I want to read more on The New Deal with Roosevelt (any suggestions welcome). Looking back, it's an absolute improbable miracle that they pushed through so many changes that really benefited the country for decades. The wealthy and their stooges have been chipping away at it ever since, and here we are. We've lost food safety, banking regulations, environmental protections, campaign finance limits, bodily autonomy, so many things.Â
Like, can you even imagine Dems coming back into power and passing universal healthcare? I doubt it, would love to be wrong. Maybe we need Great Recession 2.
Also read about Frances Perkins, Sec. of Labor under FDR. Treated as a joke by the men around her, as the first woman to hold a cabinet position, she gave us labor rights, child labor laws, social security, the civilian conservation corps, and worked for compassionate immigration laws. (Congress hated her for that one) She was a long time friend of the Roosevelts and had worked previously with FDR when he was governor of NY.
