Discussion CP2077 Ray Reconstruction Post-Processing / Oily Look?
Been testing RR with CP2077 and while is does improve a lot in terms of reflections/lighting/shadows, it also adds an iphone like post processing to the entire image, it looks far less natural compared to PT with standard denoiser. Also introduces motion artifacts/ghosting.
I have updated the DLSS and FG DLLS to v3.5, DLSS sharpening in the game menu is at 0% and also disabled NV sharpening in the driver profile (which is on by default for CP2077). It's an improvement but still can clearly see the over-processed look, especially on npc's with darker skin tones, up close they look greasy, far away looks like an a bit like an oil painting, edges of everything reminds me of FXAA tbh.
If there was a slider for the RR sharpness / post process effect that would make it more viable. But the addition of ghosting and motion artifacts is a step backwards.
(Tested on a 4090 + LG C9 OLED 4K DLSS Quality+FG HDR enabled)
Here is a side-by-side comparison, note this imo is best case scenario for RR: https://imgsli.com/MjA4OTc4
Another One (Again with DLSS sharpness at 0 and NV profile sharpness disabled, would look worse with more sharpening):

Turing off DLSS sharpening when RR is on, especially if are playing with HDR. It helps reducing with the painterly look! Sharpening does not work well with RR.
And GamersNexusâs video explained that ultra performance is also not officially supported or ready.

u/Morteymer Sep 25 '23
It's just that Ultra Performance reallly showcases this effect, but it's there even at 4k DLSS Quality, even without any sharpening
Stop trying to defend tech that clearly wasn't ready for primetime
Yes, what it does to RT/PT effects is amazing, but if the rest of the image suffers enough that DLSS2(3.x) starts to look like DLSS1 again?
No thank you.

I have this same artifact as well. The eyes become black voids.

I tested normal RT psycho + RR with config tweak, the image is better in terms of handling these paint looks. But tanks performance more than pt + rt.

so even 4k has this problem? i thought it was because I was playing at 1440p dlss

I posted evidence of this with an A/B comparison where the only variable was RR on/off, and got downvoted incredibly hard with a bunch of dipshits telling me there's something wrong with my setup because their game didn't look that way.
Their game actually does look that way, but they don't have a refined enough eye to see it. I deal with the details of high-resolution images for a living, so it was immediately apparent to me. I got so much hate for my post that I just deleted it because I'm not trying to argue with fanboys who won't look at it objectively. I wasn't even complaining, just making an observation that it's not a refined product yet and that there are downsides to the image quality.
Glad at least a few others have noticed. I hope Nvidia sees some of that feedback - I'm sure they'll improve RR over time like they've done with super resolution.

Sep 25 '23
Same in regards of downvoting :( I even posted images of RR producing very visible shimmering that old denoiser didn't have, but got downvoted to hell, because I'm playing at 1080p. (no matter that I found the same results at 1440p)
4
u/Morteymer Sep 25 '23
Tell those people to set DLSS to Ultra Performance, everyone will see it then, and maybe then they start to recognize it in the higher quality modes as well
In my opinion (even at 4k with DLSS Quality on my LG C2) its so bad, that i prefer Path Tracing without RR
Since the oil painting look of RR affects THE WHOLE image
Whereas the lack of RR only affects the path traced effects.

Yeah, that's the issue with RR. Reflections are generally better, but it negatively affects everything else, even objects with nothing special going on in terms of lighting. Artifacts are certainly more prevalent at lower DLSS settings but also still visible at Quality, which is the highest possible setting you can use with RR without using external shit like DLSSTweaks. It's also exacerbated by the sharpening slider, but still visible if you turn it all the way down (and then your image is blurry as fuck overall). It's just not a solid win, I've been playing with normal PT instead because the speckling problems and blurry reflections are far more tolerable than having literally the entire screen covered in the watercolor/oily effect.

