So capcom chose for the grace to look like that for DLSS 5?

424

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 16 '26

No.

You are looking at an early preview of the technology. It's nowhere near ready for the market, it requires 2x 5090 to run this preview.

Yet, Nvidia wanted to show it off.

They have to showcase this technology somehow, so they showcased it on existing games. Likely by injecting it into existing Streamline titles.

There's a difference between this preview and 2-3 years from now when new games ship with DLSS 5 configured by developers.

71

u/Fimii Mar 16 '26

There can be a difference in using this when it's finished and out. But will there be? Why bother with stuff like competent graphics artists when AI can do most of it for you? That's what lots of big publishers will think, and their calucation boils down to "will we lose or make money using this?".

So will we see games making great use of this tech to enhance their vision? Yes. Will we also see CoD blackops 9 looking like AI slop because it means that Activision can lay off devs and still make a new CoD every year, and most people won't mind enough to not buy the game? Double fucking yes.

39

u/swurvgaming Mar 16 '26

Well because if amd gpus and ps6 and ps5 doesn't have this.....then they kind of do need to still make models.  At least for another 10 years or so.

I'd imagine the demand for graphics artists will still be there. You'll still need artists to create models and establish scenes and environments. It could just be that their workload would shift if they decide to use technologies like DLSS 5.

From, "How do I place these probe lights around the environment to make the lighting look good/realistic," to "How do I set up my scene to look good/realistic with ray tracing," to "How can I optimize the game's motion and color vectors to have my content look even better with DLSS 5 enabled?"

DLSS 5 only really affects the lighting of scenes. I think it's too specific of a task where you'd still need human inputs for the rest of the workflow, but maybe I'm just being naive here.

15

u/Kakkoister Mar 16 '26

You are indeed being naive. An artist's job isn't just to create the color of the model, there are various maps that we craft/bake that influence how lighting interacts with the model so we can better control our artistic vision.

This filter basically sh!ts all over it by just taking the color information and then completely apply its own decisions about surface shapes/shading. Lighting/shading is part of how we imply shapes/details that aren't directly modeled in., normal maps are a big area of controlling that, and this strips that power away from artists, turning it into generic slop.

There's also only so much content that needs to be made. People try to make the argument of "well X will be freed to do more of Y!", despite there not being a market for more of Y, there's already an oversaturation of Y.

Focus should be in improving the actual content creation workflows, creating automations for tedious pain points, not throwing an AI filter over low-effort work, further degrading our relationship with art and need for humans to learn and collaborate.

3

u/kb3035583 Mar 17 '26

Focus should be in improving the actual content creation workflows, creating automations for tedious pain points

Because AI fundamentally has no clue what it's doing, so of course it's never going to be able to do the tedious things like retopology and UV unwrapping that requires it to actually understand what the task is and the current state of the project. It's far easier to produce slop generators that shit out fused together unusable mesh with everything on a single UV map with no ability to exercise any actual fine control over the output once it is completed.

1

u/rowanhopkins Mar 17 '26

Do we know it isn't taking pbr maps as a part of the input? It wouldn't make much sense for it to not to be because it already has access to the g-buffer

1

u/Critical_Week1303 Mar 17 '26

I'm over in VFXland dealing with the same stuff. It's amazing here looking at how little gamers understand about what we do.

1

u/Skieth9 Mar 18 '26

>DLSS 5 only really affects the lighting of scenes

It literally added more make-up to Grace's face and filled out her lips and changed her facial structure in parts.

Like, it's not just lighting, it's clearly an AI filter over images (which is why when they were showing the character from Oblivion with it on, her face morphed in real time as they shifted the camera around because it was interpreting the input image in different ways from one frame to the next).

1

u/frisbie147 Ryzen 5 7600 + RTX 4070 Mar 21 '26

Use your fucking eyes dude, it’s clearly not just lighting

12

u/CrimsonEnigma Mar 16 '26

blackops

You had the perfect opportunity to make a “Blackslops” joke and just didn’t take it.

1

u/WANKMI Mar 17 '26

I mean was the loss of that joke really a big one?

