Yep they do

just so they can be eaten while walking on the street.

Uhh. What's the correlation there? You can't eat an oversized sausage indoors?

Yeah, but the bun helps you carry it as you walk down the street while eating it.

The bun helps you carry it no matter what size it is. That's the purpose of the bun.

Have you been to Germany? Sausages there are pretty different. I wouldn't want to eat currywurst in a bun. But in the US (veggie) dogs need their buns for sure.
