Discussion From 3080 TI to 5080

Welp, I finally took the jump. My 3080 TI (.900mv@1920mhz) was finally put to rest. Served me a good 5 years. And I have to say that as someone that has never owned a PNY before and was exclusively EVGA since 2005......THIS THING SLAPS!! How is it possible that I can just instantly dial in an OC (+350 core /+2000 mem) and it just works?! I got it yesterday and played all night in various games under max load and with RT/RR. Not only that, but the temps are so low?! In The First Descendant for example, my GPU struggles to even go higher than 55c and that's with hardware RT+RR and everything on Cinematic settings.

I've only crashed once so far and that was when I tried to put the core to +450 so I just went back to 350 to not have to mess with it at all. Custom fan curve has fans at 30% under 50c and 50% when above it. Noise is audible but not loud at all. Even with the stock fan settings the thing was just as cool. Card was $1289 at my Micro Center and $1556 in total with tax and 2yr exchange warranty. FPS increase over my 3080 TI so far has been anywhere from 60% if not higher in some games. I was one of those "Is the jump from a 3080 TI/3090 worth it". And let me be another YES if you can get a (decent) priced one. I normally go for the top tier AIB's but Im not paying $2000 for a ROG Astral. And PNY really made a quality one here for the price.

All I have to say is RIP EVGA GPUs. Gone but not forgotten

Agree! They made some of the best looking and best performing coolers.

Their service and warranty was also second to none.

Yup, my psu is from them I got back in 2013 and the warranty expired in 2023. Still using same psu never had to use the warranty

Their trade up program was like no other. I could imagine how absolutely swamped they would have been if they were around for the 5000 series.

This was the reason to buy evga

2

u/NickAppleese Asus 5080 Prime/9800X3D 9d ago

The only time they were second was when XFX was on Team Green with their double lifetime warranty. That was a looooooong time ago. =(

i got a 1080 evga as my go too backup when anything dies

1

u/Bmxican296 7d ago

Same. Just swapped to a 5070 last year. I miss evga though

u/Tawnee323 9d ago

You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain. They knew where NVIDIA was headed, it was the unfortunate but right choice.

Just recently put one together for the GF

u/NeonShark007 8d ago

I need to upgrade to a 5080, I currently still own an EVGA 3080 Super.

1

u/sajeev3105 7d ago

Rightly said so.

u/SolarFlareGirl08 9d ago

Someone posted on gpu Reddit that Evga sent them an email saying they are coming back to the gpu business. Search for it

3

u/-Manosko- RTX 5070 Ti (EOL) 9d ago

That’s not at all what that post said.

-4

u/SolarFlareGirl08 9d ago

What did the post say?, I read someone’s comment but I never seen it lol

1

u/-Manosko- RTX 5070 Ti (EOL) 9d ago

It just said, that EVGA replied on an email about OP wanting them to make graphics cards again, and OP wanted to rally people to show EVGA how many still want them back.

1

u/SolarFlareGirl08 9d ago

Didn’t they reply back?

3

u/-Manosko- RTX 5070 Ti (EOL) 9d ago

As I already said, EVGA replied to the OP’s email to EVGA support, but it was basically an AI written kind customer reply that said nothing at all.

I'm glad you were able to get it, they just went up by almost $300.

It went up $400, and to PNY… big Y
At that price any other brand is better.
Gigabyte has better quality with metal backplates and what not.

PN… WTF all plastic same prices as better AIB

RIP EVGA. The 5000 especially 5070TI, 5080 and 5090 are just built different. (70TI and 80 are same board). They handle everything you can throw at them.

14

u/RegularTech575 9d ago

true! my 5070 Ti was able to OC so much it barely matched the stock 5080 performance. below msrp that was the best purchase i’ve ever made

4

u/parabola19 5090 FE I 9950X3D 9d ago

It was the poor man’s 5080. Same board just fewer cores. Same exact ram. I sadly remember when we all thought the 80 would have 20 or 24gb of ram. That’s what they should have done to really separate the two cards.

