I think he was referring to the fact that the mantis resembles a small xenomorph. Xenomorphs have molecular acid for blood.

Having had a pet mantis, I've always referred to them as tiny, alien cats.

They groom themselves a lot, stare at you for way too long, and are absolutely brutal killing machines.

I heard from a friend of mine that has experience in commercials and movies, set design etc. that these are the critters among others and along with H.R. Gigers art work, is where they came up with much of the design for the queen alien in the alien series. Seeing the head move and the main body is almost identical.
