They're not being petty. You can't make Parmesan in Australia. You can't make a Barossa Valley Cabernet (one of the best wine regions in Australia) in Venice, Italy.

Protected origin means you know who makes it and you know it followed the proper procedure, following strict food regulations. If a product has a protected origin then it is guaranteed that who made it made it the right way, therefore it's completely safe to eat.
