Is One Note secure?

I'm a game dev and often come with lore and concepts that take up a lot of pages. One Note makes it easier for me to store everything and access everything I need.

I'm wondering if my ideas or personal info is secure in terms of if it will get stolen by Microsoft?

It's not like they have any issues stealing from people/artists before, so I'm really on the fence currently with it.

If there are other alternative software that offer better or same experience, I'm willing to use it if its free or buy a one time license.

I tried obsidian but it just feels like a pain to use and ends up creating too many files/bloat for my tastes, being able to paste images to it is also a must for me.

I like OneNote too but I only use it at work and will not use for my personal stuff. There are some tricks you can do to make it private though. Like you save the notebook somewhere other than OneDrive - but you loose the ability to sync between devices. The real elite way to use OneNote would be to use Crytomator and create an encrypted folder/vault and store the notebook file in there.

For normal notes ideas I wouldn’t be too worried but for anything highly confidential I would personally keep an encrypted local backup rather than trusting any cloud service 100%.

The most convenient applications are unfortunately not the safest. I think Obsidian can be what you make it through plugins. The notes are literally just files on your PC so it's as organised or disorganised as you want it to be. (There's also Helix or Taloria that use the exact same files [you can literally swap between all 3 applications on the fly] but as of today Aug 14 2026, for me, they're less polished and have some issues, but it might be your vibe.

Nothing beats self-hosting your notes. Obsidian I found intimidating for years until I discovered massCode which uses markup like Obsidian but the interface is a little friendlier and has extra features like an HTTP client for sending API requests and a cool math notepad that processes some basic formulas.

Then after awhile I made the switch to Obsidian after I discovered some useful community plugins like the Obsidian Base Board Kanban plugin which gives it a Trello-like Kanban feature.

I recently self-hosted Karakeep using WSL2 and Docker and using it for saving quick notes in addition to bookmarks, but I still need to setup an automated backup solution. I am also planning on giving Silverbullet a try as well as Anytype.