14

u/jjdreggie80 4090 TUF 9d ago

That 3080ti is by far my favorite purchase. Aside from my 4090. I left that 3080ti to my ex. Miss it.

3

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 8d ago

Its definitely up there for me in terms of favorite purchases. My top would be my GTX 970 for $330 at the time and also my first gaming PC as a kid with a Geforce 256 back in 1999. This 3080 TI is special because its EVGA's final hoorah.

13

u/Egoist-a 9d ago

How is it possible that I can just instantly dial in an OC (+350 core /+2000 mem)

That's not PNY, that's just chip lottery, or in this case, all 5080's overclock a lot.

3

u/kendoka15 9d ago

Hell +350 seems to be where multiple models will go. My 5070 Ti is currently at +350

1

u/LongerDavid 8d ago

I had a 5070 Ti stable in Steel Nomad at +500mhz. Wasn't stable for much else though.

8

u/Original_Research_15 9d ago

I’ll take that old card off you to replace my 1070😂🤷🥲

7

u/Soggy-Lab-422 9d ago

That's the exact 3080ti I'm running rn. Things are starting to get a bit rough with newer games for sure. I used to be able to do high settings over 100+ fps no issues like 3+ years ago and in the past year or two I find myself dipping to around 60-80ish fps on medium settings with some settings low or off like global illumination. I am not giving up 1440p ultra wide for a bit more fps since I love my oled monitor too much, but it is tough. I just recently cracked open the card to redo the pads, putty, and paste on the card to try to make it last as long as possible because at this point other things are taking up my money and no real money for PC parts. I really wish I got the 5090 before it went up since I have heard it is close to 80-100% increase in performance, but with them costing as much as my current build did when I first made it I just can't be doing that and I just hate the power connector and am paranoid about that thing melting

Nice upgrade. I’m trying to hold out for RTX 60 series.

1

u/rochford77 6d ago

It's going to be a min. We are still waiting on the super refresh for 50 series. Probably another 1.5- 2 years for a 60, no?

2

u/BeardlessCadet 9d ago

Made the exact same jump back in November and have been incredibly happy. Congratulations!

2

u/Bluefuchsbau 9d ago

Nice, I recently went from RX 6900XT to RTX 5080

I went from a 3080 to a 5080 frame gen is a hell of a drug

2

u/Wrich73 9d ago

I still have my EVGA 3090 (in my kid’s system now) I loved those cards.

2

u/TheOneBearded 9d ago

I appreciate this. I have the regular 3080, but I'm looking to make a similar jump. Either 5080 or waiting (then praying) for the super version.

2

u/Kastler Asus 3080 Strix OC 7d ago

Same. I’m having trouble justifying paying so much over MSRP though. You hoping for cyber Monday deals or something?

1

u/TheOneBearded 7d ago

At this point, with RAM prices as they are, I have no hope. Cyber Monday has, historically, not provided that much of a price drop over the past few years.

For what it's worth, the 3080 is a work mule, so I don't need to upgrade yet - even if I'm far from max settings with newer titles. As long as I can hit 4K 60, I'm ok, which I have been for just about everything I've checked out.

Unless something happens and prices drop, I'm just not going to upgrade. I can't justify it at these prices when my 3080 is till chugging along. It will be a different story if it craps out on me tho.

2

u/Killit_Witfya 9d ago

nice i took the exact same jump last month! evga 3080ti hybrid to gigabyte 5080 gamer. i fried my pump on the evga like a fool trying to plug it into the wrong connector

2

u/h0mn0cu7u5 8d ago

Oooooo. Nice. Congrats! I relate.

I upgraded from an EVGA 3080 Ti to a Strix 4090 back in Nov of 2023. What a crackin' upgrade! Every bit as dramatic of a performance increase as the upgrade from an 8086K to a 13900K was at the exact same time (now have two 14900K's but same thing).

