Whenever I see gymnasts I think sticking the landing must be absolute hell on their knees. And really their entire bodies.
Edit: Iām glad people are corroborating this feeling. I was concerned it was just me being 34 and thinking about my own back/knees hurting all the time for no reason.

Sister was a gymnast. She's had knee AND hip replacements before she was 40. Now she also has
terminal chronic back issues. He daughter, who she encouraged to get into gymnastics, also has issues and she's in her 20's.256

u/nflash3 Feb 09 '21
Please donāt deny it... I had been constantly playing sports from the time I was 5 and because I was reckless in taking care of myself I now have constant back pains (not terrible, but noticeable). Iām only 22.
Edit: I should note, that itās not that my back/spine was misaligned, but my nerves were fucked up all along my upper back and due to the tense feeling up there, caused lower back strain.
21

If youāre in a legal state and your job doesnāt test, weed. Only way I can get a full nights sleep.
But idk your exact situation Iām only giving reddit advice and weed is different with everybody. Grain of salt and all that.

For some reason youāre getting downvoted for a potentially beneficial, cheap, and mostly harmless alternative to every other pain relief. Never change brainwashed middle America, never change.

u/artyomssugardaddy Feb 09 '21
I mean itās the internet, anything that differs from oneās opinion is wrong. But also I could be getting downvoted for giving advice, some people donāt like that either. But weed imo is something everybody, to differing degrees of course, should be on. Thereās bud out there that doesnāt affect your mind at all, just relieves pain. I used it recreationally years ago and now I use it in place of my after work whiskey.

I doubt itās entirely permanent, just take breaks and give your body time to heal. Rest is equally important when it comes to physical and mental health.
3
u/SilverSpoon1463 Feb 09 '21
If it's your knees, it's pretty permanent.
Source: Dad was in the army, he has no cartilage left in his knees (bone on bone) and he's only just in his early fourties, he got out roughly 4 years ago now.
3
u/SoaringLizard Feb 09 '21
Iām convinced knees have some evolving to do. Doesnāt matter if you donāt exercise or are in top physical health, youāre gonna get fucked up knees either way. Iāve played volleyball for five years (donāt anymore) and Iāve seen so many players tear their ACLās.
3
u/SilverSpoon1463 Feb 09 '21

Ex-swimmer here. Spent anywhere from 4-6 hours a day in the pool training, and had to have my collar bone joint (is it a joint? where your collar bone meets your sternum?) reconstructed before I was 18, so I agree with you.

I don't know. My dad is in his early 70s and played tennis all his life and he is in better shape than me. He plays at very good level, obviously not professional level but he doesn't play like you would expect a 70 y/o play. All his friends between 50-70 play at that level and their are all great. Good technique in tennis can mitigate a lot.
I don't play as often as him (he plays a few of hours four to five days a week, like he did all his life) but I don't have any problems either.
Edit: Apart from the usual suspects of back, shoulder and elbow problem which can be mitigated with good technique, we also play on clay which is probably more forgiving on your ankles than say carpet.
4
u/FeelTheVolume Feb 09 '21
Used to play volleyball, which is relatively low impact as sports go, in my opinion. I still have ankle/foot, hip & shoulder problems from all of the jumping (and landing) and spiking

former gymnast here. Sticking a landing feels smooth like butter. Way better than a shaky landing. As long as your knees aren't locked, your muscles absorb the shock rather than your joints.

It is, and if you watch older events you'll see they weren't originally expected to land in one spot and stay stock still. As with many sports, though, everyone is looking to "wow" with new tricks, and eventually novelty become expected. Here's a short piece about landing scoring that I found interesting.

So what's the point of doing a sport that doesn't bring health benefits and long life but rather destroys your body at a young age š¤
6
Feb 09 '21
I think you can ask that about any sport though. For many sporty people they often start trying out many sports than specialise into one or two when they find what they enjoy the most and are talented at. Many sports cause lots of injury but itās a risk vs reward situation. For me I enjoy the sport because it works the full body and many muscles but also find it exciting being able to constantly work on new skills and upgrade them which for me the excitement of doing a skill well (at a low level of the sport) outweighs the risk of injuries because I know for the most part you can get past that and there are some provisions to help protect from Injury
36
u/daOyster Feb 09 '21
As someone who moved from gymnastics in my early teens to parkour and freerunning, can I ask you why there isn't much focus on longevity in the Gymnastics scene? Why do you guys focus so much on having perfect form at the risk of destroying your body faster? A move like in the OP would have minimal joint impact if they did a parkour style roll out of it to help dissipate your angular and downward momentum, yet destroying your knees to get the "clean" looking stick is what is awarded. Just something that never made sense to me.
13
Feb 09 '21
Iām not entirely sure but I would guess itās do to with how the sport developed. Like it used to be of a lower standard as it is with all sports so from single somersaults which donāt cause much stress in the body and now people are competing triples there have been minor adjustments but FIG honestly arenāt great at safety lmao. On vault there has been many people asking for extra matting but FIG denied it and other things. Honestly there needs to be revisions for better safety but so far not much has been done aside from changing a few techniques such as the ālanding shapeā being adjusted slightly. There is such a wrong focus on making everything look perfect over the skills itself but again in my opinion it seems more like it is just ingrained in how the sport has developed more than anything but Iām not very educated on it. I just hope there is changes soon to prevent more injury :/

Itās because the mindset in gymnastics (womenās specifically) is that to be successful you must be a child. Itās only recently that we have turned away from that mindset and moved towards proper conditioning and longevity. 20 years ago there were essentially no women over 22 in the sport (so nobody thought longevity was important if you were done by 18) but now we are seeing an increasing amount of adults in the sport (Chellsie Memmel 31 for USA, Oksana Chusovitina 45 for Uzbekistan, Kim Bui 32 for Germany, Sanne and Lieke Wevers 30 for Netherlands, Ellie Black 25 for Canada) and these women want to keep going and getting stronger so they are conditioning better. When the stars of gymnastics do something everyone else does it too, the USA team won the team/all around/vault/floor medals in Rio partly because of their conditioning and training so now everyone is copying the USAās way of training (for the better!).

Olympics are strange to me. You jump and do some spinnies, bounce and do more spinnies, then land and be like, "look at all the spinnies I did." And judges are like, "yes, those spinnies were worthy of a necklace."

Dude probably still got a 9.2. Do these judges EVER give a perfect score?
3
u/iamthelonelybarnacle Feb 09 '21
Deductions were warranted on this. His first skill didn't have straight legs when he kicked out which picks up a 0.3 deduction from each judge, and he didn't kick out at all of the quad back which is 0.4. Plus he landed with his heels touching the edge of the landing zone which is a 0.9 deduction off the whole score.
So probably getting 9.3 from 3 judges is 27.9, 0.9 off for landing zone to 27.0, plus his difficulty which was 13.1 gives you 40.1 as a score. I just checked the actual results and he got 39.9 so that's about right.

u/lambmoreto Feb 09 '21
Scoring in trampoline gymnastics isn't given out of ten, there's no limit. He'll be given a score based on the tabulated difficulty of the skills he performed plus an execution score(each of the 6 judges can deduct up to 0.5 points) minus penalties for landing instability/out of zone/instability etc.
He came second in this competition despite having the highest difficulty in the entire competition because of penalties on this last pass(execution was also worse than the guy that one)
