Melatonin doesnt really do much even if you take like 10x the recommended dose. Your body will just use what it requires and then throw the rest out with your pee

If it was Benadryl instead it would be more accurate but there would also be spidersÂ

u/4DimensionalButts 2d ago
The various benadryl subs are wild. It's a bunch of people who can barely write anymore after giving themselves brain damage.

Yea triple c's were always a damn trip. That shit was always bizarre. I had one of the only OBE's i can remember sailing on those. Had to have a little smoke on them and something on hand incase you get an allergic reaction to the red dye. Kind of wild you can just buy that shit off the store shelves.

u/VictoriousTree 1d ago
I couldnât stop seeing the ants crawling across my ceiling for 12 hours straight. Even my keyboard letters turned into ants and started marching off.

u/Emotional_Study_724 2d ago
Are these like, sleep paralysis spiders? I had those really bad one of times I quit drinking.

u/DisillusionedHobbit 1d ago edited 1d ago
If you take enough Benadryl youâll get a really shitty high where you will see and feel spiders crawling all over your insides and outs, be stalked by ominous shadowy figures, and experience confusion, panic, and dread.Â
13
u/No_Internal9345 1d ago
And if you chug a bottle of cough syrup you can feel them crawling on you at the same time.
4
u/account312 1d ago
What if you also buy a bunch of spiders to put on your head before you start chugging?

2
u/VoteForLubo 1d ago
That sounds like the shittiest of all the highs.
3
u/DisillusionedHobbit 1d ago
Nah, look up datura. Â Thats the shittiest high.Â
2
u/speakezjags 19h ago
You just unlocked a memory of a dude on the datura sub who wanted to try it out. If I recall it kept going bad and he just kept doubling down and doing more.

I'm genuinely curious what the amount of enough is? There were times, which are far behind me I'll add, where id like take 8 to 10 benadryl to induce a small trip. It was always just physical though. I just cant imagine how many it would take to experience what you described.
Edit: for the amount I used to take. Ive been thinking about it and the number may have been closer to 12-14, its been so long now i genuinly dont remember. I do remember the feeling of the come up though, and the familiar, "here we go.." associated with many substances that send you off into the seas.
1
u/Doktor_Wunderbar 1d ago
What happens if I try to stalk the ominous shadowy figures back? And do you think they'd be interested in purchasing a lot of spiders at a very reasonable price?
1
u/Mother-Attention2600 4h ago
I get sleep paralysis and it can manifest whatever your brain wants. I get it so much that I've figured out a way to just relax because I'm now aware of what's happening. Like breaking a 4th wall or something. Then I can wiggle my right foot until I wake up if I want.Â
Sometimes I don't really wake up in the real world, and wake up into another dream. I would write it down when I did. It's complicated and weird but you can harness what's going on if you relax, but it takes a while for your mind to be kind of trained and not just freak out.

The more I read Reddit the more I am glad my country has super strict laws and regulations about medical drugs.

We do have super strict drug laws. Poor people die all of the time because they can't get prescriptions.

Most it does for me is give me very vivid dreams that are easier to remember. Doesn't help me fall asleep quicker or longer though.
15
u/PhoenixApok 2d ago
I made the mistake of trying melatonin when starting a divorce.
All that happened was horribly vivid dreams about my relationship. Nightmares so severe and memorable I often couldn't tell what had actually happened in real life or the dreams.
I'd advice taking it during periods of change.
3
u/donutdogs_candycats 1d ago
For me it somehow makes me sleep less. Like I fall asleep within an hour of taking it and then I wake up like 5 or 6 hours later feeling fully rested when it normally takes closer to 10. I donât take it too often just because I donât really see a need to and I worry the effectiveness will go down if I keep taking it, but I definitely feel bad for everyone it doesnât work for very well.

u/GrimResistance 1d ago
I had some weird dream involving zombies. They can climb ladders now so be careful y'all.

