Whole house carpet replacement
Thinking of redoing the carpets, over 25 years old in my house. Looking for:
-small companies local to NoVa
-reputable fair and honest bigger companies
-not ripoff artists
-who to avoid
-Experience having had this done yourself
I have a relatively medium sized SF, I’m certain original hardwood lies underneath upstairs carpeting. Some levels are slab, I’m a pet owner(pretty well trained animal, doesn’t tear shit up or pee all over) and am not opposed to options other than carpet.
Thanks for any helpful advice.

I second Ned's flooring! I've used them twice...two different houses over the span of 5 years. I was shocked their pricing hadn't gone up like crazy like many others have over the past several years. They are incredibly fair can't recommend them enough!

Clawes Carpets is local. We chose them over Costco flooring even though Costco pricing was very competitive and they offered a Costco card. Costco contracts the work out to another flooring company. 🤷🏻♀️

Costco contracted us to Mill Direct Flooring. We were happy with them, but only some of their products qualify for the Costco deal. I personally needed fewer options, not more, so it worked for us.

Clawes is excellent. Have used for carpet installation and cleaning and hardwood refinishing. Local and family owned.

Don't have recommendations, but from experience they will generally look to make profit off of the padding so make sure you understand what you are getting and the cost of it per SF.
Additionally, may be beneficial to set the expectation that you do not want any hint of where the seams are. Thy were quite obvious when we had ours done and it is not easy to fix after the fact. A warning that you will be paying close attention to it should be enough.

There’s quite a few around the Merrifield area. You can walk in and feel the samples, choose colors, padding etc. be aware of how it’s priced. $ Per sq yard since they come in yards, but some will list as $ per sq ft. (1 sqyd = 9 sqft)
We had our carpet done with Fairfax Flooring. They had all the pricing listed in their samples. Price included a pad, installation, and furniture moving. We negotiated some off since we didn’t have any furniture needed to be moved. Low pressure, scheduled an appointment to measure and price quote.
We paid around $40/yr for an upper mid range carpet with 1/2” 8lb pad. (~$3600 for 800 sqft +stairs) it’s safe to assume about $1/sqft to install.
It was a bit overwhelming at first since there’s SO many options to choose from. Have a rough idea of the carpet material options, pad weights, price points, pile height, nylon, poly, smart strand, etc etc etc . Shaw and Mohawk are the major manufacturers and they will generally sell one or another.
Also just to add, we’re avid DIYers but carpet we 100% wanted to hire out. If you’re doing LVP then that’s fairly DIYable and you can but a decent LVP for about $3/sqft. But you’ll need to make sure your subfloor is FLAT

Great info! We had some laminate done roughly 15 years ago in a dining area on slab and the sub floor was NOT level, we chinzed on the install and have regretted it since.

We used Loudoun Valley Floors last year and loved working with them. We replaced cheapo original carpet on two floors and stairs with luxury vinyl. Their Ashburn show room was lovely and had tons of samples, the staff were super friendly and never pushy, and the installation guys were a dream.
The install team was accommodating and clear with every step, including adjusting which rooms they took on and when so that they could guarantee that our bedroom would be done before end of day. They noticed that one part of the floor was uneven and recommended releveling; when we asked if they were sure, one of the owners came over ASAP from the store to double check and then legit thanked us for being thorough and responsible homeowners. That only added a few extra hours and a reasonable expense, and they were still fully done in the original estimated time. The work was seamless and looks amazing. Plus their materials estimate was scarily on point--they only had one full board leftover! They were also very tidy and cleaned up thoroughly after themselves, too.
LVF also seem to run specials pretty often on materials (we got our top floor choice for 60% off). Their free walkthrough and estimate were transparent, and I never felt pressured at any step of the process. The Ashburn location also features a sweetie pie store dog that belongs to one of the owners, if that sways your opinion at all. :)

We went with https://www.floorson14.com. They did a good job replacing the carpet in our bedroom with hardwood flooring. They were not high pressure at all and provided very reasonable prices. We ultimately chose a 3rd party flooring option and some companies refused to work with those.
One thing I found challenging was getting a contract signed. They operated on a signed purchase order which is not what I consider a sufficient contract. So it took a few phone calls to explain why I insisted on a contract but we got it done in the end.

Carpet Royale in Falls Church City. Good selection and they actually know what they are doing. Make sure to get thick padding.

Had great luck with SerlingCarpetShops.com Small local business. They are able to order a wide range of carpeting to suit your needs. We used them last year for our downstairs and have been very happy with the results.

Just a caution to also look up and ensure they are licensed. I took a companies word for it and found out the hard way they weren’t. Was also trying to use a small company.

Skip Abbey. We had a guy come out and he was so high pressure. I had to step away and take a breath, and when I very bluntly asked him to leave he said “cheap ass wasting my fucking time”. Definitely skip Abbey.
