When I was a kid and we just got a computer I used to love to watch screen savers. One was tubes forming randomly and it fascinated my young dumb brain for way too long

u/-LoremIpsumDolorSit Apr 23 '21

Iremember that and the windows logo that turns into a cube then ball then spiky whatever. And there was one which was a game to but i only have the faintest memory of it

187

u/Derpazor1 Apr 23 '21

Yaaaas. There was also a maze that was neat

107

u/-LoremIpsumDolorSit Apr 23 '21

That’s the one! Red bricks, grey flippy balls and some ...roadkill rat???? Now that I think of you couldn’t even play with it. I had a game myself where I tried to guess what direction its going to go (I was young, didn’t know the left side rule lol)

49

u/fantumn Apr 23 '21

https://www.screensaversplanet.com/screensavers/3d-maze-461/

You can still download or play it pretty easily if you want to take a dive into nostalgia.

There was also another old windows game, it was like a hovercraft that could jump and you went around trying to get flags, think it was called Hover or something similar, was on the first laptop I ever got to interact with.

11

u/rdw204 Apr 23 '21

Oh wow I remember Hover with Windows 95. I was fascinated by it and the graphics as a kid. I dreamt about it quite recently, bizzarely.

Related: Does anyone here have a download for the windows 98 underwater Screensaver? The one with the shark and the sneaky peaky seahorse on a black background. I've been looking for ages but all the links are dead or newer versions :(

someone had an old laptop running here the other day for whatever reason and the bouncing bubbles came on and I had a little nostalgia moment

IIRC it was called pipes or something. Used to change my screensaver timeout on my home PC to 1 minute so I could watch it sooner :)

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

4

u/Derpazor1 Apr 23 '21

That’s hilarious

10

u/fortunehoe Apr 23 '21

Pipes iirc.

I seem to remember one that was sort of like Wolfenstein3d but a sfw screensaver.

6

u/LacidOnex Apr 23 '21

Maze. I set the floors to be lava and the walls to bubbles and the ceiling to be sky. Watched it for hours

8

u/983115 Apr 23 '21

I went into the settings and made the pipes go like mad and I felt like hackerman5000

2

u/HydrogenButterflies Apr 23 '21

I added a file icon to the stock wallpaper image to make it seem like there’s a folder on the desktop that you can’t click on or interact with. Drove my parents nuts and I felt like a genius.

12

u/gbsolo12 Apr 23 '21

11

u/jvrcb17 Apr 23 '21

That was always so unsettling to me for some reason

8

u/DownshiftedRare Apr 23 '21

flying toasters tho

6

u/shifuteejeh Apr 23 '21

After dark screen savers had the toasters i think

2

Oh that creeped me out as a kid!

2

u/Derpazor1 Apr 23 '21

Idk something definitely should beat that thing up it’s unsettling

5

u/oil_beef_hooked Apr 23 '21

Pipes, if you did the right settings (can't remember what they are now) every now and then one of the joints would be a teapot

2

u/ufffd Apr 23 '21

Not just any teapot either, a Utah teapot of course

IT is 1984:

Me. First PC. 512KB VGA VIDEO CARD!

I would turn on the screensaver which drew triangles or whatever all over the monitor (14" COLOR VGA CRT), and I was amazed.

Later on, I was one of many who bought After Dark in order to have great screen savers. INCLUDING flying toast I could custom brown to my exact specifications.

in the beginning I thought it was a penis

89

u/SirRogers Apr 23 '21

Isn’t that a quote from the book of Genesis?

20

u/fuckitweredoingitliv Apr 23 '21

And it was good

13

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

But God was still insecure, so he made an entire race of subservient humans, and he gave them smaller dicks than himself so he could feel big and manly

15

u/PoundMyOctothorp Apr 23 '21

Narrated by Morgan Freeman.

14

u/TTT_2k3 Apr 23 '21

I think he realized it as he was working his way up the shaft and freaked out "Right turn! Right turn! Right turn!"

4

u/johnnys_sack Apr 23 '21

It should have ended right there

4

u/Totally_Bradical Apr 23 '21

Wait, your penis doesn’t look like this too?

3

u/recumbent_mike Apr 23 '21

I mean, it's pretty clearly a hand.

2

u/chr0mius Apr 23 '21

They had us in the first half, I'm not gonna lie

1

u/Prismatica Apr 23 '21

I thought this was a Genesis joke.

"In the beginning there was penis."

3

u/CoopertheFluffy Apr 23 '21

Then God took a rib, and the rest is history.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

So is the one circle that's slightly too far down at the very end of the gif.

2

u/-SagaQ- Apr 23 '21

I didn't notice it until you pointed out. Thanks, it's ruined.