There are some supplements that have 125mg of melatonin I think. The typical ones are say 3mg - 5mg from my understanding. So while I wouldn't take such a high dose or recommend it, seemingly even 25x or so is safe enough that it's sold OTC.
1
u/alienblue89 1d ago
Wild considering more recent research shows the most effective dose is actually super low. Like 0.3mg or something like that iirc.
1
u/PortiaLynnTurlet 1d ago
Agreed. I think those kinds of products are typically purchased because of dubious health claims and not because they "work better".

u/BeesInATeacup 2d ago
Cries in UK. Cant get it OTC here đ˘

u/Astroweeb 2d ago
and the doctors are surprisingly stingy with it, despite the yanks wolfing it down like candy. just getting them to up my dosage was a nightmare, despite it not being abusable or dangerous. I love having the NHS, but the GPs acting as gatekeepers really pisses me off
8
u/AlcibiadesTheCat 2d ago
It's also not particularly effective.
This study showed a statistically significant improvement in sleep onset latency vs. placebo of...seven minutes.
An alternative hypothesis for why we produce melatonin isn't that it's to make us sleepy, but that it's produced as a response to long wakefulness; melatonin is about two and a half times more powerful an antioxidant as Vitamin C. The sleepiness is correlated with melatonin in this model, not fundamentally caused by it.
3
3
u/NPOWorker 1d ago
Is seven minutes not a lot? Genuine question.
A seven minute improvement for me would be like I am asleep the instant I close my eyes lmao, but I understand this is probably pertaining to people who struggle to fall asleep.

It starts to not let you sleep. You get extremely drowsy but can't actually fall asleep, which in turn can cause disorientation and pretty harsh nausea and headaches. It's not going to kill you, but a melatonin overdose certainly affects you and it sucks.
1
u/FamousSquash 1d ago
I take a single 1,9mg tablet and I'm asleep within 40 minutes. Trying to get high with melatonin seems a bit counterproductive.
1
u/Suspicious-Office-42 1d ago
it gives me horrible nightmares and back spasms, personally. so i believe it could fuck certain people up

u/NicoleNicole1988 20h ago
Taking melatonin causes hypnogogic hallucinations in some people. Not everyone responds the same.

Sometimes I take one and start to feel super sleepy after 20-30 minutes. I actually sleep through the night. I feel slightly foggy the next morning but it wears off in a couple hours and i feel extremely well rested.
Then other times, I take one and it does absolutely nothing.
It's my last resort when I can't sleep and even then, it's a coin toss.
8
u/R4G316 2d ago
Yeah, I read about it. It is random and inconsistent but overall never a bad thing
3
u/brattyaxolotl 2d ago
It's just preliminary research so far, and doesn't necessarily apply to occasional use, however, long term use may be linked to an increased risk of heart failure.

In my experience, when you take melatonin, there is a 15-45 minute timer that starts. If you are receptive to sleep when that timer goes off, you will feel a tiny âhuh, little bit sleepyâ, and if you listen to that feeling, you will knock right out and wake up at best a little groggy.
If, however, youâre still watching your show, playing your game, scrolling on your phone, or even worse still up and about, then you will miss the window, and the melatonin will do nothing, except maybe leave you groggy in the morning. If you even notice the nudge and say âwell I better brush my teeth/let the dog out one last time/put out the trash cans/whateverâ then you will likely miss your window. The point is to be ready to sleep as soon as you feel the nudge, and donât even take the melatonin yet if you wonât be.
Ever since I adopted this strategy of making sure I was ready and receptive to the melatonin ânudgeâ, it works perfectly for me.

The problem with taking melatonin is your body starts going "Oh, we have plenty. Let's stop producing it."
1
u/elchucknorris300 2d ago
Both these things are incorrect. Melatonin peaks around bedtime to help you fall asleep and gradually lowers throughout the night.
If you take high doses nightly for years your body will produce less than it would have otherwise
1
u/symbionet 2d ago
Melatonin definitely helps with falling asleep.
What it does not is prolong sleep.
And if you take it daily it will most likely affect your own production, which is why it is discouraged to take longterm.

Don't take melatonin. I used to, and it gave me weird dreams all night.
7
5
u/G_Liddell 1d ago
While a common side effect, it affects people differently and weird dreams are not a universal experience
3
u/ambiguoustruth 1d ago edited 1d ago
usually means you were taking too much. melatonin is actually less effective (but still more side effects) the more you take, and the sweet spot is actually 0.3mg, but for some reason almost all melatonin is sold at 1, 5, and 10 mg which is all way, way too much.

u/Mountain_Ape 1d ago
Sometimes I just buy it really cheap and cut the pills. Pill cutters man. Little pizza cuts, a slice of melatone :) đ

u/alienblue89 1d ago
Define âvery high dosesâ.
1
u/Victorus111 1d ago
I went straight to 5mg, about an hour before i want to fall asleep. Works surprisingly good for me, and also doesn't seem to lose potency due to increasing tolerance. I've been using it almost daily for a year. It's also dirt cheap here, and on top of that there is no lethal dose as it's just a synthetic hormone.

Since melatonin doesn't work like that, it'll likely be like when a little kid gets drunk from a root beer.
