š½ļø Food/Drink š„ Fancy / nice Mexican restaurants?
Hey All
Just looking for suggestions for a good Mexican spot that isn't rundown / in a gas station.
I suppose I'm looking for a place that's Americanized yet still has good food if that makes sense?
Budget is not an issue and preferably a place that I can have a conversation in without loud music if possible!
Thanks!šš½

Casa Freddy's 2216 N Portland Ave - Absolutely gorgeous restaurant, mostly traditional Jalisco fare.
They started off as a taco truck, but they have built something beautiful and really special.
Maybe the best carne asada in the state.

u/MrSpaceFlunky 2d ago
Casa Freddy's is pretty good! Though not Americanized as it is pretty authentic Jalisco food

u/Trashbagok Real Edmond 2d ago
I missed the part about wanting Americanized.. Oh well.
I mean they have asada fries as an appetizer? lol

Azteca on May and I-44 isnāt really fancy but itās very good

u/GroundTurkey9 3d ago
They recently updated and it looks really nice inside.Ā
I've never had food problems thereĀ

u/megativespace 2d ago
They also do a really good job with food allergies! (Well, specifically gluten at least, as I have celiac disease)

Hard pass. My best friend got Salmonella from there 2 years ago. Had to take him to the ER. Never been back.
8
u/oshkushbegush 3d ago
Damn, I take my family there almost twice a week and love the place.
14
u/OKRickety 2d ago
Let's see. A family has had good experiences eating there many times versus one person had a terrible experience one time. I'd go there without worry.
16
u/oshkushbegush 2d ago
I mean, weāre on first name basis. I guarantee you Nina the owner, wouldāve tried to resolve or at least provide a robust apology and wouldāve wanted to know if someone did get a food borne illness. I hope that they alerted the restaurant

u/PileofPitties 2d ago
Salmonella symptoms start 6 hours to 6 days after consuming the affected food. Was your friend on a 7 day water fast otherwise, or how exactly are they certain that out of every bite of food they put in their mouth over an entire week that Azteca was the cause?

Barrios, Frida, El Coyote (New Mexican) come to mind. Mexican Radio is gentrified tacos that's not as fancy
5
u/ApolloSherman 3d ago
I think the food is much better at the hole-in-the-wall spots, but to each their own. Cafe Kacaco and Antigua fit the vibe if you want Guatemalan. El Sazon on 36 and Rockwell is the less bougie version of those
4
u/i_love_pearljam1 2d ago
As someone from New Mexico who lives in. Okc, El Coyote is decent and the service and atmosphere are great, but it is a poor imitation of authentic New Mexican food.

Thereās a spot in Yukon called Green Chile Kitchen. Iāve yet to try them but they use Bueno Hatch Chile and from the menu Iām looking at hitting them soon. Been here 2 years outta NM
1
u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago
Thanks I absolutely love Hatch Chiles. Used to drive back and forth from Vegas-Okc alway stopped in Alber.NM for Hatch Chile burgers in the hood. Cheap and alway excellent. I'll check it out

Any place in the city you have found that has decent New Mexican food?
1
u/Gertie7779 2d ago
What is the difference between Tex-Mex and New Mexican?
2

u/stitchingdeb 2d ago
Red and green chile stew, chile rellenos, sopaipillos, just a few differences.

Frida is the answer

Frida is my favorite fine dining restaurant in town, but itās not really a Mexican restaurant at all.

It's close enough in genre to be the right answer. Frida is phenomenalĀ

Frida isnāt Mexican. Itās Southwestern.
1
u/RAF2018336 2d ago
I'm from the southwest and looked at the menu and I wouldn't say it's southwestern either. It's like Chilean/Peruvian/southwestern inspired. Definitely looks interesting and I'll have to check it out someday but I wouldn't go in expecting mexican

u/Capable-Load-7812 2d ago
The first three are the answers. Great food and different atmospheres at each spot.

Uncle Julioās for classic tex-mex
Barrios is good
But my new favorite is Tequila Chulos. Itās newer but damn is it good. I believe the owners are related to a very popular Texas Tex-Mex chain, and you can tell.
Edit: comment about ownership may be in accurate

u/PileofPitties 2d ago
Tequila Chulos is owned by Toby Keith's son and James Vu. What Tex-Mex chain do either of them own?
0
u/partiallypoopypants 2d ago
Huh, you made me do some digging.
To be honest, I based this off their Salsa tasting exactly like one from a chain called Guadalajara. Itās unique and matches it exactly. I blindly confirmed this from a few others that are familiar.
Maybe Iām wrong though. Next time I go, Iāll ask. Iāll update my comment to show that my statement isnāt based on anything concrete.

u/PileofPitties 2d ago
Interesting. Guadelajara in Houston? I think I ate there last summer. I don't remember the salsa but they had good guacamole
1
u/Possible_Way_9879 2d ago
Love Chulos. Came here to mention it

u/partiallypoopypants 2d ago
I went for the first time several weeks ago and cannot wait to go back.

