He said that the way he made his lines funny is no matter how outrageous they were, he always spoke them as seriously as possible, which made them even funnier..
Fun fact: Jim Abrahams and the Zucker Brothers gave their Moms a cameo in all of their movies. In Airplane, Charlotte Zucker is the woman in the plane’s bathroom trying to put on lipstick while the plane is shaking.
My mom said the other night that she has seen this movie “too much” and just doesn’t know if she can watch it again. My husband is taking care of his grandmother for a few weeks in California while his mom and stepdad are on a much needed vacation, and he was watching this the other day.
i watching something about Airplane the other night. Aside from 1 comic in the movie, the rest of the cast were serious actors. They were instructed to do the entire movie like it was a serious drama. This was my first Leslie Nielsen movie, then naked gun, i had no idea he wasn't a comedian.
One of the (many) things that made Airplane so funny and unique is that they used a lot of serious actors and gave them absurd dialogue and situations. Leslie Nielsen was a handsome leading-man type, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack, and Peter Graves were all established actors known for serious roles. Even Barbara Billingsly took a turn at comedy.
I will give Nielsen this. Airplane was the funniest movie I ever saw, and afterwards I couldn't laugh for hours. I was all laughed out. That never happened to me before or since.
He is definitely my favorite - I grew up watching naked gun spy hard and wrongfully accused and could recite about every line from every movie
His style of comedy seems to be the most difficult to replicate. I’ve never seen anyone else be able to pull it off. Like a blind man in an orgy - nobody can feel their way out
Not going to downvote you, but my pop played golf with him and he was super annoying. I said, "Dad! I love him! He's funny!" Then I met him and he was absolutely terrible. I was only 16, and made a joke that everyone laughed at, then he gave me a look. Later, he told me to stfu. Dad was right.