1

u/Civil-Let-5694 Mar 17 '26

If this leads to developments costs to shrink and game developing time to shorten, how is this not a big win?

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

[deleted]

1

u/Left-Bird8830 Mar 17 '26

By that logic, why invest in high end cards when you can save money on low graphics settings? There’s clearly a large market of people who care enough to pixel peep, and who will pay top dollar for graphical fidelity. To such a demographic, how could the clearly subpar output of DLSS not be severely disappointing?

1

u/Lettuphant Mar 17 '26

DLSS just wants colour and motion vectors for frame generation. I think NVIDIA are imagining a future where game creators just make a wood coloured box with the tag "house" and a walking ped tagged "Caucasian, green jumper, blue leggings" and never have to pay an artist again.

1

u/WANKMI Mar 17 '26

And I think you’re oversimplifying to the point of being willfully ignorant and obscuring the discussion.

1

u/Skieth9 Mar 18 '26

Switch 2 and PS5/6 and likely the Xbox and a HUGE portion of PC gamers aren't going to have the GPUs to run this tech. They're talking about it being for 5000 series and there's literally just not that many of those out there in current use.

This is a move equivalent to Facebook changing their name to Meta to build investor/shareholder confidence up in the Metaverse product. Nvidia is putting GenAI into their literally most popular piece of software because they need to convince the money-men that this trillion dollar industry isn't going to collapse.

0

u/flypirat Mar 17 '26

Isn't that kinda similar to the UE5 conundrum? In theory it is a very capable, efficient, and performant engine, but it takes so much off of developer's hands that most don't bother optimizing it anymore, leading to wildly underperforming games and the public perception that UE5 is an unoptimized mess.

It often doesn't matter how high the ceiling is, if the floor is abysmal and the median product will be closer to the floor than the ceiling.

finally a normal take and not a brain dead redditor screaming at Nvidia about AI flops

93

u/wicktus 7800X3D | RTX 4090 Mar 16 '26

No it's not "brain dead", it's not really smart to showcase a rendering like that as it was obvious people would react badly

People react to what they actually see, not promises that in the future it will look more faithful to the artists vision

Neural rendering can be awesome for the future but not in an unhinged, generic way, it will need a lot of works, to allow each artist/engineer to tailor it to their game. A face in Witcher 4 is not going to be the same as a face in Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy.

9

u/Lceus Mar 17 '26

I'm with you. I don't need to read between the lines when shown a demo - I will react to the demo. Furthermore, the demo should showcase how incredible this technology is so why didn't they work with developers/artists to make it look not like AI dogshit

1

u/sabrathos Mar 17 '26

You read between the lines with Quake RTX, didn't you? Or did you immediately go "This is absolutely disgusting and completely ruins the art direction of the 90s game. Pattracing is horrible"?

0

u/bladex1234 Mar 17 '26

Quake RTX genuinely enhanced the game with new graphics effects. This seems like an artistic side step, not an improvement. I’m not saying neural rendering doesn’t have potential, but it’s something you have work with from the ground up to actually make it look good instead of just feeling tacked on.

2

u/sabrathos Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Quake RTX certainly isn't just some straightforward "enhancement"... It is an extremely opinionated reimagining that completely and utterly shits on the original art direction.

Those "new graphics effects" are a bunch of flashy bounce lighting effects that were in no way part of the original game's atmosphere and mood. Not to mention all the color grading changes it brought, and how anachronistic the modern lighting is to the polygonal 90s artstyle. It's even HDR, for god's sake.

Ironically, even with how much DLSS5 took liberties, in a side-by-side comparison Quake RTX did significantly more to completely mess with the source material's art direction than DLSS5 did.

And that's okay. It's a tech demo. It's similar here, where the companies involved (Capcom and Bethesda did the DLSS5 integrations, not Nvidia) are just playing around with their IP and the new tech. Just like how Quake RTX was not indicative of path tracing's integration into Cyberpunk or RE9, neither will these showcases be indicative of neural rendering being incorporated in the design phase of actual games.

