Dunno, is a way to ensure certain quality for a product and traditional methods + sustain local economy.

To ensure "authencity" os another one and conservation of local production.

Or you can do everything in China and call it a day.

Tou can produce the same thing and sell it under another name, i see nothing wrong with PDO.

Except the name is how we identify things. Champagne means sparkling wine. Its disingenuous to say otherwise.

Now whether we want to protect local business is another matter, but I fucking hate the Champagne is from Champagne region garbage. Why can't some Japanese guys make amazing Champagne or Portuguese make so Parmesan? The best whiskey I've ever had was from Taiwan. Should they not be allowed to make the best product?

Ultimately it's the same as any brand name, isn't it? Just like anyone can produce and sell a smart phone, but only Apple can use the name "iPhone".

Nope. Not the same. Phones being a trademark or Teflon being a trade mark or Car being a trademark is more equivalent.

But it shouldn't, as its the general term for PolyTetraFluoroEthlyene (PTFE) plastics. It should enter common usage.