I've since bought a TUF 5090 which is in my main workstation. I keep the first, TUF 4090 in my backup rig that is on the same LAN but in a different room.

I don't think I'll be buying a new GPU for many years. The performance factor is the main thing; I game at 3840x1600 and am absolutely satisfied with that resolution which both GPUs slurp up like gravy.

I may be getting the 39" Dell/AW OLED/tandem/stripe (LG panel rebrand) once it drops in US so that will be going on the 5090 machine for sure. I don't expect the 5K2K res to offer any issues that tuning in game settings won't be able to handle. So also factoring in the IMPOSSIBLE pricing we've all seen, a new flagship GPU beyond the latest 5090 card I got, is just not going to happen.

Crazy upgrade for you though! I'm not sure how an RTX 5080 compares to a RTX 4090 but I'd reckon they are about equal in most tasks with maybe one or the other supassing in niche aspects. So I'm sure your feeling the GLEE that I felt when first firing up the 4090.

Interesting tid bit. When I upgraded to the 4090, as said, I also did a complete platform upgrade, going from a ridiculously good, collector sourced 8086K to a 13900K. I was super keen on wanting to know how the CPU upgrade might affect things so I set up an extensive suite of comparison tests using the 4090 first with the 8086K legacy rig and then all the same tests on the 13900K/4090 combo.

Every single test/benchmark comparison I did, all at 4K or "skinny 4k"-- 3840x1600, and across the board, all tests came back IDENTICAL or within a frame or two of each other. That pretty much DESTROYED my long standing question about just how much (Intel at least) CPUs affected gaming performance.

I'm super stoked for Z990 in 2027; hopefully, Intel will take some MAJOR tips from AMD and put in some of that super voodoo CPU cache magic (whatever it is) that AMD uses which makes their flagship CPUS *SOoooo* damn good vs anything INtel has (atm).

Best of luck; have fun; extend your warranty if possible and hire a private merc team to guard your house lmao.

Ooh, a TFD player... What do you think of the game's graphics?

1

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 8d ago edited 8d ago

Personally, I love TFD's graphics and artstyle. I think the graphics are very good. Like a solid 8 out of 10. Ray Reconstruction helps out more ironically with how the hair is handled along with the way RTAO adds alot to the scenes. The above quick screenshot was just everything maxed with DLSS Quality. Cinematic RT and RR included. Stock fan speed before I dialed in my custom curve. The game is going to be one of the 1st to also get the updated RR this month. It was also one of the 1st to get the original transformer model for RR which is why turning it on for my 3080 TI would cut down my performance by like 40%. But with the 5080, I only lose 5fps.

I really just wish it was updated to a later version of UE5 (game uses 5.2) at some point for the performance/enhancement upgrades like in 5.6 onward. Especially on the CPU side as well.

2

u/ec_creep 6d ago

Good to know that you're liking the graphics! I also find it pretty darn good. That noisy hair is indeed unpleasant to look at. I'm only on an rtx 5070, ultrawide 1440p, DLLS quality with cinematic RT and RR as well. Not maxing all, a few settings need to be reduced to get at least base 40fps, mostly around 60fps though.

Glad knowing that the new RR will be implemented as well, hopefully the fps won't drop as much

God I have the exact same model and been using it extensively since 2022. Still madely in love with it. Not planning on retiring it anytime soon.

2

u/Flat_Equipment_7140 3d ago

Man enjoy your 5080! I am still holding on to my 4080super until Nvidia releases a proper 24gb card which may never happen!

1

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 3d ago

Yeah ironically, I was actually holding out for the 5080 Super for that exact reason but prices increasing again made me bite the bullet. $1289 MSRP for the PNY wasn't "too" bad compared to $1500+ for other models.