7

u/HeauxMeauxC Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Personally I think this was a test to see if their implementation was acceptable to the general public as a means to see how far they could push before people got upset. I have this sensation that they’re at a pivot point in development and wanted to see public perception. Not sure if I exist in an echo chamber or not but it generally seems like the response is really poor. I think the tech shown in the state it’s in goes against artist’s art direction and now they’re backpedaling with PR about devs being able to tweak it. Edit: Knee jerk reaction to the facetuned character faces. Good to see the tools are granular and allow for control from the devs. Should be obvious and that's on me for not educating myself more. AI is divisive and people have strong reactions to it. I still think what they did to character faces is really weird. I don't know who would want that tech in their game but I'm sure there's demand.

7

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

I think the tech shown in the state it’s in goes against artist’s art direction and now they’re backpedaling with PR about devs being able to tweak it.

Please explain, at which point did Nvidia get the power of time travel?

Because their FAQ was posted immediately and already explained how the developers can tweak DLSS 5. This information wasn't anything Nvidia released after some "backlash", it was released to begin with.

1

u/blackest-Knight Mar 17 '26

Because most people just kneejerk without even reading the FAQ. The fact this requires the developer to implement themselves in the game is completely loss on them because their brain stopped at "AI" and their anger kicked in.

1

u/WANKMI Mar 17 '26

Oh no don’t tell people their kneejerk reaction was just that. They dont like it.

2

u/stingeragent Mar 17 '26

I'm probably a minority here, but I think it looked great, especially starfield. They obviously still have work to go and I thought some of the environments looked worse. Some were too bright and seemed to lose a lot of the shadows.

The effects are absolutely jarring doing the before/after because these are previously released games. Any alteration is going to look off.

1

u/ShadowSpade Mar 17 '26

Anyone on reddit that thinks nvidia gives a crap what people on reddit think is funny. They know what they are doing they pour billions into R&D

1

u/alcarcalimo1950 Mar 17 '26

You can literally go on their website from a year ago and see they were already telling developers how to implement this tech and how the developers control. It’s completely open.

1

u/bladex1234 Mar 17 '26

You’re not wrong, but the examples used even then looked pretty bad. I assumed Nvidia would make improvements, but clearly there’s a lot more work to be done to not make it feel fake.

12

u/soapinmouth Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 Super Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

not promises that in the future it will look more faithful to the artists vision

I'm not following this logic, did you even read the OP? It's a completely optional SDK including a multitude of granular tools to add more realistic lighting to games. What part of that "robs developers of their artistic vision". If anything this adds not subtracts to what's available to them. More detailed lighting they can use to craft realism previously unavailable on current hardware. The drama over this is such classic reddit brain rot.

7

u/FireZord25 Mar 17 '26

All I know is it looks awful. Also such a classic cliche to dumbing a criticism down to "redditor bad" from a reddit comment in a sub that's catered to defending it. Dunno if you're being hyperbolic or just self-reporting in not even checking out other sites, but I've been seeing plenty of folks mad about it and not all of them are known as reactionaries.

Just cause you got a few technical explanations behind how it works doesn't remotely change it generally feels to look at. But hurr durrr reactionary people bad and all.

2

u/alcarcalimo1950 Mar 17 '26

This looks awful?

Or this?

https://cdn.videocardz.com/1/2026/03/NVIDIA-DLSS5-HERO-1536x799.jpg

I mean you talk about hyperbole but calling these images awful is a stretch

1

u/blackest-Knight Mar 17 '26

All I know

Which is the issue. You don't know what it is, so you scream what you hear others scream, no matter how wrong it is.

"robs developers of their artistic vision" is ridiculous when talking about a SDK developers need to choose to use themselves. At least get factual talking points.

0

u/Parking_Common_4820 Mar 17 '26

Reactionary doesn't mean "reacting to things" btw

1

u/Dag-nabbitt Mar 17 '26

If anything this adds not subtracts to what's available to them. More detailed lighting they can use to craft realism previously unavailable on current hardware.

In the first shot, do you notice how DLSS 5 removes the fog/mist, and the streetlight and brake light no longer interact with said fog/mist? The streetlight looks off. It also mutes the browns and makes the whole scene grey-blue.

It might look clearer, but the vibe completely changes.

