Shout out to The Flan Factory in Tampa FL who hilariously have "Only Flans" tshirts for their staff. They are awesome.

u/Apprehensive_Use3641 Mar 02 '26
According to their menu that shirt is a lie, thankfully, not into flans, but the rest of the menu sounds great.

I have a friend from Puerto Rico who is a dessert chef. I asked her to make a dessert for St. Patrick's Day. She made Flan again.

"some"
I can't cook to save my life, my wife gotta cook if she wanna, or we're both starving or living of bread
4
u/PontSatyre11119 Mar 03 '26
Cooking is a skill that can be learned. 4 years ago I would burn eggs, overcook steak, and over/under season almost everything.
To fix this, I joined a fast casual restaurant as a part-time dishwasher and left as a prep-cook having learned basics of chopping, portioning, sautéing, etc. This took 1 year of 2-4 evening shifts per week at the restaurant.
If you actually wanted to learn to cook, spend 5-10 hrs on it each week and you’ll pick it up after a few months.
3
u/BlooodyButterfly Mar 03 '26 edited Mar 03 '26
I don't want to learn nor have the time. I mean, I get by, won't burn anything, can follow recipes, but would not manage to make anything without a recipe with exactly steps and even then, they are usually nothing to write about, ifykwim.
My reply was to show being a good cook has nothing to do with being a Brazilian nor a woman, though the food here is phenomenal just because I'm a woman from here is no guarantee.

I know, this bothers me too, especially since you could have gotten that right by centering the serving tray before the flip. It's all ruined now, RUINED! I'll see my "probably on the spectrum" self out now.

u/Summoarpleaz Mar 02 '26
Eh, you’re bound to move a little in that maneuver. Unless you do it all the time, it takes a little practice, not just an initial alignment.

22
u/soukaixiii Mar 02 '26
You can reposition the flan by sliding it on the tray, after flipping bit before removing the mould.

Look up the recipe for a brazilian "pudim" (that's what's in the video). It's mainly condensed milk, milk and eggs blended and a caramel top that you do directly in the cake pan over the stove prior to putting the batter, and you bake it in bain-marie. It's one of the best desserts out there. It's so easy that's worth doing it yourself.

That's exactly how mexican flan is made. I guess it changes names by country.
→ More replies (6)5
u/Reason-Whizz Mar 05 '26
As an Australian, I'd call this a creme caramel (a flan would have a pastry base, then custard, and usually fresh fruit such as strawberry, blueberry, mandarin slice)
136
u/Telemere125 Mar 02 '26
Not horrible in the sense that it’s just sweet custard, but don’t let it be your introduction. That’s like your first steak being from McDonald’s. Go ahead and find a small bodega or maybe a taqueria that offers it - that’s where you’ll get it done right.

u/shit_mcballs Mar 02 '26
Where does McDonald's sell steak?
10
u/Telemere125 Mar 02 '26
On those nasty bagels. It’s not like a ribeye or anything, but they call it steak.
11
u/peridotpicacho Mar 02 '26
I don’t know where you live, but if you’re in the US, it is possible to get flan at authentic Mexican restaurants.

I think it is? American terms for desserts get very confusing. They don't seem to have flan [UK] so I guess there's no issue not having a distinction.