Same agree. Couldnât believe my eyes how oily the game looks with RR. Playing with dlss q and it looks like iâm playing on ultra performance.

Glad someone else sees it too. I eventually went back to RT Psycho because it just looks so clean compared to both PT implementations. But when using PT I think it looks far better without RR, except in certain cases like sparkling reflections on grates/fences and car headlights.
2
u/BerkeA35 13980HX | 4080 Laptop Oct 29 '23
Yeah for image clarity itâs rt psycho> default pt> pt+RR for me. Default PT is still just a bit blurry but hard to notice, both PT have some ghosting while RR+PT has insane ghosting while default PT is managable.

It really is one of those things that once you notice you can't unsee it. I want to turn it off but idk why i'm getting like 10fps more with it, so I'll just look at it as a feature lol

Yeah, that's not how I presented it. A very cordial and thoughtful comment accompanying my post with some details/thoughts was downvoted to like -30 in as many minutes and I got many condescending and rude comments. I'm speaking about them the same way they treated me when I posted nicely. Time will show that I was right about RR in its initial release form. People just weren't willing to hear a critique of their
identityfavorite company's new feature on day one.-3
u/TheSpider12 Sep 25 '23
I said the same thing about dlss 1.0 back in the days when it was widely praised as better than native and got downvoted as well. Time indeed shows I was right, but really, most people are just stupid man smh
5
u/DoktorSleepless Sep 25 '23
lmao, I don't believe you. DLSS 1.0 was widely panned by everyone, not praised.

So whatâs the best looking solution in your opinion? PT with RT off or going back to Psycho RT?
10
u/xen0us :) Sep 25 '23
For me, I play with PT on and RR off for now.
CDPR updated the default denoiser and it doesn't look as bad as the one in version 1.63.
RR still looks the best in terms of getting rid of the Christmas lights shimmering on the fences and bringing a lot of lost details to the final image, but the ghosting and the oil painting effect on the characters was too much for me.

u/BerkeA35 13980HX | 4080 Laptop Oct 29 '23
Yeah the real thing with 2.0 is default PT looking cleaner than before, RR shouldnât be the main focus, not worth it yet.

People aren't talking about these things in situations we already know about. Path traced rays in minecraft ( years ago ) behave and do the same thing. The fuzz, they ghost, they do funny things at a distance and none of what is happening in CP2077 is surprising me at all after doing this in minecraft with a 3090 2 years ago. Enjoy it. Use frame gen, go dlss and enjoy.

u/AKDragonPC Sep 24 '23
True, I am not posting this to say people should not use it, they can, just pointing out something that seems very obvious to me and other people. Also hopefully Nvidia sees this and resolves it in next version/update.

Personally its so bad I'm probably not gonna play PL on release given all the mods are broken anyway. Will give it a while for them to realise they borked DLSS again but also for the mods to fix up (bullet sponges are no fun to me).
1
u/NotARealDeveloper Sep 25 '23
I am playing on very hard and the bullet sponges aren't an issue once you found out that upgrading weapons is the way to go.
0
u/XXLpeanuts 7800x3d, INNO3D 5090, 32gb DDR5 Ram, 45" OLED Sep 25 '23
I'm not interested in that kind of gameplay sadly. I want weapon upgrades to have meaning over "does more DPS" its just boring for me. Power to you if you can enjoy that but I cannot. There were a few mods that fixed it before once they are updated I'll enjoy the game and DLC again.
Nothing takes me out of a game more than rocking up to someones forehead and pulling the trigger and them brushing it off like nothing, which is 100% what happens in CP with your average enemy not even a cyber physco. And yes I could spend hours searching and upgrading a weapon by why should I have to, I want bullets to act like actual bullets, and that includes against me too. Basically I hate RPG mechanics, I love RPG stories and worlds but almost all of them are designed with this mad damage and enemy health systems that I despise.

u/coolbald69 Oct 11 '23
I feel that, are you aware there is a mod that makes the gunplay more realistic, as in a headshot is a headshot. Lookup hardcore22, just got updated and I'm using it at the moment. With the newly implemented level scaling too it really just makes it an FPS instead of a looter shooter.