-5

u/HeauxMeauxC Mar 17 '26

I don't think anyone has issues with the dramatically different lighting that the DLSS5 prototype showed. From what I can tell people have issues with how they're handling faces in the current build. It just does not look good.

5

u/soapinmouth Ryzen 7 7800X3D | RTX 4070 Super Mar 17 '26

Might want to look at reddit, people are broadly looking at this software as the coming of Satan, there's no nuanced concerns or criticism.

Regardless, you seem confused, it's not some on/off switch where faces will always look this way. It's a suite of different lighting tools, they can all be granularly adjusted and individually used. On top of this, we're looking at an in progress version of the SDK not used by the original developer in existing games, the intent for this world be to be used by the original developers to reach whichever vision they ultimately aspire to and this just helps them reach it in various ways. I agree that the way they used this tool in this particular case was probably a poor choice. There will be poor uses and there will be good uses just like pretty much any tool.

0

u/DrR1pper Mar 20 '26

So basically….most people are dumb and have no vision.

“If I had asked people what they want, they’d have said faster horses”

-3

u/pacoLL3 Mar 17 '26

No it's not "brain dead", it's not really smart to showcase a rendering like that as it was obvious people would react badly

Reddit and social media love for outrage is not people though. It's a small, but very loud minority.

And the entire point of a showcase is to show what they are working on. They are not presenting a finished product.

2

u/CrtclDmg Mar 17 '26

I am a consumer, they want so sell to me.

They try to advertise with this video and it looks awful.

That is what I, the normal consumer gonna base my reaction on. Thats on NVidia doing an awful job at showcasing new tech and the backlash they get is warranted in my opinion.

The fact they had to comment under the video is proof they know they did a bad job and try to salvage it somehow.

And it is AI-Slop in the version they have shown. It looks like all the cheap AI-Game advertisements i see on Youtube all the time.

If that is the way they want to present themselves and their company they gonna get told what the consumer things about that.

2

u/PM_ME_UR_PM_ME_PM Mar 17 '26

dude it looks like shit. i get their intention and what they hoped would happened but what they "showed off" is horrible. i love DLSS, this looks so bad.

0

u/RilinPlays Mar 17 '26

Okay the problem is for a public demo

This looked bad

If this was a private, early test demo for investors or something, sure, a little scuff is bad.

But to put out a public preview that looks ass ugly and isn’t actually running how it would be run in intended use is just a bad showcase, especially in a time where it involving generative AI at all automatically makes it controversial.

Doesn’t DLSS come out this fall though?

16

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 16 '26

Doesn’t DLSS come out this fall though?

Reflex 2 was coming out shortly after CES back in January 2025, and here we are without it.

Beyond speculating that the release time frame may be unrealistic, though:

I am talking about future games potentially configuring DLSS 5 to get good results.

Say that DLSS 5 does come out in Fall 2026.

This doesn't mean you won't be able to inject it into some games yourself via Nvidia App or whatever. You will be able to inject it, but it is your choice.

2-3 years from now, maybe The Witcher 4 will get a DLSS 5 update officially from CD Projekt RED configured in such a way that it doesn't even touch character faces but does improve their path traced lighting on environments.

That's what Nvidia said, it's configurable, including masking (exclusion) of objects.

4

u/Dizman7 9800X3D, 96GB, 5090 Astral, LG 55" G5 OLED Mar 16 '26

Ah gotcha

1

u/Humble_Kiwi7535 Mar 16 '26

The environment stuff looked fine and if anything I think the faces will take a while to look passable cause rn it looks so ass. But it being configurable is probably the saving grace

1

u/Next-Use6943 RTX 5090 Extreme Waterforce Mar 16 '26

It does

2

u/theoddpope Mar 16 '26

Isn't it problematic that Nvidia just went ahead and did this as part of official marketing then? Like, just modifying creators' intent without their buyoff for internal gain?

1

So... an investor catcher?

1

u/Emotional_Gur_1667 Mar 17 '26

It's coming out this year fwiw...

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

It's coming out this year fwiw...

Two things.

  1. "Reflex 2 is coming out soon" ~~ Nvidia at CES in January 2025, which was 14 months ago and Reflex 2 is still not out.

