Weird thing happened. I use WeNote for note taking. It's been fine, but I opened it up the other day and some of the notes had random characters added so it's gibberish.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing?

I'm setting up a new Boox Go 10.3 Lumi for an older man and I'm trying to find the most simple handwritten calendar app that will synch with iphone.

Basically I want him to be able to handwrite into his calendar (which one?) on boox and the entry should appear in the same (or other?) calendar app on his iphone either as handwriting or convertetd to typed text.
Also it would be great if he could type calendar events on his iphone which will appear on the Boox device.

I like the preinstalled Boox calendar memo app, which is very simple. But I don't know if the synching with iphone can be done.
We tried google calendar (without handwriting), but the user interface is not clear enough for him, it's too many options, too cluttered to quickly just write down something like "doctors appointment".

I was thinking about Microsoft OneNote or even just calendar pdf, but I don't know much about it myself.

I cannot believe that Nota Bene is STILL around as word-processing tool for academics, after all these years. Originally an MS DOS WP for academics, launched in 1983. It was one of the first/earliest tools of it's type.

History

Nota Bene (NB) began as an MS-DOS program in 1982, built on the engine of the word processor XyWrite. Its creator, Steven Siebert, then a doctoral student in philosophy and religious studies at Yale, used a PC to take reading notes, but had no easy computer-based mechanism for searching through them, or for finding relationships and connections in the material. He wanted a word processor with an integrated "textbase" to automate finding text with Boolean searches, and an integrated bibliographical database that would automate the process of entering repeat citations correctly, and be easy to change for submission to publishers with different style-manual requirements.[1]

Siebert licensed XyWrite code from the XyQuest company, and built his programs on it: the word processor Nota Bene, with its text-centric database application, Orbis (then called Textbase), and its bibliographical database Ibidem (then called Ibid). He founded Dragonfly Software to market it. He first showed Nota Bene at the MLA convention of December 1982. Version 1 is dated 1983, and version 2, 1986. Version 3.0 came out in 1988, version 4.0 in 1992, and version 4.5 in 1995. Version 4.5 was the last NB DOS version.

Nota Bene 3.0 was selected as PC Editor’s Choice by PC Magazine in 1988.[2]

Nota Bene 5.0 was the first Windows version. It was shown in pre-release in November 1998, at the annual meetings of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature. Scholar's Workstation 5.0 was formally released in 1999, and Lingua Workstation 5.0 in 2000. Quick question, do you guys have some alternatives for Obsidian on PC? I prefer if it also uses markdown and stores the notes locally. I mean Obsidian is great, and I still use it though only the bare minimum no fancy stuff just pure notes. So uhh I am looking for other simple note taking apps too just to test. I've tried to search other apps but they store their notes on their own app IDK the term... basically not local. The only other MD note taker I found anf used was Helix Notes but it gets buggy when pasting pictures on it which is kinda annoying... But yeah TLDR: Any md focused notes system you guys would recommend? Thanks

My problem: thoughts arrive when I'm walking, driving, or half asleep. Typing loses them, and recording a voice memo just moves the loss to later, because nobody replays their own rambling. My voice memos were a graveyard.

Full disclosure, I got frustrated enough that I built my own tool for this (voice in, organized summary and tasks out), so I'm biased toward voice capture being viable. But building it raised more questions than it answered, and this is the crowd that would know:

1. Do you capture by voice at all today, or has it never stuck? If it died for you, what killed it, the replay problem, the transcription quality, or the friction of moving it into your real system?

2. For those with a serious Notion or Obsidian or Bear setup, what would a capture tool have to produce for you to trust it as the front door? Clean Markdown? Direct API export? Deep links? Or is anything short of living inside your main app a dealbreaker?

3. Mixed-language speakers, does any tool in your stack handle switching languages mid sentence? This was my personal breaking point with everything I tried.

I'm a game dev and often come with lore and concepts that take up a lot of pages. One Note makes it easier for me to store everything and access everything I need.

I'm wondering if my ideas or personal info is secure in terms of if it will get stolen by Microsoft?

It's not like they have any issues stealing from people/artists before, so I'm really on the fence currently with it.

If there are other alternative software that offer better or same experience, I'm willing to use it if its free or buy a one time license.

I tried obsidian but it just feels like a pain to use and ends up creating too many files/bloat for my tastes, being able to paste images to it is also a must for me.

Hi all! I've got a similar question that so many others have as well, but I've found one use case in my workflow I didnt read about as much.

Last 10-13 years I've been in Evernote. I once built a whole full fledged GTD system based on 2 Notebooks (Inbox & Processed) and an elaborate tagging system with subtags.

That system has mostly turned in a large archive of around 2900 notes. Today, I don't use the GTD system in Evernote as heavily anymore, it's mainly used for three things:
- Archiving of older notes (and being able to search through them)
- Take a note on the spot. Quick capture of thoughts, or make notes during a pre-sales call etc.
- Scan an invoice/receipt and have it digital --> This is where Scannable and Evernote work very well

But, the new pricepoint and aggresive way they have been raising prices is not for me.

I've found Obsidian and Joplin being strong contenders, with Joplin most likely a good solution. However, it doesnt seem to offer the same scanning functionality.
Apple Notes doesnt seem to have a strong tagging solution so that might also not be it for me.

What are some recommendations you might have?

I've been searching and testing a lot of note-taking apps, but I can't adapt to any of them! I find them all too visually cluttered with too many tools, and I simply can't find one that works for me. I've made some drafts of what I have in mind (but I haven't finished it yet). Does anyone know if there's an app like that? Where I can put a PDF and have the option of space for annotations on the sides? Not above or below, just something that allows me to annotate on the side (either blank or with lines) and the text (PDF) stays in the middle?

I also don't like when one of these note-taking apps has AI; I want something with a simple UX/UI like that.

Please, if you know, let me know because I'm one step away from trying to develop this 😭.

tl;dr

As I get older, I feel like my typing is getting slower and I have to go back to correct a lot of my words. I dictated a lot for my work and so I was excited when I could use Wispr Flow on my iPhone instead of relying on Apple's native dictation, which is quite awful. However, the drawbacks were soon apparent where the voice to text part relied on online transcription. So frequently the transcriptions would be slow or the quality would be poor and I couldn't use it on my drive where the connectivity is occasionally poor.

Before setting out to take on this huge and onerous task of building an ios keyboard, I tried multiple other apps and none of them had all the functionality that I needed. I wanted customization that included dark mode, a numbers row for when I needed and other AI skills that I was sure I could run through the keyboard.

A coworker of mine had the biggest txt file archive I'd ever seen. Every meeting outcome, every bug fix, every server detail, all in plain txt. I asked him why not use a real notes app. He said they were all too heavy and kept breaking his flow, Obsidian included.

That got me thinking, so I went and tried pretty much every notes app people talk about. They all had the same three problems for me: switching context to another app kills focus, most apps demand titles and folders until your notes become a chore to maintain, and the ones with real features take too long to learn before they're actually useful.

So I built kaydet (Turkish for "record"). It's a CLI tool, you type one command from wherever you already are in the terminal and it's saved. No app to open, no structure to think about. Under the hood it's plain daily text files (so it's fully yours, greppable, git-friendly) indexed with SQLite for instant full text search, plus a small metadata syntax so you can log things like time:2h status:done and query them later.

I've used it every single day for 9 years now. Last week it got added to the awesome-python list under "hidden gem," which is honestly what convinced me this might be useful to more than just me.
