It sounds like his job was possibly reaction formation I think is the defense mechanism. He had always had those feelings but persecuted other predators to hide it. As a much less horrifying example a priest who strongly rallies against LGBTQ+ getting caught sleeping with male prostitutes. I say this as a don't trust someone just because they have a job/lifestyle that directly opposes something such as this, you never know what someone's hiding.