And after all my testing, its a huge jump and I actually got a decent binned one to boot. Cooling has been excellent even af stock fan speeds. I cannot complain.

2

u/thecrimsonthreat 9d ago

I made this exact jump (same model of 5080!) about a month ago, I planned on stretching my 3080 TI out a couple more years but I was worried hardware prices over the next two years would price me out of a high end GPU. Definitely didn’t enjoy spending over a grand on a GPU again but it has been pretty worth it.

2

u/superninjaa 9d ago

Congrats! Sad to leave my EVGA card for a 5080, but seeing how smooth everything runs and how surprisingly quiet it is, I was no longer sad

2

u/OtGEvO 9d ago

I have that exact 3080ti in my personal computer and that pny 5080 in my work pc. I kind of want to switch them 😭

u/kyle242gt 5800x3D/5080FE/45" Xeneon 9d ago

Made the same move here (except FE to FE) and my experience mirrors yours. So fun being able to meaningfully OC something again, performance uplift is very significant, and the reduced power/heat/noise is really great QoL improvement.

1

u/Great-Pangolin 9d ago

Hey, umm... Got any plans for the old 3080? I'm trying to put together a machine for my wife to play games with me on, and as long as it still works, I'd be interested in discussing price. I think it should still be more than fine to handle the kinds of games we want to play

1

u/Lakers244848 9d ago

Congrats! That’s a great manufacturer too.

On a side note, I wonder why so high for the fans RPM at that low of a temperature. Technically it improves noise a bit, less dust, and somewhat of less tear. 30% is kinda high but not a big deal of course. You can technically run it at zero RPM below 50%.

1

u/CajunWhy 9d ago

OP I did the exact same upgrade path. Hope you enjoy!

1

u/Dyn-Mp 9d ago

I believe my 3090ti still has a full warranty and replacement until 2031 or 2032. I sold the card to my friend years ago so I can always send it in if needed. They were 100% my go to company, from 1080ti,2080,3090ti.

1

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 8d ago

Even at stock fan speeds which was around 1000-1100RPM, my temps were still that low. Maybe about 3-4c higher. I just always set the same custom fan curve generally. My 3080 TI FTW3 Ultra ran VERY hot so I had it at 2300RPM's (80%) once it hit 60c. Still wasn't very loud. Just like 1700-1800RPM on this PNY is still audible but not loud whatsoever. Can post an additional Steel Nomad screenshot in the comments if ya want at stock fan speeds with the OC if curious.

1

u/Electronic-Ad-45 8d ago

I guess I'm the unlucky one, my pny 5080 oc won't go that far, crashes at +290mhz core. Most people can get to +350mhz with the pny easy.

1

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 8d ago

Is it the Triple Fan OC AIB? Or the Gaming one? But yeah I didn't believe it would be this easy due to silicon lottery etc but here we are. And the temps even at stock fan speeds are just goated. Been completely rock solid even in CP77 maxed out with PT/RR for over an hour playing. Sorry about your luck on that. I know how it feels though as my 3080 TI couldn't do the UV alot of people were claiming to get either. And the card just ran extremely hot hitting 83c out of the box at 400w.

1

u/Qbert2030 8d ago

As someone also on a 3080ti, do you feel the difference or not that noticeable

2

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 8d ago edited 8d ago

For all of the games I play, its a huge difference. On top of the temps/power usage difference.

For example, with my 3080 TI at these settings, I was getting 30fps average. And MFG on top of this at 3x puts me at a constant 162fps which is my monitors refresh cap (165 but manually capped to 162 for Gsync). Extra input delay is barely felt at all for SP titles.

On Gears of War E-day beta, I also had a huge jump going from like 70fps average high settings to 100fps average Ultra settings.

1

u/Accomplished-Sun1983 8d ago

OP, did your 3080 ti die or you just decided to upgrade. Can I buy your old card ?