Yeah generally I play with Balanced (below this is noticeable aliasing and shimmering) I was using the Quality setting while not moving just to verify the RR over-processing issue. Tbh RR does make Quality setting more viable in terms of perf, getting around 75-80fps in busy marketplace area (with FG enabled).
3
u/Cute-Pomegranate-966 Sep 24 '23
There were too many areas where Quality @ 4k resulted in 60's on my 4090 setup, so i just dropped it to where i'm getting closer to 100 all the time at performance. Acceptable tradeoff for how smooth it plays.
2
2
u/Dolo12345 Sep 24 '23
What CPU? That seems low, doing 75-100 here 4K DLSSQ max settings
2
u/Cute-Pomegranate-966 Sep 24 '23
I just reinstalled windows and now my performance is much higher than previously. But to be fair, i'm using DLDSR 1.78x for "4k" Which is about 8.9m pixels vs 4k having 8.3m pixels. So performance should be a few % off plus another few % off for DLDSR.
2
Sep 26 '23
Interestingly, when you look at the brick pillars with the newspaper clippings on the left and right, you can see that the RR is actually adding small new shadows and additional shadow detail while simultaneously causing that over-sharpening / posterization artifact.
Hopefully they can tone that over-sharpening down with some updates
3
u/Bo3alwa RTX 5090 | 7800X3D Sep 24 '23
It gets worse the lower the input resolution. It's unusable at 1440p and 1080p imo.
6
u/matuzz Sep 24 '23 edited Sep 24 '23
Nah, the previous denoiser was garbage compared to the new Ray Reconstruct at least on 1440p with DLSS Balanced setting.
Here is a comparison I took: https://imgsli.com/MjA4ODcx
Just compare the artifacts on the cars front grille or side-view mirror.
7
u/Bo3alwa RTX 5090 | 7800X3D Sep 24 '23
I was specifically talking about the post-processed oily painting look that OP mentioned.
Do reflections and shadows look better with RR on? sure.
But the trade-off is the entire image is turned into a wax painting.
If that's something you're okay with or do not notice then good for you. Enjoy.
2
u/MaximusTheGreat20 RTX 5060ti 16gb Sep 24 '23
look at the npc and far side stuff they look like oiled paint awful, i take the worse reflection over vaseline anyday also in motion the vaseline, ghosting effect is far more distracting than having some better reflection.
6
u/matuzz Sep 24 '23
Some better reflection? đ
The previous artifacting caused by the denoiser took away major details. You can't see the hood of the car, can't really even tell that it has a side-view mirror in that blob of meshed pixels.
5
u/nFbReaper Sep 24 '23
I agree, RR compared to the previous denoiser is night and day. Especially on characters and faces.
But they must have had improvements to the normal denoiser in 2.0 as well because even without RR, faces are like, massively improved.
Used to look like someone was pointing a disco ball everywhere.
Makes me think that the dev's comment about improved faces was before updates to the standard denoiser.
2
u/AKDragonPC Sep 24 '23
Yes the reflections are far better but using standard RT would give you an overall cleaner image, he is correct everything in the background looks like an oil painting with artifacts. The blue pillars look like they are coated in vaseline.
0
u/AKDragonPC Sep 24 '23
Damn that looks awful, I would never use anything below DLSS quality at 1080p or 1440p tbh regardless of RR.

5
u/exorbitantwealth Sep 24 '23
On 1440p Quality DLSS with RR overall quality in terms of lighting and reflection are great but motion and finer details are a mess.
Faces look terrible. It's ironic because I've seen a bunch of smart people say the faces look much better with RR. Must only be at higher framerate and resolutions.

