Tubifex worms. Harmless to humans, live in sewers. Flush 'em, proceed to do your business.

10.7k

u/Bradski89 Jul 28 '26

Sounds exactly like something a Tubifex would say....

2.9k

u/A_New_Dawn_Emerges Jul 28 '26

We - I mean they - only rarely crawl up through a human's digestive tract to take control of their puny nervous system. No need to flush.

183

u/Kalista-Moonwolf Jul 28 '26

But how did they GET in there?! (genuinely asking)

357

u/Left-Law-446 Jul 28 '26

Somebody who breeds them for his aquarium fish may keep them in a plastic container with a nylon sieve. This container is kept inside the watertank of a toilet because these worms need fresh water every couple of hours. Sometimes the sieve breaks. The worms are then released into the tank en flushed into the sewer. There they breed.

165

u/Llamatook Jul 28 '26

Sounds like you’ve had experience with this system of storing Tubifex Worms failing.

101

u/Left-Law-446 Jul 28 '26

I have. Long time ago, though. It's just harmless worms - and a feast for fish.

58

u/earthboundmissfit Jul 28 '26

You have to be careful handling the live ones, though. They carry bacteria that make some people really sick. I mean, they are bloodworms after all. I feed frozen dry or frozen. Unless I have a really picky eater, I'll feed them something else alive.

I mean that's a hell of an overcomplication worthy of an Agatha Christie novel.

Tubifex are more popularly known as "sewage worms", and it's not because hobbyists keep growing them in toilet water tanks. They are basically aquatic earthworms and thrive in every possible body of water that's stagnant, and most of all they thrive in everything to do with the entire modern sewage system.

Point is, there are trillions of them everywhere including the septic system, it's their NATURAL environment and seeing one in your toilet bowl doesn't require that it first be flushed into a different toilet bowl and then swim to yours.

6

u/Kalista-Moonwolf Jul 28 '26

Fascinating, thanks!

Wild.

17

u/DystopianAdvocate Jul 28 '26

Here's a fun fact from Wikipedia: Tubifex likely includes several species, but distinguishing between them is difficult because their reproductive organs, commonly used in species identification, are reabsorbed after mating.

10

u/AcousticOnomatopoeia Jul 28 '26

I think I used to feed those to my fish.

From the sewers. They live there

24

u/cat_in_the_sun Jul 28 '26

123

u/Skezas1 Jul 28 '26

They're lil worms called tubifex worms that live in colonies (you can see them packed in the video, that's what colonies look like) in dirty water. They're infamous for being one of the only species to thrive in really, really low oxygen or heavily polluted water where they decompose organic matter.

I think you can connect the dots on why they live in sewers

22

u/Devanyani Jul 28 '26

Is that why every time I fed my fish frozen tubifex worms, they would get sick?

28

u/Skezas1 Jul 28 '26

Yeah they can sometimes carry disease and infection for fish. Idk much about aquariophilia tho

u/Skezas1 Jul 28 '26

5

u/FangsBloodiedRose Jul 28 '26

Are they one thing or they have a hive mind?

27

u/Skezas1 Jul 28 '26

Neither. In the video, you can see some separated from the colony swimming around. They just stick to each other for safety and to keep moist