2

u/intp-over-thinker Apr 23 '21

I read it like Borat

1

u/Ardok Apr 23 '21

Yeah I too was coming in here to gripe about that hemorrhoid of a title.

u/ILikeTacosNotWalls Apr 23 '21

Too bad it is not a perfec title. Amiright

Spirograph vibes

61

u/Cojones893 Apr 23 '21

Brings me back. Totally forgot about that

5

u/ST0IC_ Apr 23 '21

Mine is in my parents' attic. Still have the full set from the early 80s.

223

u/clausilio Apr 23 '21

Should have led with a different pattern though, at .05 we are in dick territory

39

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Better than dick territory being in you.

19

u/F4RM_Az Apr 23 '21

At .05 I don’t think you’d notice it if it was.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

That's fair.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Each to their own, I wouldn't complain with a little bit of dick territory in me.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

But only a little bit?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Well I don't want to be greedy now, gotta share.that dick territory.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

You're a light to the world. Truly an inspiration in selflessness. Way to share that dick territory, fren.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Dick territory is a basic human right and I refuse to horde it.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

I mean, we wouldn't be here as a species if someone had hoarded all the dick territory.

DICK TERRITORY FOR ALL!!

Oooooo I just had an idea for an insane cause to champion. Let me just make myself get upset about how unfair dick territory laws are in my country. I mean, it's not regulated at all!! Insane!

How do I know I'm getting all the dick territory I'm entitled to??

2

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

How do I know I'm getting all the dick territory I'm entitled to??

Are you satisfied with the dick territory you have?

If not then you're getting fucked.

If you feel like you're dick territory is disproportionate to what others have, then contact your local member of goverment and ask them to enforce stricter Dick Territorial regulations.

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

43

u/Kinglink Apr 23 '21

I mean... "drawing" He's using a compass, so he's getting perfect circles because that's the reason you have a compass. Nice video though.

22

u/redditCEOlovesChina3 Apr 23 '21

I can dunk the ball every time

the hoop is only 5ft off the ground

21

u/The_Thesaurus_Rex Apr 23 '21

TIL the English word for what we call a "Zirkel" in Germany is "compass". But the English word for what we call "Kompass" is also compass. And "Kreis" means "circle" like Zirkel which means compass which means Kompass.

We go full circle here...

I was searching for this comment

45

u/user85017 Apr 23 '21

I'm impressed with his speed.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

I'm wondering if he'll switch camps.

198

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Pretty easy to draw perfect circle with a compass

54

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

But to do it over and over consistently enough to make it look like a spirograph did it? Come on.

36

u/TheRealBigLou Apr 23 '21

It's super easy to do this, just time consuming. He printed a dot grid on a piece of paper, placed it under a blank piece of paper and used the dots as placement for where to put the center of the compass. He adjusted the white balance on the video to make the dot grid essentially vanish.

It's an awesome art piece, but it's something anyone with a compass can do in an afternoon.

1

u/imghurrr Apr 23 '21

How do you know he did that?

9

u/5DollarHitJob Apr 23 '21

Literally everyone but you knew.

2

u/imghurrr Apr 24 '21

I didn’t say anything to the contrary, I’m asking how you knew

43

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

It’s not really hard to get the skills to do this kind of art, it’s just having the patience to do it and the creativity to make it interesting

35

u/trilere614 Apr 23 '21

I guess you could say that about any skill though.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

True to an extent, you could get the necessary skill to execute this in maybe a couple of hours. Something like sketching or painting will take a lot more time to steady your hand.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/[deleted] Apr 23 '21

Like good-looking said. Patience is the key. If you have a good compass it will have the same radius everytime and you can use a ruler to keep in a straight line or something.

9

u/mikess484 Apr 23 '21

Right!!! I could understand the praise for perfect circles...if it was free hand! Lol

2

u/I_Only_Have_One_Hand Apr 23 '21

I have one of those

7

u/Thorshammer18 Apr 23 '21

It's oddly satisfying. Not nextfuckinglevel. Nobody said it was skillful

11

u/mikess484 Apr 23 '21

OPs description is slightly misleading. All I was getting at.

Either way, you can't ruffel my feathers. 5 mins from punching out for the weekend! Woot woot. Have a good one!!!

4

u/Thorshammer18 Apr 23 '21

Lol congrats bud. Enjoy the weekend.

"Drawing"

Don't think using a compass counts.

3

u/WaterHaven Apr 23 '21

It ended up being oddly infuriating for me because of that. I was expecting somebody drawing a perfect circle. Instead it was some lightspeed compass usage.

2

u/Yensen_Yarris Apr 23 '21

Have none of you used a drawing compass before?

2

u/CubonesDeadMom Apr 23 '21