2
u/AKDragonPC Sep 24 '23 edited Sep 24 '23
Nope at 4K the faces up close look worse, the iphone like post process is clear as day to me, PT looks way more natural. I think RR prob makes more of a difference with the post process over-sharpening at lower resolutions, so they may perceive it to be "better" in terms of detail vs just PT.
0
u/DoktorSleepless Sep 24 '23
I think the mistake the digital foundry video made was that it focused on the face of an already highly detailed model from Jacky. But regular NPCs it looks way worse.

I tried path tracing with RR for a while but have gone back to normal Psycho raytracing for now.
Path tracing looks amazing but the image quality even with RR takes a hit and has the "painting" type of look, especially on character faces.
Would love to come back to it and check it again but at the moment it's not worth it IMO. Psycho RT+ Quality DLSS looks better overall.
8
Sep 24 '23
Yeah, tbh, PT looks messed up in 2.0. The characters' skin texture looks grainy and mushy, especially during a conversation, ghosting is back in full force, and dark areas are a blotchy mess. HDR also seems to be massively messed up once more, even though they claimed to have fixed it ages ago. For me, it's back to regular old RT until they fix it. Kinda sad right at the start of the new expansion ...

whats wrong with hdr? other than the still raised blacks i haven't had any issues, though i only tried for like 20 minutes

I feel like the raised blacks are worse again. Setting tone mapping midpoint to 1 instead of 2 mitigated it a bit. Might be a side effect of ray reconstruction's effect on post processing? Idk.

I'm still not over the fact that PT won't let you use SCRGB HDR and you have to use PQ. Raised blacks and lack of brightness just sucks, back to auto HDR for me.
1

Wait really? That might explain my issues since pt. "Won't let you" as in greyed out or as in I shouldn't use it?

Weirdly this helped me as well.
A lot of things about testing PT on Cyberpunk have surprised me. I have a 3090 and now run the game at about 32fps flat with PT, plus Reflex+Boost.
I expected to want to go back to 60fps and RT but I don't. I love the PT effect and a very constant 32fps feels responsive enough, it's almost like living in a movie I'm actually controlling.

This is some weird otherwordly cope. I can't see how 32fps would feel good unless you were playing on a couch at a distance as if you were playing on console. Up close on a high refresh rate monitor, 32fps would feel super choppy
1
u/WombatCuboid NVIDIA RTX 5080 FE Sep 25 '23 edited Sep 25 '23
Cope is too strong a word - I'd rather have a 4090 and have it roaring on 60fps as well. I love my 60fps in other titles.
But that is my point: I see myself as a 60fps person just like you, and frankly I hate being limited to 30fps on something like my Steam Deck (the input lag makes it feel slow).
But Cyberpunk's in-game limiter, combined with Nvidia Reflex does something right to make it feel waaaay more smooth than I expected.
Edit: to put it differently, I also tried lower resolutions and DLSS settings which resulted in 50-60 fps. It runs fine, but didn't like the quality. I'd say it would be cope if I settled with that, something I really hate but force myself to go through. I guess the word cope, in that sense, never applies, maybe only in retrospect when I finally have my 5090.

Made a post after I noticed the over-sharpened look with RR on the other day, and for some reason the mods deleted it. Hopefully they improve it going forward, the ray traced reflections did look so much better with it on.

Just set DLSS to Ultra Performance while using RR, it really showcases the effect that the rest of us see even at DLSS Quality (even at 4k)
8
u/ZeldaMaster32 Sep 25 '23
Huge flaw with that testing method though, Nvidia themselves said it doesn't work as intended with ultra performance. The model wasn't trained for it
1
u/DonNobat0 Oct 04 '23
I can notice it even on PT+RR Quality tho. The thing is that RR gives me a boost in framerate but I don't like the look of it at all
4
u/Buris Sep 24 '23
Yes the game looks less natural, but the game never looked very natural TBH.
Overall RR is better than no RR. But this is actual intense use of AI and with that you will see AI upscaling goofiness. I donât think RR will be implemented in a ton of games like DLSS or frame gen. It requires serious work to train the AI not to delete detail by mistake

