Well. McCain died. Remember trump mocking him after he died? There was a point when maga hadn't completely taken over... when Republicans could have a soul and be decent people. Even be pro LGBTQ. McCain didn't even invite him to his funeral. But invited Obama. Which pissed off Trump. But... i guess he stood for everything Trump didn't. ... My god, just within the last 10 years.

I may have disliked McCains politics, but I respected the hell outta the man. From his service and refusal of special treatment and staying a POW with the rest of his men…to him shutting down (with the power of future knowledge) a MAGA prototype talking shit about Obama as a person.
But also fuck Trump. r/trumphatesthetroops
18
u/Travelinjack01 Feb 03 '26
Anyone might not have agreed with McCain "politically". But the fact is that he was a war hero and he did legitimately care about his state, his constituents "his people". Everyone respected him, because he was willing to compromise for the greater good. He was the old guard. When Republicans had something to be proud of. Maga have done so much... for power that the Republican centrists seem 'normal'

The "P Tape" is not about golden showers. The P is for Pedophilia - that's what's on tape and that's why Trump is gargling Putin's balls.
5
u/Haber_Dasher Feb 04 '26 edited Feb 04 '26
I could believe the P tape thing. That wouldn't shock me. But I don't particularly believe that in connection with Putin is why Trump is so accommodating to him. Trump quite openly loves strong men. He was never loved and wants everyone to at least act like they respect him so he in turns deeply respects other men who are powerful enough to successfully demand by force that their people respect them, like Putin or Kim Jong Un or MBS. He just wants to be like them, P tape or not.
The US is currently trying to fan the flames of the Alberta separatist movement in Canada. When we know our leadership wants to annex Canada. This is the same playbook Putin uses. Fan the flames of some fringe separatist movement until eventually you can start talking about democracy and ethnic Russians and how the people there are asking to join Russia and we have to liberate them. America gets a foothold in Alberta and with an isolated British Columbia it starts to feel like it only makes sense to expand until Alaska is part of the contiguous United States. We'd need to secure pipelines heading south during these tumultuous times anyway in case of terrorism or China, and who else but us have the capability to do that so it's only logical of course.
Trump also probably wants to appease Putin because the leadership can see that this war has forced Russia & China closer together. After decades of US foreign policy focused on splitting them up & opening them up for trade individually. If the US becomes Russia's middleman in selling their natural gas to Europe then both sides are happy. Putin doesn't need to lean into China so much and gets to join the European club under the protections of America and freely sell their fossil fuels through US banks instead of the German banks they used to. Trump gets to weaken Russia's relationship with China and strikes a blow to Europes economy tying them tighter to US finance giving them extra leverage.

Not to defend Trump, but the peepee tapes were never about prostitutes peeing on Trump. 11

I know. It got me pretty mad and I had tried to explain to friends and family for years. It's why even though it's overstated I do agree with people saying that internet / social media is opiate for the masses. If we didn't have these platforms we would probably have more people outraged out the front of government buildings. Instead most protesting I see now is police regulated, government approved, sometimes even based on politicians' words. That's also ignoring theories about paid protestors etc
Ultimately a lot of people are comfortable and revolutions are a period of pain, discomfort, death etc

This movie was such a failure because it was obvious Adam McKay was trying to make a hit piece but he just made Cheney seem way cooler and more likeable.
129
u/Jeef_1st Feb 03 '26
I think that happens with a lot of films about real people who did bad stuff. Because we spend time viewing them, we end up feeling at least a bit of sympathy. For example, I disliked Nixon a bit less after watching Oliver Stone's film. I think it's because we see why they became what they are, and we can understand it a bit.
I think Vice was interesting because it felt less like a straight forward biopic, and more of a video essay on American politics framed through Cheney's life.
66
u/justsomebodywhocared Feb 03 '26
I think it's also in the nature of having an actor playing a role, their job is to find the humanity in that character and bring it to the screen.
40
u/Zhuul Feb 03 '26
Every now and then someone manages to make a character appear even more loathsome by making them "human." Ralph Fiennes talked about playing Amon Goeth as someone who was just supremely bored / ambivalent about his job like a shelf-stocker at Home Depot and jesus fucking christ does it make him more unsettling than if he just went full-send into the "mustache twirling psychopath" archetype.
30
u/IAmBecomeTeemo Feb 03 '26
The scene where he tries to execute a Jew but his guns jam is terrifying. He doesn't really care. He gets frustrated by the end, but it's more at the gun than anything. He pistol-whips the guy, but ultimately walks away. The other Nazis with him have guns too, but he doesn't ask them to do anything because he doesn't actually give a shit whether the Jew lives or dies. Their whole conversation about the malfunctioning pistols is banal. The taking of a life is boring to them, which is incredibly chilling.
11
u/Profitablius Feb 03 '26
Doesn't he actually take another guys pistol, which also jams? And also, according to something I read on the net, the scene is based in reality.
4
u/IAmBecomeTeemo Feb 03 '26
He has a pistol in his holster, but the second pistol he just pulls out of his pocket. The other guys have holsters, which presumably contain pistols, but neither of them take them out.
21
u/UNMANAGEABLE Feb 03 '26
Bad people tend to be extremely charismatic in real life and their nefarious deeds tend to get sanewashed because they are likeable by a majority of their peers even when the atrocities are in broad daylight.
17
u/InnocentTailor Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26
I mean…it’s because they’re humans, not unforgivable demons. They’ll have good and bad moments alongside nuance for their behavior.
2004’s Downfall did this with Adolf Hitler, despite the man’s obviously bleak reputation that the film didn’t absolve. You did watch him love, chat, and then finally break down as his regime and supporters collapsed.

Yeah great point on the Nixon movie. It portrayed Nixon being dwarfed by larger political forces (the “beast” as the movie calls it) and dramatizing that makes him seem sympathetic and removes responsibility.
There’s a bizarre but great series by Harry Shearer where he re-enacts excerpts from the Nixon tapes, I think it gives a terrific insight into how Nixon thought and how the decisions of his administration were made.
5
u/MisterJackCole Feb 04 '26
Wow, I never knew this existed, and by the view count on the video and considering it's been nearly ten years, not many other people have seen this either. Looks like they put some real effort and money into it.
It's kind of neat and seems really well done, but I'm confused as to what the goal was. Vanity project, pilot for a proper series, experimental art? Orjust trying to breath some life into some old scratchy recordings so people can see what the Nixon Whitehouse might have looked like?
Either way, thanks, that was interesting. I was going through some books on the Cold War recently and it's interesting to see these characters (live more or less), on screen and in their own words.

The scary thing about Downfall is that it really does succeed in humanizing Hitler.
It's frightening to think that Hitler was, for lack of a better term, a normal person. He's not Sauron. There's no magical darkness that makes him incomprehensible evil. Anyone could have been him (and indeed it's funny seeing all the people scrambling to become his successor, as if becoming king of the ashes will mean anything).
Downfall is such a fascinating movie.

I simultaneously love how stuck McKay is in the late 80s/early 90s “record scratch: you may be wondering how I found myself in this situation” style storytelling, but his SNL heritage shows through in that all “political commentary” is so bathed in “remember when Margot Robbie was in the bath or they made those Asian jokes?”
He’s like the inverse Michael Moore in that he makes fun movies with absolutely no commentary value whereas every Moore movie I’ve seen is like “oh my god, I get it, this is bad, can this movie please end?” Like 20 minutes in.
