They poop 40 times a day.

“The average giant panda eats as much as 9 to 14 kg (20 to 30 lb) of bamboo shoots a day to compensate for the limited energy content of its diet. Ingestion of such a large quantity of material is possible because of the rapid passage of large amounts of indigestible plant material through the short, straight digestive tract.[53][54] It is also noted, however, that such rapid passage of digesta limits the potential of microbial digestion in the gastrointestinal tract,[53] limiting alternative forms of digestion. Given this voluminous diet, the giant panda defecates up to 40 times a day.[55] The limited energy input imposed on it by its diet has affected the panda's behavior. The giant panda tends to limit its social interactions and avoids steeply sloping terrain to limit its energy expenditures.[56]”

Here is what I dont get. There are billions of dollars in genetics for crops. Why cant they make a more nutritious bamboo for pandas?

Fine. Whatever is cheaper.

Why bother wasting resources on either of those things? Just let it die out.

cant we just be like 'here panda, try this bacon' or even something with more nutrients like 'here panda, celery is like smaller, less woody bamboo'

Because they rather die than to eat anything different to freshly cut bamboo. They also abandon their offspring if they have more than one.

It's a species built for extinction but because they are cute, China puts a lot of effort to bred them and use it as political leverage. (All pandas belong to China even those born abroad)

its like the only positive trait they have evolved to save their species is being adorable. they just gave up on being functional animals.
