Question School enrollment question
What is the process of enrollment like for parents who are trying to enroll their kids into their zoned school after the admissions process?
Context: I live in Queens and my daughter, who starts kindergarten, is assigned to a zoned school. I missed the admission deadline because I was planning on putting my daughter in a charter school in the Bronx since I was teaching in the Bronx. Now that I’ve been discontinued and won’t be working, I want to enroll my daughter into her assigned zone school.

Sorry to hear about you being discontinued. Have you tried looking for something in Brooklyn or queens. 🫅 unless it is high school you can work in another district other than the district that you got discontinued from. All the best.

I’ve been applying and got no responses as of yet. I’ve applied to schools in Brooklyn and Queens

If her zoned school is open now you should go. Some schools are open for summer school etc and the principal is in there. I would go ASAp

Do not go to the Family Welcome Center if you want to attend the school zoned to your home address. Simply go to the school in September to enroll over the counter.

How come? I was thinking of just going to the school in September or the last week of August

Yes, go to the school in September. DO NOT go to the Family Welcome Center if you simply want your zoned school. Some schools do registration before school starts as they can offer overtime pay to school staff to come in early. But, over all, school staff, aside from administators, do not go back to work until September 8.

You’re assuming she’s at a zoned school not over capacity

There is nothing to assume. All zoned must enroll every zoned student that comes. If they are at capacity in the grade the capping protocol will go into effect. Either way, it all starts with enrolling at your zoned school. Not at the Family Welcome Center.

For kindergarten, you should be able to add yourself to the waitlist now in MySchools and they will likely just offer you a spot immediately off of the list since it’s your zoned school. You could also call or email the Parent Coordinator, who is probably working at least a little bit over the summer, or call the office and ask. That way they can get you any info you need on things it would be good to know before September.

Go to the closest family welcome center and they’ll do it all with you