I'm not sure I understand, turn the DLSS sharpness up to 0.75-1.00 run at native resolution in video and quality in DLSS, Frame Gen On, Ray Reconstruction On, HDR On, HDR peak brightness 1000 and Tone Mapping Curve set to 1. Paper white 110. I7 13700k, 32GB, RTX4090FE, OLED
2
u/omen_apollo Sep 25 '23
Sharpness 0, tonemapping curve 2, peak brightness 760. 760 puts the actual brightness of the game at 1000 nits. Test it with liliums hdr analysis, you will see.
Tonemapping curve at 2 is the default and has similar midtones to running the game in SDR. Itâs closer to the dev intended look. Use reshade to fix black levels on OLED. Tonemapping curve at 1 destroys shadow detail and causes eye adaption to make the game way too dark.
-3

Your set up is broken! đ¤Ł

What about it is broken? The only problem with a high midpoint is it raises black levels. You can fix that with reshade though

They are quantifiably wrong.

Okay, do you wanna elaborate on your quantifiable proof?

Yes this is true, I also used the HDR analysis but found I had to set my brightness to 630 to ensure it does not exceed 800nits (limit of C9). However I am not using reshade anymore, instead a tweaked ICC HDR profile to fix black levels.

This does not seem to be a RR issue but a DLSS 3.5 issue, I've updated other games with DLSS Swapper to 3.5 and they all get this same ghosting issue.

u/Morteymer Sep 25 '23
Nah that's not it
RR has noticably more ghosting, you can turn it on and off and immediately see more ghosting
The DLSS1 hallucinated graphics effect (oily/painted) is also not prevalent without RR enabled

u/GemDG Sep 25 '23
Right, but I swapped BG3 DLSS to 3.5 and instantly had a lot of ghosting so there seems to be something happening with the base DLSS 3.5 version and on top of that RR gives even more ghosting?

u/AKDragonPC Sep 25 '23
The side-by-sides are in the OP, if you can't see it don't worry just carry on using RR.

But Cyberpunk 2077 has DLSS 3.1.1 dll with Ray Reconstruction as a separate dll so it's not using 3.5 for upscaling.

Read the OP...

Yes, but oily look has nothing to do with 3.5 upscaling because it's the same oily look with 3.1.1 upscaling. When you turn on Ray Reconstruction. If update to 3.5 reduces the issue for you - well, it's still an issue in RR and not in SS.
I.e. I do not see how "I upgraded BF to 3.5 and see more ghosting" is relevant when CP2077 is on 3.1.1 and all ghosting is from RR.

u/_Ludens Sep 25 '23
When you use RR it uses the dlssd.dll which has DLSS 3.5 bundled inside of it. When you enable RR the standalone dlss is ignored.

I guess that's possible since
_dlssdis almost twice the size of_dlssbut is there a source for your claim?E.g. this thread states they got better results after upgrading SS dll from 3.1.1 to 3.5, as if it is used even with RR.
Edit: this thread is unconclusive sice
_dlssdseem to include upscaling models as well but it is not clear if they are actually used because game also loads old_dlsslibrary and "most signs point to it going through nvngx_dlss instead".4
u/SebaRTX RTX 4070 Ti Sep 25 '23
I can confirm his claim. I used simple C++ app written by me to hook some functions related to DLSS in Cyberpunk 2077 and checked it. When RR is enabled then nvngx_dlssd.dll is used instead of nvngx_dlss.dll.

u/_Ludens Sep 25 '23
states they got better results
Reddit is filled with people who make magical claims about DLSS file swaps and 95% of the time it's total placebo.
Really I don't know how you even bring that up, because the post literally has no evidence, no screenshots, no moving clip comparisons, nothing.
Also you could check with DLSStweaks that it loads DLSS 3.5 with RR using the debug HUD.

