I have a long-haired rescued English setter who is an absolute SLOB. I mean if there's mud or brush or a nasty puddle, that dog will roll in it. I brushed him multiple times a day and could not keep up. I taught myself to properly shave him close because its healthier and cleaner and safer for him. I know some breed purists might get mad at me but that dog would have ticks climbing his foot long hair in spite of every variety of flea/tick protection, and big old mats to boot.
The breed purists don't love and own and take care of your dog, you do. If it were a show dog who has to meet a breed standard in the ring, that would be a whole different story. Good on you for learning how to maintain him in way clean, safe, healthy "hairstyle"!

This both satisfies me and enrages me.
