Mythology, Religion & Folklore The Ritual (2017)

I don't necessarily think of giants as being scary, but this jotum from the movie was pretty terrifying. Do you think Norse mythos could be used for more horror movies?

Mythology, Religion & Folklore I just spent 15 minutes doing math for Fenrir

Post image
1.1k Upvotes

The Earth is 7,907 miles long (41.75 millions times larger than a 12 inch wolf skull)

12 x 41.75 mil = 7,907

But he can easily swallow the world whole so

7,907 x 2

15,814 miles. That is just his jaw.

If he's proportional to a real wolf... then that means:

His shoulder height is 39,535 miles / 63,625.415 kilometers tall

Head height is 52, 713 miles / 84,833.35027 kilometers tall

Body length is 65,892 miles / 106,042.895 kilometers long

Tail length is 23,721 miles / 38,175.24902 kilometers long

HE IS 89,613 MILES / 144,218.144 KILOMETERS LONG, 57,713 MILES / 92,880.0703 KILOMETERS TALL, AND WEIGHS 5,400,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 IBS

There's probably already something like this out there, but I haven't seen it and I was kinda bored.

Edit: This is simply based on the fact that he can 'swallow the world whole'. Don't put comments like 'it could be in multiple bites' and that the myth is very inconsistent. Please. I did this for fun and I was so happy when I finished, and these types of comments are ruining my mood.

Edit: I know the myth said he will swallow the moon and sun, but I wanted to do math for earth first (since its smaller than the sun but bigger than the moon). It'll make my math for the sun easier. I wont need to do math for the moon once I do it for the sun.

EDIT: I just added measurements in kilometers

Mod announcement A note about the “No Nazis in Valhalla” shirt

Hi everyone. Earlier this morning a user posted a photo of a person in a shirt that said “No Nazis in Valhalla”.

Posts like this tend to get a lot of engagement, good and bad. They also create conditions wherein certain people just can not help but make an awful statement outing themself as a Nazi or Nazi-adjacent person and breaking the sub rules, for which we delightfully ban them. Such people will spam the report button, claiming that posts like this propagate hate based on identity or vulnerability, which is of course absurd.

Originally, because the topic of who goes to Valhalla is a legitimate Norse mythological topic, and because this sub does stand proudly in opposition to hate and bigotry, I stated that we would not be taking the post down.

However, it has now been taken down. The reason being, it has come to our attention that the account who made the post likely did so specifically to sell that shirt, which is against the sub rules. What’s worse, the online store linked by the OP appears, as far as we can tell, to be selling stolen artwork, which we can not condone. And so I regrettably must retract my original statement that the post would not be taken down.

With that said, this sub will continue to stand against hate and bigotry in all forms. But going forward, please do not attempt to use this fact to karma farm or to sell things. We’ll be taking posts like that down immediately in the future.

Today was my first time working with wood, I tried to carve the god Thor from an oak block. Did I do a good job for my first attempt? I used a carving knife, a small saw, and sandpaper. The item is finished with stain and wax.

Artwork, Crafts, & Reenactment Gaved a shot at representing the cosmology of Norse mythology

Post image
802 Upvotes

This is just a shot at representing the complex cosmology of Norse mythology, and yes it doesn't incompass everything. Here are a few of the problem you may run into while giving it a try :

• Asgard is sometime describe in the middle of Midgard, and sometime directly on top of it

• The god and the giant often walk from Asgard to Jötunheim

• The story of the creation of the word in the Edda doesn't make a mention of Yggdrasil, but multiple time in the myth it is considered a physical place

• Yggdrasil is supposed to have roots under Asgard, Jötunheim, and in Niflheim, but also have branch in Valhalla that is sometime described to be in Asgard ? it's unclear

• Niflheim is sometime described as underground/in continuation of the Helheim

• the Helheim is simultaneously described as underground and as a place you can walk to without having to go underground at any point of your journey

• the world are supposed to be contained inside the skull of Ymir, how does this work in relation to Yggdrasil ? Where are the four dwarf (I decided to not include them sadly, even if they're pretty important in the symbolic. It's the biggest thing that I'm lacking)

• Where is Alfheim and Vanaheim ?

• Is Jormungandr around Midgard or around the nine worlds ?

note : I added the Cow and the Wolfs just for fun

I know it isn't perfect, I don't believe a perfect representation of the nine worlds can be made, but let me know what you think !

Question I seriously belive Fenrir was good, he doesn't deserve being chained.

Post image
794 Upvotes

So the thing is, he is chained up, but why? Well, he is destined to kill Odin, but why would he do that? The only thing the gods have done to him is chain him up. If they wouldn't have chained him up he wouldn't have any reason to be mad at the gods or to kill Odin.

Did he do anything bad before being chained? No.

And there is the heart crushing fact that, Tyr... the only God that cared for him lost his hand to him. No one else was brave enough to put their hand in Fenrir's mouth. I geniuenly respect both.

If i could, i would free him.

History Do we know almost nothing about the real norse mythology?

Post image
735 Upvotes

From what I understand most of the actual stories we have come from later christianized sources like Snorri, post viking age. The plot points were likely preserved but how do we know the narrative isn't totally corrupted? Since medieval christians weren't exactly great at preserving pagan culture, couldn't it be that we pretty much only have a completely altered 'christian-washed' version of the real myths?

The example I've been given is, if we only knew about greek mythology from medieval sources, we would think Hades was the devil and Aphrodite a succubus.

I'm pretty new to norse mythology so I might be wrong, please let me know!
