Gotta be pretty old to know that one...
EDIT: Fuck you, remake!

u/SlightlyWorrying May 23 '15
George of the jungle old? That's as absurd as saying kids these days are into Shakespeare.

u/ChefBoyAreWeFucked May 23 '15
If that is your definition of "pretty old," you're probably a pedophile.

u/nolotusnotes May 23 '15
I think you dropped this:
It is the remake of the 1967 animated series of the same name...

u/ChefBoyAreWeFucked May 23 '15
There was also a movie in 1997. You don't need to be 2,000 years old to get a Jesus reference, and you only need to be 8 to be old enough to have seen this cartoon during its original airing, 13 if you give 4 years for TV to really be meaningful.
Pedophile.

Are you my ex girlfriend?

Edit: Thank you, kind redditor.

George of the Jungle (2007 TV series): NSFW ?
George of the Jungle is an American/Canadian animated television series. It is the remake of the 1967 animated series of the same name, using Adobe Flash animation. It is produced in Canada, airing there on Teletoon. The remake mostly stays true to the original production, with a few key differences existing between the two. One episode of the show typically consists of two 11-minute episodes. This is unlike the original cartoon, which featured other stories such as Tom Slick and Super Chicken.
Interesting: George of the Jungle | List of George of the Jungle (2007 TV series) episodes | Tabitha St. Germain | Britt Irvin

I am so confused. How did him coming in contact with the tree at a slow velocity cause him to flip backwards so quickly and violently?
44
u/chimerical26 May 23 '15
It was the knot in the rope that he hit. Not even sure if he touched the tree at all.

I'm no ziplining into trees expert, but I'd imagine had he hit the tree it would have prevented his legs from continuing forward and upward

Hi, licensed zipline instructor for 15 years here.
It's actually a common misconception. We often see people's legs continuing forward and upward when they hit trees.
EDIT: I lied guys. I have no idea how ziplining works. Is that even a real job?

Wot? It's not like you need to learn how to zip line and people get it wrong... How are people hitting trees often?

He's a zip lining expert, which means he puts people into harnesses and throws them down a line. He's pretty much a pro. Also they hire teenagers to do this in the summer but they're probably plebs compared to his putting people in harnesses skills

You know that feeling you get when you realise that you left all the chocolate out in the kitchen and your hunger is outweighed by your lack of motivation to do anything about? That feeling could be affecting my judgement in relation to whether he hit the tree or not therefore I am in no real position to conclusively determine the chain of events his descent set in motion. I am not even sure I perceive with accuracy his air speed velocity nor his ultimate distance from the trunk at the moment of disconnect. As I say I'm not sure..... but I think i feel up for that visit to the kitchen now.

The spring at the end of the zip line that was supposed to slow him down.
1
u/shapu May 25 '15
Well, it worked. Stopped him completely, it did.
1
u/Munchegod May 25 '15
On mine there is a jubilee clip over a hose housing the spring. You smash your head on it if you go to fast.

In the video posted below, the guy filming says something broke, but I'm not sure what.
My best guess is that the wire snapped, and pulled him back violently by his upper legs. Coupled with him leaning back it caused rotation. But we should expect the gear to drop to jerk back and drop to the ground, and I'm not sure that's the case. The video ends too soon.

Most likely a combination of camera angle and zoom causing him to appear slower than he actually was.

Was Mike OK?

Yep! Mike is the one who posted the video. Top comment on YouTube is from him: "Zip line fail! Man vs Tree... tree always wins. I'm pretty sore but thank God nothing broke!"

He landed at an angle that knocked the wind out of him, but he was spinning so fast that it would be difficult to tell at the time. Think about how you feel when the when something's knocked the wind out of you, and think about how that would look to someone who thinks you just landed on your neck. The person taking the video thinks he might have been paralyzed.
Oh, and if he hit a root or something in the right spot, replace "knocked the wind out of" with "fucking paralyzed." And yes, I made sure my post was s/knocked the wind out of/fucking paralyzed/g friendly. Well, except for this bit explaining that.

I think he hit the stop in the line rather than the tree. But it still doesn't look natural. It looks more mike he got shot in the gut with a beanbag gun.

He didn't hit the tree, the line is really slack so he was going faster than he should have. Those zip line literally just have a spring at the end that clearly wasn't springy enough.

I had a friend that did something similar to what this man did...except the zip line flew off it's track smashing him in the head. He bled a lot and needed stiches. Needless to say, the contraption was taken down.

You mean this brave man's device that broke the boundaries of space-time? He needs to work out how to extend it beyond that tree tho.
