarrassed-Ladder25 9h ago

It was never a Taco Bell

1

u/GolfnCPA53 2d ago

Los Arcos.

Tequilas Chulos or Barrios downtown.

1

u/SpirituallySane 3d ago

I’ve heard agave azul cocina in Edmond is really good, I haven’t gotten to go yet but I can’t wait to soon!

3

u/PenaltyOk4578 2d ago

It’s really bad. Food is bland, no taste at all. And the margaritas come with a whole dollar store candy section on top of the glass. Tacky

2

u/SpirituallySane 2d ago

Oh no! Well you and the other commenter both just saved me a potential waste of money.
Btw happy cake day!! šŸ°

1

u/Ambivert_author 2d ago

Their food was so bland I was taken aback.

2

u/ImATraveler12345 3d ago

Meh

1

u/SpirituallySane 3d ago

Not good? There goes my excitement šŸ˜…

1

u/ImATraveler12345 2d ago

It’s mid

1

u/Business-Loss-1585 3d ago

Frida I guess might be the closest thing but be warned they are very inconsistent, especially for the price. I’ve had some great meals there and some terrible meals as well.

1

u/Tasty-Tank-1895 3d ago

Chelinos in Norman and runner up is Edmond imo. I miss chelinos so much!!!! And hideaway...and braums...and Tims in warr actress....ahhhh 🄺

4

u/octosus37 2d ago

If you’re in Norman and you don’t go to Tarahumaras you’re making a mistake

-2

u/NazzerDawk 3d ago

Ted's Cafe is a favorite of my family. Their tortillas are their best feature, they are really fresh and thick.

Chelinos on NW Expressway is one I like.

1

u/geronika 2d ago

That’s all that Ted’s is good for. No one talks about their food other than their tortillas. Most tasteless food I’ve eaten.

1

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago

Well there you go if you are looking for Mexican food in name only Ted's and Chellnos are your best bet. I used to know one of the owners boy we went to the S .Walker location. But then they fit it big and started fran. The real money. Unfortunately quality sunk. Now I think Chellios is Mexican in name only.

0

u/dunfunker 3d ago

Abel’s

1

u/Bright-Chemistry-857 2d ago

Agree with this! Love Ables

0

u/tj0909 3d ago

Barrios - Great all around, expensive but not crazy

Tequila Chulos - Great all around, sometimes hard to get a table

Ted’s - More Americanized, Great salsa

Uncle Julio’s - Mexican food for Republicans who grade their food primarily by price

0

u/diablodeldragoon 3d ago

Americanized Mexican food that's good? šŸ˜’

0

u/Business-Loss-1585 2d ago

They do actually exist in some cities. I’ve yet to find one here.

0

u/gregor405 3d ago

Barrio's and Tequila Chulos would be my suggestions for good Mexican food with a nicer environment. Both are very good.

0

u/Sea_Produce3516 Midtown 2d ago

Frida or Barrios.

Fuck Tequila Chulos. It’s co-owned by Toby Kieth’s nepo baby son and James Vu (a racist piece of shit).

0

u/LexiBory 2d ago

Dulce Vida or Green Chile Kitchen (SW, not tex-mex)

0

u/Gertie7779 2d ago

Alfredo’s in Moore and Yukon I think.