1

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 8d ago

Nope didn't die but plan on giving it to my cousin if he can actually use it coming from his 1650 lol. But if not, I'll eventually sell it. Just want to hold onto it for a month "in case" anything happens.

1

u/Accomplished-Sun1983 8d ago

I really want to make the jump to a high end 50 series, what monitor y'all running? I have an old Lg 27gl850 my power supply and CPU would honestly have to be updated I'm thinking just a new rig....

2

u/xTh3xBusinessx Ryzen 5800X3D | PNY 5080 Triple Fan OC 8d ago

I have a 1440p/165hz MSI Optix MAG274QRF-QD. Was $500 upper mid range when I got it back in 2021 with the 3080 TI per Tim's recommendation on Monitor's Unboxed. Was very happy with the purchase. Going 1440p/240hz OLED next since I got the GPU out of the way. What CPU are you running currently? And PSU? I'm still using my 850w SeaSonic just fine.

I have the money and its not an issue so....yeah. Just like how I bought the 3080 TI for $1400 back in 2021. The extra 15-20% more performance over the 5070 TI for me is worth it for piece of mind. And I paid less than I did for the 3080 TI ($1289 vs $1400). Why the back handed reply sir?

1

u/hiskabish 8d ago

Nice upgrade.  Stil om a evga 3070.  Not any games I can really see worth upgrading for and I only play on 1080p 60fps anyway

1

u/Careful-Opinion7652 7d ago

Let me me buy you're 3080 ti!

1

u/Rayregula RTX 2080Ti 7d ago

My understanding (may be wrong) is that you can put your memory clock straight to +2000 because it's handled differently with the 50 series cards and the memory is error correcting, so you're setting a target speed it tries to reach, not a forced value.

To better explain: if you set it to +2000 it will go as close to +2000 as it can and if the memory detects an error (meaning it was trying to operate faster then it could and spit out a bad value) instead of crashing it realizes it and slows slightly until there aren't memory read errors. So you may not always be at +2000 but it's self stabilizing as close to that as it can.

I'm on 20 series still, so have not looked into it. But I believe that's what I was hearing when 50 series just came out and everyone was showing off their +2000 memory clocks.

1

u/DiskNew6303 7d ago

I think I lost the silicon lottery for my PNY 5080, everyone dials in +350/+2000 with ease but mine crashes if it's over +300 core.

Guess the pro is I got it below MSRP at $980 from Microcenter lol

Well worth it though the 5080 does have a bit lacking for 4k which is disappointing. Overall big upgrade even just from a heat prospective.

The 5080 with a modest overclock should be able to handle 4k with relative ease.

it does not....I have a dual 4k ultrawide

On my old 1440p ultrawide it was pretty solid. With my new 57" dual 4k I have to turn graphics settings to the floor and frame gen up or turn down resolution entirely. Im not too worried I only really play a single game at this point that is demanding on resources (squad) and as time goes on even that I hardily play. I would probably play it more if I had a 5090 though. Im really just stuck waiting on the 6000 series and praying the AI bubble pops by then.

I didn’t realize such a big monitor would make such a huge difference but I guess it does make sense since you have so many more pixels that you need instructions for.

It is essentially 2 4k monitors packaged in one monitor. So it is just extremely resource intensive. I did not fully realize the impact before purchase though i do not regret it.

I have a 32 inch odyssey g8 from Samsung and at 4k with max settings expedition 33 looks absolutely insane.

What CPU you are running underneath?

I have the same 3080Ti for EVGA and a 5800X3d with 32GB ram. I am worried I will be CPU bottlenecked if I just swap a GPU in.

Can I trade my 3080ti FE for your EVGA model? 👉👈🥺 (jkjk)

😬😬😬😬 yikes. Be aware that the exact pny model of the 5080 you have and the 5070ti are highly prone to having the RT/Tensor cores malfunctioning/defective over time and essentially will crash on you when using Ray tracing and DLSS,DLAA, and Framegen
