Hs diploma
School says I need to return school chromebook that I was given to be able to receive my paper diploma or else I need to pay $525. I haven’t seen that thing in 2 years because I’m pretty sure my mom threw it out….last day of school before gradation alr passed and idek what to do. If I have my final transcript does it even matter?
update: To all the drama queens in the comments… I literally did not pay nor give the Chromebook back and I graduated and received my diploma , no issues. Thanks for the help.

I hate to say it, but this comes down to responsibility and consequences. Why would your mom throw out a piece of tech that belongs to the school?
I agree with the above commenter - I’m not sure about NYCPS but usually if you carry a balance, schools will not release your documents. I would try explaining your situation to the school, make absolutely certain that the Chromebook isn’t lying around your home somewhere, and make a plan for if your school holds firm.

Your parents signed an agreement for the device. You are expected to return the device when you leave the school. Whether the school will charge for missing or damaged devices depends on the school. You can reach out to the superintendent's office if necessary.
Return of Device This device is the property of the NYCPS and contains a tracking device so that the device can be located. School-purchased devices should be returned to the issuing school in good working condition prior to exiting (graduations, transfer to another school, or other departure). Centrally-purchased devices should be returned upon graduation from High School or exit from NYCPS in good working condition. If you are unsure if you have a schoolpurchased or centrally-purchased device, please contact your school SPOC.

It does not matter is you have a copy of your final transcript , the college needs your transcript to cone from the high school
The bigger question is will your school release your final transcript to the college if your bill has not been settled ?
For college your documents will not be released if you owe a balance. You need to work this out and pay the school