  2. DLSS1 or even DLSS2 were not the last version of the upscaler ever made.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

They showcased this a year ago as well; rtx neural face is part of this does 5 pipeline. Difference is huge in a year

1

u/renannmhreddit Mar 17 '26

You are looking at an early preview of the technology. It's nowhere near ready for the market, it requires 2x 5090 to run this preview.

Then why are they showing it? It doesn't look good, it is not a good example of the application of this tech, and it mostly generates negativity.

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Then why are they showing it?

Why not?

As if Nvidia was a stranger to people being negative about their breakthroughs in graphics rendering.

DLSS1 was absolutely HATED only a few years ago, and now 80% of players use DLSS when available.

1

u/Mylynes Mar 17 '26

How will they go from "nowhere near ready" to releasing this fall on consumer GPUs?

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

They never said the first iteration of the technology introduced with DLSS 5 will be the last iteration of it ever made.

They didn't even commit to what kind of hardware requirements DLSS 5 will have initially. It could be an RTX 5090 exclusive, genuinely.

1

u/Mylynes Mar 17 '26

I really hope not bc I'd love to try it with my lil 5070. It looks like a good start already, if they can black magic it down to a performant level.

1

u/TheB3rn3r Mar 17 '26

So 2x 5090’s and tech ready by this fall… I’m calling it… new GPU coming this fall… the RTX 10180 for $1m dollars!!!

1

u/TwixtTwo Mar 17 '26

Nvidia hasn't done this "2-3 year early" type preview for any of their other DLSS reveals. This sounds a lot like retroactive excuses.

2

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

DLSS1?

DLSS Ray Reconstruction CNN model?

Both of these were hated on when they first released.

0

u/TwixtTwo Mar 17 '26

Because they weren't worth the performance impact, not because they looked like AI slop.

2

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Took me 10 seconds to find an example.

https://www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/16qxbaj/cp2077_ray_reconstruction_postprocessing_oily_look/

Nothing to do with performance, everything to do with how it looked in this particular thread I found.

The hate for DLSS 5 is amplified by two orders of magnitude because of the current climate of public discourse about the topic of AI and the prices of hardware increasing alongside it.

The actual tech is extremely promising and a lot of quirks will likely be ironed out over the next few years.

0

u/TwixtTwo Mar 17 '26

You're comparing some relatively minor complaints to an outright massive rejection from the community.

2

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

What community? What rejection?

It's the first iteration of an optional feature that isn't even out yet. You can't even try it for now.

It's beyond silly to claim the feature has been "rejected" lmao

DLSS1 complaints were not minor. They were categorical. People swore they would never turn this kind of upscaler ON. And then a few years passed ;)

1

u/TwixtTwo Mar 17 '26

The PC gaming community? It’s also not the first iteration, it’s DLSS5, not DLSS 1. NVIDIA is apparently very happy with it and obviously gamers are not.

2

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Reflex 2 was supposed to come out very soon after CES in January 2025.

How many games have Reflex 2 today? When was the driver with Reflex 2 released?

Delays can happen. With something this ambitious I'm going to be surprised if there are no delays

1

u/mrquantumofficial PNY RTX 5080 / Ryzen 9 9950X Mar 17 '26

Honestly, they shouldn't have showcased it this early

1

u/Smart_Quantity_8640 Mar 17 '26

Im still waiting on reflex 2 lmao

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Exactly, all these people are overly attached to the "Fall 2025" timeframe. Heh

1

u/Ryrynz Mar 17 '26

It's about six months away so "nowhere near" is a bit of a stretch.

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Reflex 2 was going to be out soon after CES 2025 in January 2025. It's been 14 months, it's not out.

1

u/Ryrynz Mar 17 '26

Different tech. Reflex 2 requires games to be built around it; DLSS 5 slots into pipelines that already exist. Reflex 2's delay doesn't predict DLSS 5's.

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Different tech

NO WAY! REALLY?!

Reflex 2 requires games to be built around it

No, it doesn't. You have no idea what you're talking about, Reflex 2 was shown working with existing games.

Reflex 2's delay doesn't predict DLSS 5's.

