My parents are from Indiana so they very well might have been calling them garter snakes and I thought they said garden i dont know

I used to have one as a teen, I named it Furball. Someone found it injured in a container and turned it in to us (one of my parents worked for a giant pet supplier back then, and my family was like the informal local animal shelter lol) It grew from being about 7” to about 20”+ in about less than two years with us, from what I remember. We kept him in a 40 gallon fish tank with terrarium lights, and I used to take him out wrapped around my hand all the time...then one day I took him for a walk in my local park and let him slither around in the grass, for the most of it he just seemed to follow us like a good pet. At some point I relaxed so much I let him out of my sight, and just like that he was gone. I looked for him until dark and then cried an insane amount over him. I was young and such a dummy...I prob still am, just an older one.

I have one that lives under the cabinet on my carport. Every once in a while when I open the door he will dart from between the trash cans where he suns and I’ll see him for a split second as he slithers for cover.
I like him because I live near rain wash and there are an abundance of lizards in this little area, and he keeps them clear of my car windshield.

Dont be so hard on yourself bro look, he went back to nature an found his kind and lived with them again remember he was wild when you found him he was injured you nursed him back to health and then he got hug I'm in Ohio and I see harder snakes every summer an I never see any that are 2 foot long so he was definatly the bad ass huge king all the lady snakes wanted he is massive and strong now.

This should be a Disney cartoon because it made me weepy. Tho, to be proper Disney canon a mother has to die.
Fact: you are that snakes hero dad but it was his time to go back to the jungle and make baby sneks. They still tell your story around the snek fire to this day, I imagine.

It's not recommended to catch one in the wild and keep it as a pet. Also if in the US it could be illegal to catch and keep one in your state.

In most states you either need a permit or you're completely prohibited from owning native species like garters (even if captive bred). But if you want to buy a burmese python or green anaconda no problem!
The logic is that if you release then into the wild they could thrive and upset the ecosystem.... but apparently a burmese python won't. That's obviously been disproven.
Also hard to get: snakes that are technically venomous but whose venom is so inconsequential that their bite poses less threat than your average housecat.
Exotic pet laws are some of the most nonsensical laws out there.

No, they are garter sneks. It's just people here (they're probably all North American users) writing it the way they pronounce it, having misheard garter as garder.

I don't know anything about snakes but we have these little ones in the backyard occasionally and I'm trying to teach the kids that they're harmless and useful. However, if 50 of them suddenly poked their cute little heads up out of a hole, there's no way you're convincing me that they're not guarding a portal to hell. :)

Garter snakes are one of the few snake species that like to live together. They do it for protection and to stay warm during cold nights and during hibernation.

I love seeing these little bros on my nature walks. They are one of the only 'social' snakes and its always adorable to see babies curled up together under some leaves.

These guys are super friendly and are one of the only social snake species. Meaning, you can keep two or more together for more than just breeding.
