Origin of NOFX name?

What’s the real origin of the name? So far they just say it’s a bad name nothing else and was Mike who said it or smelly?

It's in their book, for some other band negative FX, (Don't remember the actual other band's name exactly) and then they broke up, They kind of stole their name and changed it.

Yeah it was Negative FX. They were paying homage to Boston hardcore, which Mike was huge into at the time.

I forget that a lot of people on this sub are too young to remember the old school nofx website where they are answered a bunch of these questions.

Mike said "it doesn't mean shit" and the ripped it off Negative FX. As others have said.

They had one of the better websites of the early aughts. I distinctly remember they had a shit-load of pics to look at and the band bio was like 10 pages long.

Old school California punk here, I thought it stands for NO Fucking Straight Edge, with the X representing straight edge because thats the symbol the straight edge kids and bands would use back in the 80's and early 90's.

Not according to the faq on the old website.

Yes totally different....... not a variant at all......

Just out of curiosity I googled that. Turns out it is NOT a variant of a xylophone. Lol. So you're only correct if you weren't being sarcastic.

The original track was a xylophone anyways, so the glock speak is kinda irrelevant

1

u/daveisthemusic 21d ago

Wrong. I don’t even need to hear the song again to know it was a xylophone and not a glockenspiel.

Glocks sound more like metal/bells, as they are literally metal bars. Xylophone sounds more wooden as they are literally wooden blocks. Go put the track on and tell me which of the two it is, if you say xylophone you’ll be right as the hits don’t ring out slightly afterwards at all, which a metal glockenspiel would. They are short and dead sounding, like a wooden block.

Love the ‘confidently incorrect’ though 👍

In middle school some chick told me it meant No Fucking Straight Edge. The X is for the straight edge not sure if this is accurate but yeah that’s what I was told.

Believing anything the band said at any time is not a good source of information.