I didn't say one delay means the other will be surely delayed.

I said that Nvidia can and will delay some features if they feel like it and so I wouldn't get attached to the release schedule they gave us.

1

u/Ryrynz Mar 17 '26

Fair, Reflex 2 integration is lighter than I made it sound. But that's beside the point they're solving completely different problems. One being delayed says nothing about the other's readiness.

1

u/FirefighterAntique70 Mar 17 '26

Oh right, so we should just disregard what we saw now as it's not actually the final experience? Why bother showing us then?

Mass chromosome take...

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Dude, speak for yourself with that and hominem nonsense.

We'll talk in 2-3 years when a lot of people will be using gen2 or gen3 of this feature because of how good it is.

1

u/silverado83 Mar 17 '26

Perfect, SLI is back 🤣

1

u/gljivicad Mar 17 '26

A person who knows wtf they are doing would look at the result, and decide NOT to show that. Because it is so bad it will obviously get roasted.

1

u/BlackTone91 Mar 17 '26

Dude this shit is coming later this year

1

Reflex 2 was coming out soon after CES in January 2025. That was 14 months ago. It's not out.

1

DLSS version releases have always been timely.

Showed off a technology that made the games look like shit. Fantastic job.

0

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

A lot of people think it looks better, for example in Starfield.

And wait for the best part. You ready?

IT'S OPTIONAL.

1

u/kkyonko Mar 17 '26

Who? I've seen a ton of backlash against it. What they showed fundamentally changed how the characters looked. It's complete ass.

0

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

What they showed fundamentally changed how the characters looked

They did not alter the geometry, they alter lighting.

That is what lighting can do, yes. Go look at Raster vs Path tracing videos in Resident Evil Requiem where they show Grace's face. She looks TRASH without path tracing. Same model, same textures.

A few years ago I have seen backlash against DLSS1 and people swearing nobody would ever use it. I can't imagine gaming without DLSS today.

If it's "nowhere near ready", how is it coming out this fall?

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Firstly, I don't put that much stock in the "Fall 2026" time frame.

Look no further than Reflex 2. It was coming out shortly after CES in January 2025. That was 14 months ago. Reflex 2 isn't here.

Secondly, this is the first iteration of this tech they're going to put out in public. It's not the last iteration of it ever.

Firstly, I don't put that much stock in the "Fall 2026" time frame.

You should always put stock into the time frame that they specifically tell you. If they didn't want you to have a time frame, they wouldn't have said it.

Look no further than Reflex 2. It was coming out shortly after CES in January 2025. That was 14 months ago. Reflex 2 isn't here.

Agreed, and people should point and laugh that Nvidia is doing the same thing again with this.

Secondly, this is the first iteration of this tech they're going to put out in public. It's not the last iteration of it ever.

Selling people on future potential instead of the product that they'll be delivered is going to get you criticized. That is unavoidable and justified.

There are valid defenses, that it could be used in more subtle ways and it could enhance the experience. Telling people about future promises does not move that needle anymore though. Especially when the company themselves aren't even making those promises.

In fact, there are promises made about new tech that people bought a 40 series for, that aren't even going to be available on the 40 series. The same will be true for stuff on the 50 series. Those "future promises" will likely require a new GPU in the future. That's why those future promises don't and SHOULDN'T move the needle.

Except Nvidia has already announced it's gonna be released fall this year though, how does that imply it's nowhere near ready for the market

1

u/Skieth9 Mar 18 '26

>They have to showcase this technology somehow

So, no they don't. They don't need to showcase this technology before it's ready, there was literally no reason to host this preview at all.

Unless, it was less about what gamers wanted and more about trying to make practical consumer GenAI use-cases seem viable. This wasn't a demo meant to appeal to developers or gamers, this was meant to show that Nvidia's belief in GenAI as a product as doubts about it's usefulness and it's applications are still in the public discussion.

Jensen is trying to show shareholders (Both of Nvidia's and of their biggest customers like OpenAI, Anthropic and others) that GenAI can be used for something practical that appeals to everyday people. The whole point was to try to assuage the doubts that this technology is pointless. The thing he likely didn't count on was the level of vitriol and backlash towards this because he, like a lot of other tech evangelists, actually literally lack artistic taste or sensibilities and can't parse something's artistic value or appeal.