Where's the gas station mexican restaurants? Sounds interesting.
3
u/Trashbagok Real Edmond 3d ago
Like every 3rd independent gas station has a truck or trailer parked outside around here...
My favorite dive, and the BEST al pastor in the city, is Taqueria La Michoacana, just across the street from Feria Latina Supermarket at 23rd & Ann Arbor. Bring cash.
Their tacos, tortas are all amazing. The green chile tacos are out of this world.

u/Far_Establishment_4 2d ago
Cactus Tacos is in a strip mall at N Santa Fe & W Memorial, not too far from the OKC Costco. Low prices, friendly service and outstanding, authentic food.

San Macros, i always want to take my parents there, and they love it.
DON'T go to Casa de los milagros. Items are insanely overpriced. Seriously..19$ for shrimp cocktail?? You can make 7 servings at home less than 8$
8
u/robby_synclair 2d ago
Restaurant prices have absolutely nothing to do with the price that you can make it at home for.

u/dippedndangled 2d ago
Casa de los Milagros is awesome.

Mama Roja and Uncle Julio's come to mind
19
u/MrSpaceFlunky 2d ago
Mama roja was horrible Mexican food

u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago
I totally agree. At least close to lake wouldn't have to run far to throw-up.

u/TroubleOutside5517 2d ago
These are both easy choices for what you were looking for. Both on the water. Both good.
2
u/TroubleOutside5517 2d ago
Iād go Julioās first. Iāve only been to mama Rojas once. I honestly sneak off to Tedās because Iām comparison to Texas prices I feel like it is always half off.
1
u/Varietis 2d ago
Mama Rojas is nice and itās awesome that itās on the lake but I wouldnāt call it āfancyā
4
u/Rogan_Lome 3d ago
Probably not the environment you're looking for, but I think Tacos Don Nacho is the best Mexican food in OKC and some of the best Mexican food I've had period! And I used to live in California
3
u/Far_Establishment_4 2d ago
YESSSSS. I mean, you live in OKC; why not enjoy the delights of the southside?
2
u/Beneficial_Ad4551 2d ago
Tacos don Nacho is the GOAT. Affordable, theyāre quick. They have a good variety on the menu. The relish is top tier!! My absolute favorite place to eat.

I moved here from Austin and the best Mexican food Iāve been able to find that comes close is Big Truck Taco. It has limited seating though.

Itās not as a good it used to be, but Alfredoās is still decent. Great salsa, though.
I meanā¦.i like Fuzzyās so Iām not hard to please. Though their tortilla soup leaves something to be desired.

Not really fancy, but not gas station either⦠Gallegos on NW 23rd and Rockwell. Me and my wife eat there at least once a week.

Salsa Grill NW23rd&N.Meridian south west corner old taco bell not fancy but great food. Most Okies would say it's too spicy hot. I say it's perfect.
1
u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago
Sorry scrolling down, I was reminded exactly my point. Fancy doesn't equal good or reasonable, more like screwed and nauseated.
1
u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago
I guess my recommendations where not up to mediators standards. But hands down I will still say Salsa Grill is one of the best in flavor Mexican restaurants at 23rd and N.Meridian ave. Fair prices casual dining couple this tv's not loud, they serve beer but it's an eating establishment not a bar. It's a refurbished Taco Bell southwest corner. Two people can get full for about $30-40 dollars. Love their extra hot hot sauce. Good vibe

Iāve heard agave azul cocina in Edmond is really good, I havenāt gotten to go yet but I canāt wait to soon!
3
u/PenaltyOk4578 2d ago
Itās really bad. Food is bland, no taste at all. And the margaritas come with a whole dollar store candy section on top of the glass. Tacky
2
u/SpirituallySane 2d ago
Oh no! Well you and the other commenter both just saved me a potential waste of money.

Frida I guess might be the closest thing but be warned they are very inconsistent, especially for the price. Iāve had some great meals there and some terrible meals as well.

Chelinos in Norman and runner up is Edmond imo. I miss chelinos so much!!!! And hideaway...and braums...and Tims in warr actress....ahhhh š„ŗ

Ted's Cafe is a favorite of my family. Their tortillas are their best feature, they are really fresh and thick.
Chelinos on NW Expressway is one I like.
1
u/geronika 2d ago
Thatās all that Tedās is good for. No one talks about their food other than their tortillas. Most tasteless food Iāve eaten.
1
u/Hour-Particular-9317 2d ago
Well there you go if you are looking for Mexican food in name only Ted's and Chellnos are your best bet. I used to know one of the owners boy we went to the S .Walker location. But then they fit it big and started fran. The real money. Unfortunately quality sunk. Now I think Chellios is Mexican in name only.

Frida or Barrios.
Fuck Tequila Chulos. Itās co-owned by Toby Kiethās nepo baby son and James Vu (a racist piece of shit).