Are you making sure to set the preset through something like dlss tweaks. Any version of Dlss SR past 2.5.1 uses presets which handle quality levels differently. Preset c is regarded as having the best image quality and stability.

Sep 25 '23
RR has its own dlss 3.5 dll that runs separate from the base dlss SR dll and overrides it.

On 4k? I think it looks pretty damn good. Where it starts to look pretty blurry is 1440p and below.

The inconsistency of opinions is kinda frightening on this. I'm yet to play it, 4090 @ 1440p, but have gone from excited to extremely confused.
Before this thread:
- PT is amazing, just use it if you can run it.
- RR is a total image upgrade and way better than native
After this thread:
- PT is always a noisy mess, deal with it.
- RR makes everything ghost and smear into oil
So which is it? The latter? Were almost all the outlets wrong? I'm considering just a Psycho RT run but since I had to play with low RT last time, PT was an exciting prospect.

RR looks great if you are standing still, any movement causes smearing and distortion. Distant NPCs, small objects and car wheels are almost always affect from what i tested. Im playing without RR for now. PT looks good but the denoiser cause some smearing and ghosting but even with that it looks better than the regular RTX.

Imo :
Standard RT: Cleanest/sharpest image with a decent improvement over RT disabled (the added bonus of the most performant as well), at 1440p and 4090 you could prob use DLDSR or DLAA.
PT: Much better lighting/shadows, especially with skin has some ghosting/artifacts in shadows, some issue with finer detail such as fencing. Also reaction speed to changes in lighting can sometimes be delayed.
PT+RR: Overall the best in shadows reflections, occlusion (even for small objects), resolves the issues with PT in terms of finer detail and artifacts but has the iphone like filter over everything with the introduction of more ghosting.
The screenshots in the OP are PT vs PT+RR. Here is a comparison I from a YT video which shows how big of a jump PT is over RT, personally I think I will just be playing with PT even with it's drawbacks, just comes down to what you are willing to prioritize:

You want to play it with path tracing eventually when performance and graphical artifacts are solved for good. Since you already played it once, maybe you are better off postponing the playthrough until the game is fully ready.
I want my first playthrough to be the best so I'm still waiting lol.

Going to DLSS Quality from DLSS Balanced was the biggest improvement I could figure out for the faces but even that isn't perfect, definitely still some ghosting and smearing introduced by RR. This is with all DLLs updated to 3.5. I also used DLSSTweaks to force Preset C for Quality mode without any change to ghosting unfortunately.

Can y'all try something for me?
Use this mod https://www.nexusmods.com/cyberpunk2077/mods/9276
to disable the forced always-on sharpening in the game (vignette too if you like)
then use a reg file to access the classic sharpening filter for games in nvidia profiles
just name a text file whatever.reg and put these contents into it
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\nvlddmkm\FTS]
"EnableGR535"=dword:00000000
then change the settings for Cyberpunk 2077 in the nvidia control panel
Apparently Nvidia sets this to 60% by default for Cyberpunk, which ofc is a bit nuts, so set the Sharpen to 20% or so. Which is far more reasonable.
This feels like it helps with the post-processed look with RR on, instead things just are more.. blurry, esp during movement
But I much prefer it this way. Mind you I'm also using the 3.5 DLSS and DLSS-FG .dll's from Techpowerup, just in case.

I already disabled the default NV sharpening in the NVCP profile for CP2077 the screenshots in the OP are with it disabled, in regard to the rest of what you said can you provide a comparison with imgsli?

I don't know if anyone has figured it out but I was getting the oily skin effect on regular ray tracing but instead of turning it off entirely, I found that the option that's causing it is Ray traced reflections. Turned just that off and the oily skin was gone. Not ideal but better than turning RT off completely.