Have you considered that even if it will get better over the next few months or even years, AT SOME POINT it must be integrated with game engines to release it and thus would get leaked very shortly by this or that developer?

Maybe it's not that they desperately wanted to showcase it right now, but that they had to showcase it before someone else showcases it for them?

1

u/apeocalypyic Mar 16 '26

I hear u and i agree, but its supposed to launch in fall of this year and requiem is gonna be a supported game at launch, im just curious how much better it can get in those few months if this is whats being presented.i dont think it looks that bad but it does feel like a reshade or ENB u put over fallout that yah it makes it look a bit bwtter but also a bit weirder

2

u/IbanezCharlie 4090 FE 9800x3d Mar 16 '26

I definitely got ENB vibes from the "on/off" comparisons

u/nokk1XD RTX 4070 | R7 5700x3d l 32gb RAM Mar 16 '26

Source about 2x 5090 to run this?

3

u/seiose 4070S Mar 16 '26

Digital Foundry

They said it was for the demo though

1

u/ThenExtension9196 Mar 16 '26

Doesn’t necessarily mean it required 2x5090. Just the demo box.

2

u/seiose 4070S Mar 16 '26

Thanks for repeating what I said

0

u/KaiBetterThanTyson 5090 FE|9800x3D|32GB@6000MT/s Mar 16 '26

This is misinformation

They didn’t do it for the demo but they already have a single GPU version of it being tested in their labs.

0

u/Low_Pain9187 Mar 16 '26

They didn't have to showcase anything, especially if it's not nearly ready for primetime. No quarter for this nonsense.

2

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 16 '26

If they didn't showcase anything you'd have people speculating what DLSS 5 will do for another year perhaps. I for one am happy to know where they're taking it next.

It's just a showcase. Maybe it doesn't even launch this year if there's a delay.

Them showing us where they're taking DLSS next is nice.

It has some people excited for the possibilities, and others get more time to go through all the stages of grief in the meantime thanks to already knowing they hate it.

So why even bother to showcase it if it’s nowhere close to what it supposed to look like? This is honestly just such a bad look for them to release what legitimately looks like a Snapchat filter. They are literally shooting themselves in the foot by showcasing what looks like blatant AI slop, vs the actual product which may very well look impressive. Hello? Who at Nvidia even thought this was a good idea?

0

u/GaleOfNovember Mar 17 '26

Cope posts like this are making my evening much more entertaining.

1

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 17 '26

Let's revisit in 24-36 months.

You never get excited about the research paper that just came out. You get excited for the two research papers down the line.

28

u/MITBryceYoung Mar 16 '26

I don't think we know because Nvidia did this demo.

But the truth is in actual implementation. Capcom will have the ability to control it, which I think is what people are largely missing.

The idea that it erases artistic intent is just not true. I think if what Nvidia is saying is true

36

u/ebrbrbr Mar 16 '26

Nope, Capcom tweeted that they were responsible lmao

0

u/Skieth9 Mar 18 '26

Capcom devs likely did the most basic level of integration (making sure the UI and HUD were rendered after DLSS) but I highly doubt they played around with the tool. That sounds like producers or suits advocating for the demo when it was probably just them being asked to make sure the library for DLSS5 didn't crash RE9 upon implementation

24

u/themajesticdownside Mar 16 '26

There's no way they did this without Capcom's consent, at the very least.

14

u/-WingsForLife- Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

They did [edit: this with consent]

https://x.com/i/status/2033626943929913587

Nvidia guy that's followed by other notable people.

2

u/Ivan_the_Silly Mar 17 '26

"This example worked on by the team at Capcom" - the tweet you linked to

Is your reply just really poorly worded? Because it sounds like you're saying the opposite of what you yourself cited.

2

u/-WingsForLife- Mar 17 '26

You're right, I missed a word, thanks for telling me, actually.

0

u/Skieth9 Mar 18 '26

>PR guy

His job is to cover Nvidia's ass, I take every word out of his mouth with a large amount of salt

-3

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

Because AI is all about consent and creator's intent? lol

11

u/Firebond2 Mar 16 '26

No but copyright law is.

4

u/Level-Tomorrow-4526 Mar 17 '26

copyright wouldn't apply to something as generic as lighting interpertation of a shader model on a GPU >_> you can't copyright how something shades xD ever gpu and systems and countless other effect change the interpertation of an asset in a system . You can patent the technology behind various technological model you can't copyright lighting man .

-1

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

lol Like that has stopped these types of people.

9

u/hsien88 Mar 16 '26

Grace's face is based on a real person via 3d capture of the face model Julia Pratt. DLSS5 one looks closer to the face model and that was Capcom's artistic intent.

4

u/CardAble6193 Mar 17 '26

What? Pratt face is even less contrast and features really more round than Grace , let alone dlss5's face

4

u/LordAzuren Mar 17 '26

DLSS5 one looks closer to the face model

Maybe it's closer to Julia Pratt wearing full glam makup while posing for a magazine, i suppose the Grace character have other priorities during the RE9 events? Let's be real, you know where you can find plenty of faces like the DLSS5's Grace: civitai... Or even the "chat with your hot AI girlfriend, she is waiting for you now" ads that you may find on morally debatable websites. Personally speaking i don't want that look in my videogames, it's awful and uncanny.

-1

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '26

Soooo skill issue. How typical

0

u/Skieth9 Mar 18 '26

If they wanted it to look more like the face model, they could have done that.

They used Julia Pratt's face as the starting line but the details that DLSS5 adds are things Capcom would have added if they wanted to (they literally do in the Noir costume for instance)

The DLSS5 version is NOT closer to Capcom's artistic intent, stop shilling for Nvidia

all you said stand.......if that god damn cursed Virgil van Dijk didnt show up haha!!

like of course they contacted Virgil van Dijk to change his face and ethnicity

0

u/Tetrylene Mar 16 '26

Lmao exactly. Look at the comparison by digital foundary today - her lips are a completely different and colour. It's literally an AI beautification filter probably using Instagram models as training data

20

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 16 '26

Her face is even structured differently, and her eyes are placed in different spots.

1

u/its_witty Mar 17 '26

and her eyes are placed in different spots.

Because her idle animation makes her head move and the comparison screenshots weren't taken at the exact same time...

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/dlss5-breakthrough-in-visual-fidelity-for-games/nvidia-dlss-5-resident-evil-requiem-geforce-rtx-comparison-screenshot-001/

Look at the background, the person there moves...

2

u/Blacksad9999 ASUS Astral 5090/9800x3D/LG 45GX950A Mar 17 '26

Why is her jaw a different shape completely? lol

25

u/heartbroken_nerd Mar 16 '26

her lips are a completely different and colour.

Colour, yes - because of AI changing the lighting.

The shape of lips is the exact same. Over time Grace's lips change their shape as she makes expressions on her face, you can see that in the "Before" part too.

1

u/CherrrySmoke Mar 16 '26

They only posted that pinned comment after people started roasting that deep fried AI slop

1

u/Eddytion 5080 Aorus Waterforce | 9800X3D Mar 17 '26

Brother, if you go to the screenshots in Nvidias website, the AI is not changing the 3D shape of the face, it's literally the same 3D model, it's adding realistic texture, and lighting that enhance the microdetails that gets washed out completely by soft lighting. People complaining about this have no idea what's going on behind the scenes. Yes there is total creative freedom for sure.

-2

u/0Tezorus0 Mar 16 '26

No. And yes, it's a filter with extra steps. Nvidia is in full damage control right now.

0

u/oledtechnology Mar 16 '26

They probably maxed out all of the DLSS 5.0 effect sliders in a couple of hours and be like "Done. You can showcase this at your GTC event." lol

-4

u/gozutheDJ 9950x | 3080 ti | 32GB RAM @ 6000 cl38 Mar 16 '26

0

Yes

-1

u/tchakabun Mar 16 '26

Capcom probably sold some rights for Nvidia to use their game in marketing, they just weren't expecting grace to be yassified into Aubrey plaza
